Can someone explain to me the significance of using "smiley faces" in video game situations?
I absolutely can't stand any form of smiley face, whether it is in the context of a friendly conversation, or it is aimed at someone in a passive-aggressive manner when trying to be bad mannered. I've noticed Europeans tend to do this a lot more than Americans, and the Americans who do type smiles are usually doing it because they are being assholes. Most Europeans who smile tend to do it because they are genuinely happy or something, I don't know. But honestly, do you really sit and your computer with a huge fucking grin on your face and type ": )" to people? Or, if you're Russian, ")))))))))))))))"?
This is my number one pet peeve. I hate it more than people who don't "gg", or are just generally shit talkers or bad mannered. You can insult my skill, my race, or even my mother. But don't you fucking dare smile at me. It pisses me off like no other. I had to stop watching Sheth's stream. I've been a big fan of him ever since he was Chosen in Brood War, but the guy smiles when he is angry, happy, sad, or just because he wants to add some flavor to his text. I honestly doubt the guy is really smiling. Raise your hand if you ever went to a LAN for any video game. How many people were smiling while playing? Yeah, not many. Maybe the kid in the corner who just snorted coke like fifteen minutes ago, but I really don't think everyone is grinning at their monitors typing "You're really bad : )" or some dumb bullshit like that.
I talk to people casually online who use smiley faces, and it doesn't bother me. I use smiley faces too when I'm just chatting. I tend to use ";o", ";D", and "c:", and sometimes ":c". But the thing is, 98% of the time I use smiley faces, I'm talking to 12 year old girls. And do you know who uses smiley faces like no other? 12 year old girls. So when someone is using smiley faces excessively in video games, whether you're trying to be a passive aggressive fag, or just overly happy and feel the need to shower everyone with your textual satisfaction, you aren't cool. You just remind me of a kid. A female one at that.
Someone enlighten me why people do this?

cheer up man. No one is trying to insult you, people just want to be happy and get that across since you can't interpret tone over text

why do you casually chat a lot with 12 year old girls? (I'd use a wink or S smiley here but it'd feel weird)
|
Chatting with someone through text is a very impersonal way of communicating with someone. As a result, a lot of the feel gets lost. You are most likely reading this in a very dull, to the point voice, but if I were talking with you in real life, there would be all sorts of inflection being used to help convey the feel.
If you say something and then add a face, it lets the other person know the feel you are trying to convey :D
Whereas without the face, it can often feel like you are listening to a robot.
|
First of all, unless you are a 12 year old boy, why are you talking to 12 year old girls so much?
The most important function of smileys for me is to convey tone, because people tend to type in conversations like they would speak, obviously text has a lot less extra information like tone, facial expressions, whatever, emoticons are a way to close the gap to a (real) conversation a bit.
Or to annoy cynical people!

sounds like you chat with a lot of 12 year old girls ;D

Looks like someone wasn't hugged as a child

Bitches love smiley faces.

I use smiley faces when I chat with friends, or when I'm pretty darn happy!

Was wondering the same thing...
lighten up man, of course people at a LAN are serious, but when I'm just chilling at home playing ladder games I probably am smiling. If I'm not smiling, it's because there's nobody there to see my smile and so I show my smile in a way that someone else can --- with a smiley.

It adds flavor/sets a tone.
ie.
You suck.
vs
You suck .

#1 computer double post xDDDD

I use them to passive-aggressively enrage other players, clearly this is extremely effective.

Emoticons are a long-term internet fad.
When communicating only using text there are many less ways to creatively express yourself than there are when talking in person or through most other forms of communication. Smileys are one of the ways people have come up with doing it using plain text.
Yeah when people say something condescending and then put a happy face that really pisses me off sometimes lol

It doesn't put a smile on your face when someone rages when they are losing? It sure does for me. Its a pity smile, although I won't type it to risk the other from self-imploding from rage.
blog obligatory smile:

Yes, 100% this.
I don't know if this is true for everyone, but whenever I do it, it's to convey something beyond what the text says. It takes the place of body language or voice inflection, which can't be communicated online.

im fine with smiley faces EXCEPT the fucking korean ones (^^ ^____^) for some reason those get under my skin, i think it just draws a connection to those insufferable wapanese people that drain my life force every time i have to interact with them
|
Koreans over use ^_^ imo but they are just trying to be friendly
also whenever I type "lol" I'm never laughing out loud. I'm sure most of you don't really rofl when you type it
|
I use smileys when I get flamed in DotA for using maphacks (I'm not lol). So yeah basically chatting with 12 year old girls.

Chill
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Edit: seriously, a thread is not an academic thesis.

I actually agree. We should abolish this fool-hardy tradition; how long has this trend needlessly leeched off our linguistic abilities since the very conception of net? People - conveniently addicted about how one can supposedly convey expressions with few simple clicks - are abandoning their communicative abilities, not expounding one's intelligence upon actual sentence styling that helps to create the tone.
The thing really bothered me at that blog about someone raging at frequent grammatical errors was that nobody bothered to point out the abundance of smiley used by the people agreeing with him- have not many sticklers pointed out in the past that exactly such gratuitous use of these wiggly lines will eventually contribute to the decay of language? Nobody bothers making such arguments anymore, and I am seriously concerned about what abomination our average linguistic abilities as a society will be several years later......
+ Show Spoiler +:p (see what effect this smiley adds to the overall tone of this post?)

Yeah, the smiley faces do help in communication.
Lately, I've realized that I use them a LOT, and also that they make one's posts seem somewhat childish if overused, so I've stopped using them randomly most of the time. I would have added a smiley after the previous sentence, for example, and that probably would have been mostly unnecessary.

Bro, why you gotta be so serious? The tone of your post is so monotonous.

wow that's a new level in the hate scale
either you're a troll either you have a serious problem, man

wow tl has a lot of smileys. They help show emotions, hence the term emoticon!

you have to be an asian netizen to know how to overused emoticon o.O O_O :-/ (> ^.^)> <(^.^ <)

I get annoyed when people don't use smileys, i tend to spam them and use them in every single sentence
|
To be honest, this is a bit of a strange thing to be annoyed by. You HAVE been on the Internet before right? Surely you've made peace with smilies due to the fact that they're pretty much everywhere?
Good luck overcoming your hatred for the little happy people though ^_^
