HELLO.

You probably have no idea who I am, but that's to be expected! I'm pretty much just a TL lurker but sometimes post randomly in LR threads and blogs and stuff. Over the past few weeks, I've been trying to write some sort of blog where I, much like a lot of other bloggers on TL, document my goals, achievements, and progress through the Starcraft 2 Ladder. I failed. I made like 4 or 5 attempts, but each time I either go completely off-topic and write a large wall-of-text completely unrelated to what I really want to blog about, or I somehow manage to convince myself that writing a blog on TL about what I want to achieve in SC2 isn't actually gonna help me achieve it (not dissing anyone who does, I'm just saying I doubt it would work for me personally).

My initial SC2 ladder goals were simple; I had a severe case of ladder anxiety (I get massive heart palpitations if and when I do click the "Find Match" button lmao), and I also had the whole "I like Starcraft 2 but instead of playing all I do is watch streams, replays, and read the forums" syndrome. My goals were to overcome these obstacles. Now, I can proudly say I've (mostly) achieved these goals, and am finding the ladder a lot less provoking than before! Woo! I'm perfectly capable of motivating myself to achieve those goals without having to post a blog about it on TL! ... But I still kinda wanted to write a blog, just for the heck of it.

So then I came up with the idea of blogging about my journey through SC2 in general: How I got into the game, how I thought I was good at SC2 for being placed into silver and being promoted to gold after another 15 games only to find out later that it was actually because I was 4 gating every game, how I decided to make the switch to Zerg because I was angry at myself for cheesing (4 gate) to gold without even knowing it, how I managed to convince all my close friends to play SC2 with me, how we played team games together at LAN cafes, how they refused to play any form of 1v1 that involved me in it, how all of them except one quit SC2 a couple of months later, how I lost motivation to play because of that, and how I tried to blog about it to try and motivate myself to keep playing. However, I failed at that as well, 'cause I simply couldn't summarize it all into a simple a blog post and ended up (yet again) writing a wall-of-text full of whine and unrelated crap... Oh wait, I just summarized my entire SC2 journey into a single paragraph- No, a single sentence with lots of commas! Go me!

So yah, I was a little down when most of my friends decided to stop playing SC2 (mainly because SC2 is a difficult game, and most of them are very casual gamers, plus all of them were afraid of ladder as well), but hey! On the bright side, the one friend who DIDN'T quit is more than enough motivation for me to keep playing! Honestly, he was the person I'd least expect to continue playing Starcraft 2 since he doesn't look like the RTS type of guy and seemed like the type of person who'd be stuck in bronze forever (he went 0-5 in placements and was the guy who'd pick one of the same 3 heroes in every game of DotA and buy the same items every game regardless of the situation, if you're familiar with the WC3 custom map). However, through pure brute force laddering, he managed to get into the Platinum league! As Zerg! (not implying anything lol) Being the "better" gamer in general, I feel both inspired, and motivated to get better (since I too, am still in Platinum but consider myself better than him) so I've set aside the depression I got from my friends quitting, and am more motivated than ever to be a better gamer!

Oh shi- This blog post is getting longer than I expected. I better cut it short before my brain decides to tell me to delete this and proceed to make me fail yet another attempt at writing a blog. Anyways, despite feeling a little disappointed that I only have 1 friend left in SC2, I have to admit that I did have some pretty fun times with my friends playing team games at LAN centres a few months back. We always had an uneven amount of players (usually 5), so we'd balance out the teams with an AI. And since I was always deemed the "best" player of the lot, I'd always be stuck with the AI (either medium or hard difficulty, but medium mostly lol) and the worst player of the bunch who doesn't even know the name of the units of his main race. Despite all that, LOLs were had because of how stupid both my AI AND human teammates were. In fact, I even drew a picture of it some time ago!

Disclaimer: The picture is pretty amateurish (I'm 21 but it looks like something a 12 year old would come up with) but you gotta give me some credit! It's the first time I've ever done something of the sort on the computer, and also the first and only time I've ever used a tablet (which I stole from my younger sister to use for this piece) to draw something! I'm not a great artist, but I'm pretty satisfied with the final product:

Pictured above: Me (red probe) and my nooby friend (red hellion) who plays terran being completely destroyed by the other team (protoss and zerg). The medium AI got cannon rushed and obviously didn't respond, I couldn't stop the rush myself and proceeded to have my base filled with cannons as well, my terran friend who wasn't affected by the cannon rush had an army total of ONE HELLION after roughly 15 minutes of play (and he literally said what he said in real life lol), and the guy saying "SC2 is fun" originally wasn't too excited about having to play Starcraft 2 but decided that it is indeed an awesome game when he was allowed to safely mass carriers on one base.

And that's about it! I hope this wasn't too long of a blog post, but if you DID read through the entirety of it, you have my thanks and I hope you enjoyed it! I doubt I'm gonna write any further blog entries since I probably wouldn't have anything of interest to blog about, but after numerous failed attempts, I've finally posted a blog about something! Aww yeah!

I'm off to play some ladder! See ya!

That is one fast Cannon rush/push if it can keep up with Muta+Ling.

Or, that is one slow army of Muta+Ling if it can only keep up to Cannons and Carriers.

Your inability to stop the cannon rush is a sign of your newness to the game, but don't be discouraged. We all get cannon rushed from time to time and occasionally we fail to spot it and lose our base like a noob.

You should always scout your base for an early probe trying to sneak in and make a pylon. The most common type of cannon rush is the Hidden type, so be aware of it. If you find a probe and a pylon building send 3 probes to kill the pylon and one to kill the builder. If a cannon is on its way consider sending extra probes to make sure the pylon dies.

The second most common type of rush is the Low Ground cannon rush. It's where a cannon is built down below to add a barrier where your probes can't kill it. If you control its vision of the high ground by preventing probes or team overlords from coming up the cliff, you have nothing to worry about. If the probe hides it well first then it can be tough to stop. You'll need Stalkers/Cannons to prevent the cannons from spreading further.

The third type is the BOSS cannon rush where a probe walls himself behind your mineral line. If he does this you can't stop it at all, so have a probe follow any probes you see wandering around your base, even if it appears to just be scouting.
Life is not about making due with what you have; it's about finding out just how much you can achieve. Never settle for anything less than the best. - - - Read my blog!

Hah! The picture of course isn't a 100% accurate depiction of the actual game we played. In fact, I kinda mixed in 2 games into 1 picture, one where we got cannon rushed, and one where we just got straight out out-massed. Either way! It was a bunch of bronze, silver, and unranked players playing, what'd you expect? =)

how to stop a cannon rush

LOL! Thanks for the sweet advice, but I'm pretty decent at holding off cannon rushes now. That game happened ages ago, and it was the AI being cannon rushed (I didn't notice as my scouting probe went out early and missed the pylons being placed down), which transitioned into ME being cannon rushed. Regardless, really thoughtful of you to post all that advice lol
