It's been on my mind for years and I always feared that the ideals and goals of journalism are less nobler than once labeled in movies and in my notions of the early 60s to 80s (I'm pretty sure that sentence doesn't work). A common word I am hearing now is that journalists are more becoming infotainers. | ||

I like to wear those 100% polyester-type half-zip sweaters (i.e. north face etc., "therma-fit" nike), and I've found that after washing them several times, they completely lose their initial amazingly soft/smooth feeling (versus cotton clothes which don't seem to retain heat as well, yet last for much longer) | ||

Trashy journalism has its place, and can even be pretty amusing, but my favorite pieces are things like TL's final edits which show everyone a clear sense of the writer's knowledge and interest in the subjects they're trying to share with others. | ||

I sometimes feel the same way, what I dislike the most are these "Journoblogs" where faux-journalists post up trivial stories, potentially false ones, without any need to follow the "creed" of journalism or at least the basics. If called out, they just say: "it's a blog, I don't have any criterias or standards to follow". My main example is the Gawker network that really just bothers the hell out of me, most of their articles are either empty remarks or jokes about something going on in the news now (and aren't really funny) or when something does actually happen, they litter it with opinion and snide remarks. Whenever I think of journalism, I think of how a lot of people go through a lot of schooling to properly write and investigate, as a journalist is viewed and then there's the internet that completely sweeps away these "protocols" and just appreciates the rudimentary quality of the internet: Instantaneous news. The rain was so terrible that day, and yet the line to get in snaked right around the corner of the convention center.It was fun seeing a 'newbie' versus a 'veteran.' This was also my first experience seeing a player receiving the golden mouse. The crowd was really hyperactive, and it was fun seeing their cheer leaders (Guys with drums mainly.) really inciting them to get louder. The biggest PL finals for me was Samsung/Sparkeyz on Kwangahli beach in Busan. I worked for about twelve hours non-stop taking photos/making articles right there in a tent on the beach. I cut my arm and didn't even notice, ruined my sneakers, and spent the night sleeping in a love motel with two other girls (nothing like that you dirty devils!) It cost me $200 to do that pl, and I'll never forget being front and center on the press line taking photos as Samsung won. The crowd was all restrained behind us in this massive wall of cheers and whistling. Afterwards we had a big dinner with all the journos, KeSpa folks and team managers. It was surreal, but fulfilling. :D It was a pleasure to do that work for TL (and elsewhere.) I miss it, but I needed a change. | ||

TBH I spent so much time working on eSports for the first two years that I barely did any traveling at all. I really enjoyed visiting Kwangahli for the PL finals, but I spend a lot of time in Children's Gran Park in the evenings. It's really pleasant to just wander around watching the fountain show (they use a light show, music and co-ordinated water jets to put on a show every 30mins-ish.) during the warmth of the evening when not many people are around. I really recommend visiting the parks in Seoul, as well as the Royal Palace park and any more rural temples. Right now, my perfect day would consist of getting on a plane, flying to Tokyo, spending a horrific amount of money in shops like Mandarake, going to some kind of Tokusatsu live event, and then heading home the next morning. I'm planning a vacation to Japan with my Mum in the near future :D | ||

You just need to shop around, and find a place that fits you personally. | ||

Well I tend to lump Chinese in with HK, Taiwanese and other EA countries that aren't Korea or Japan in terms of music. I do like Wilbur Pan, BoBo, Kimi and some faintly hilarious 'rap' acts like Edison Chen. I really hate ballads though, so I tend to avoid a lot of the more mainstream stuff. Oh, and I like some of Jay Chou, S.H.E. and Fahrenheit's stuff. | ||

Even if the companies involved are going through legal disputes, and maybe sometimes don't have their priorities in order (aka. Money comes first.) upon a grassroots level SC2 looks like it's bringing a lot of new people out of the woodwork. | ||

In a couple of weeks i'll be attending Dreamhack Summer and i'll have a chance to try and get some shots of plenty of players but probably the most exciting to me is getting something awesome of NaDa looking good. I have a high end Nikon D3 with a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8. Whilst I've tried my hand at quite a few outdoors areas of photography, i've never really done much low-light indoors stuff and certainly never an esports event. What advice can you give me (and possibly other aspiring photographers) that will help me get that awesome shot of a progamer close-up? My D3 can in theory handle low-light like a boss so I think i'm well equipped for it, just lack of experience should be the limiting factor. Thanks in advance.. and I love a lot of your work. | ||

I don't watch tv here, so I'm not really sure how heavily it was reported, but I did see newspaper coverage, and online reports on places like The Korea Times. No one actually spoke to me about it at work though. I didn't see any active signs of panic. During the submarine sinking incident I saw a huge fabric banner showing photos of the deceased naval crew hung up over a building on my way home, but other than that it seemed to be handled in the same way it would've been elsewhere. | ||

Thank you :D I've found that the following elements really play a part in getting the shots you want; 1) Don't be afraid to pick your moment and then approach the subject of your choice to ask for some shots. Candids can be great, but a posed shot that is taken in the correct environment and doesn't look like it was just thrown together can be a nice change of pace. 2) Keep it polite, but make sure you're keeping tabs on your subject at all times in case they do something photo-worthy. Don't become distracted by 'needing to go get food' or 'what your friends want to do.' If you want the shot, you have to forget all about those kinds of distractions until you get it. 3) Find a good spot and camp in it - I once spent two hours hidden on camera behind a speaker to get shots at OGN during an All-Stars event. If you find an angle that works (and preferably gives you the opportunity to shoot multiple people at once) then put dibs upon it and remain there as long as possible. 4) Prepare your kit well in advance - just the common sense idea of making sure you bring spare batteries, check your settings etc beforehand and just before shooting. If you have a willing victim then send them to your chosen areas and do test shots. I hope that helps :D | ||

A lot of them are quite self conscious and prefer to 'stay behind the camera' so to speak so my usual quite forward approach often seems to cause them to curl up in shy/defensive shells. So far the only successful method i've arrived at is the standard teasing, poking to break the ice but i want to stab myself in the arm every time i come on to someone like we're still 11 and over at the swings at school recess... You're not missing too much with L4D/2...that game is kind of hit and miss. Some days it's good and other days there's just...something wrong with your group and the teams are horridly stacked and it's like pitting a D+ Terran vs Flash on ICCUP. Then you get annoyed and shelf it for two months. Or at least I did, haha. I imagine Dead Island is gonna be the same to an extent, however, it will be fresh and original for at least a little while! No, because it's rude.' That shut her up quickly lol. I'd never dream of being so rude about someone elses' preferences, so I don't expect people to make negative comments about mine. It's fine to say it's not your thing, but acting as though someone's hobby is inferior or wrong just because you don't understand/like it really annoys me. I've found the otaku working/attending places like Comic World and Nonno21 (a shop which sells loads of nendoroids and other Japanese figures) to be really welcoming. When myself and cgivisionary attended Nonno21's monthly flea market we got given canned coffee, more raffle tickets that I was technically supposed to have (a random teenage boy even came over to give me his lol.) and discounts on things I bought. It felt really nice, but my only regret was that I couldn't communicate more with these lovely people due to my shoddy language skills. I also always get service and discount when I go to these shops. I've had everything from free figures to free food :D It's a really nice quirk of Korean shopping culture. I personally prefer Yongsan's OGN center - it's bigger, airier, you get a much better view, and there's much more to do around it. You have the whole I-Park mall with its shops (for me the appeal is the model kit/figure store Hobby Square and the gaming floor in the same building as the OGN center.) cinema and easy access via the subway to other places. LOOX MBC Hero Center is a little more out of the way, and the small mall it's in is often like a ghost town. There's nothing much to do there even around Yeongdongpo station. The studio is much smaller, cramped, bad lighting etc. You should try to experience both, but for me Yongsan is king. | ||

This depends upon the team and their style of meeting, but at the meetings the girls usually out-number the boys by a significant margin. Certain teams have a lot more male fans (in comparison to others, but their female fan base will still be of a decent size.) - such as ACE and to an extent CJ. | ||
