People say that games like SC2 are best enjoyed with friends. Day9 advises new players to get friends that play SC2 as well.
But what if you are the only one in your region or group of friends that plays SC2? (and nobody of your friends is interested in it either) How do you keep yourself mentally strong, learn from your mistakes and still keep a positive attitude?
The reason why I'm asking this, is that I'm not a solo-player, at all. I feel much more comfortable in playing with 1 or 2 other people. It is why I almost never finish single player campaigns of any RTS, because I feel much more pleasant with people around me.
You could answer: "The TL Practice Partner thread". While correct in essence, if you look closely, you'll see that >90% of all posts there are people that are only interested in 1v1 practice matches. The amount of people that are willing to do 2v2 with a 'non-friend' is very small. And yet, that is something that people like me are bound to.
I'm wondering if anyone has advice for me in terms of 1v1 mentality. Or is experiencing similar things as I am.

I don't have any advice but I am in the same boat as you. All of my friends either don't have SC2 or just would rather play something else. I have used to have problems motivating myself to play 1v1 but I just forced myself to hit that join game button and go into each match looking to use solid mechanics and improve.

I grew up ostracized in a small village because I didn't really speak the local language or have anything much in common with the local kids around me. Fortunately I was able to find some friends to play my favorite game with (SC : BW) but within a year of deciding to get natoional #1 I had already surpassed them far and beyond.
Who do you play with, when IRL firends can't help?
Well for starters join a team or clan. I joined [ZzoA] because all the top Swiss players were there, and I only have find memories of that time. The better players will train you, without stealing your ladder points, and you can consistently practice (2v2) with the same person.
Another way is to join the "Teamliquid" channel, or maybe a "2v2" channel and just ask for a buddy, You are NOT forever alone!
Most important once you've found a buddy, talk to them. No not chat, find a teamspeak server where you guys can both connect (without tons of other people crashing in) so you guys can talk with a headset. Skype works too but if you're iffy on privacy it's not so great. When you're talking with someone you can have much better coordination of your strategies and thoughts ("FUCK help me!") and it's generaly easier to discuss the game (e.g. post-game replay analysis). In these ways you won't feel loneley

I'm sure there's lots of SC2 players in UK willing to buddy up.

I was experiencing something kinda similar in my early days in BW. All my friends didn't play or play just very casually (they barely beat the AI) and I wanted a practice partner/someone to talk and try strategies with. I wasn't a member of Teamliquid back then so all I could do was to try things out on Iccup. It didn't feel too good to try new things out on the ladder but I just had to do it. Maybe that's what you need to think as well when you are going to play 1v1? This may sound kinda depressing but you will get used to being alone after a few games/days. I don't have many friends in SC2 either

I prefer the solo SC2 experience actually.
In the past when I played BW I really got into the whole clan/team/social experience, and I gained very little from it. I laddered way less, played only friendlies, and chatted for hours. In the end I keep in contact with nobody from BW. If I took that time socializing online and put it into just straight playing it would have made me such a better player. Getting into the social game of SC imo took away from my social life as well as I had no motivations to pursue a real social life because my online one was already quite busy. Keeping SC and my social life separate has been really good since I started sc2, it has allowed me to have fun and play lots of ladder games without sacrificing the main aspects of my life (such as school).
Solo-ing SC I find really fits nicely for me. Not only does it force me to ladder a lot, but the mentality is perfect for 1v1. 1v1 is a very solitary experience and playing solo has really given me a lot more confidence as a player.
However, having a couple people on your flist to ask questions/chat for a minute or two is okay for me. It's just when you start to chat more than play does it become a problem. Also, if somebody were to offer me sponsorships by joining a team, I wouldn't give up that offer. However, I will still focus on the solo experience of SC because that's what will really get you to improve.
