Socrates 469 BC–399 BC
Socrates is perhaps the most famous martyr, he was charged with corrupting the minds of the young of Athens and for not believing in the gods of state. When asked to propose a punishment for himself he mocked the trial by suggesting that he be paid a wage and given free dinners for the remainder of his life as a payment for his services. The trial would have none of this and sentenced him to drink a poisonous potion.
When offered a free escape by his students, Socrates refused, making him a martyr.

Villainn April 2011 - May 2011
Sometimes you just can't let things go unsaid, Villainn felt this was one such time when Idra was banned by Chill recently. Villainn goes on to explain the oppression he feels, he even compares it to that of the North Koreans. To top it off, he like so many others, taunts the authorities by saying his punishment will only prove that the oppression he feels is real. A true martyr.

From my great and elaborate search into the martyrs throughout history, I have come to the conclusion that should you wish to martyr yourself, make sure it is for a good cause. Good causes are somewhat hard to define and vague, but make sure it is something that you hold very dearly, for instance freedom of speech and thought like Socrates and Cerecyte, for freedom of belief and religion like St. Stephen, for the fight against oppression and unjust treatment like Villainn or simply because zerg is overpowered like englocked.
Edit: sorry if any of the TL posters mentioned are offended.
