Wikipedia defines a martyr as "somebody who suffers persecution and death for refusing to renounce a belief or cause, usually religious.". Many people have been proclaimed martyrs throughout history, this is something that has caught my interest as of late; who were these martyrs?

Nathan Hale June 6, 1755 – September 22, 1776
An intellectual and a teacher turned captain for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, Hale volunteered to go behind enemy lines to spy on British troop movements. He ultimately got captured by the british and was sentenced to hanging.

Before he was executed he uttered these words:"I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country."

Saint Stephen
St. Stephen was stoned to death in year 34 A.D for blasphemy against Moses and God and for speaking against the Temple and the law.

He was proven guilty and sentenced to stoning. His final words were:"Which one of the Prophets did your fathers not persecute, and they killed the ones who prophesied the coming of the Just One, of whom now, too, you have become betrayers and murderers."

Socrates 469 BC–399 BC
Socrates is perhaps the most famous martyr, he was charged with corrupting the minds of the young of Athens and for not believing in the gods of state. When asked to propose a punishment for himself he mocked the trial by suggesting that he be paid a wage and given free dinners for the remainder of his life as a payment for his services. The trial would have none of this and sentenced him to drink a poisonous potion.

When offered a free escape by his students, Socrates refused, making him a martyr.

englocked December 2010 -
Englocked, having great insight into the workings of professional level Terran vs. Zerg play, takes his stand against the powers that be to get the word out.

angerpowered August 2010 -
As an outspoken member of the community, angerpowered felt that he simply had to get his opinion across about female gamers in the starcraft community. While this might not be a crime, he taunts his readers by openly wondering if he deserves punishment.

Villainn April 2011 - May 2011
Sometimes you just can't let things go unsaid, Villainn felt this was one such time when Idra was banned by Chill recently. Villainn goes on to explain the oppression he feels, he even compares it to that of the North Koreans. To top it off, he like so many others, taunts the authorities by saying his punishment will only prove that the oppression he feels is real. A true martyr.

Cerecyte July 2010 - October 2010
Cerecyte is a hero among men, he martyrs himself while defending others who wish to speak their mind. If only there were more like him.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=158183&currentpage=2#23

From my great and elaborate search into the martyrs throughout history, I have come to the conclusion that should you wish to martyr yourself, make sure it is for a good cause. Good causes are somewhat hard to define and vague, but make sure it is something that you hold very dearly, for instance freedom of speech and thought like Socrates and Cerecyte, for freedom of belief and religion like St. Stephen, for the fight against oppression and unjust treatment like Villainn or simply because zerg is overpowered like englocked.

Edit: sorry if any of the TL posters mentioned are offended.

TL fake martyrs and socrates in the same op about martyrs, brilliant! :D Angerpowered is right though women have a harder time committing all their time to one thing. They are the the quiz show winners while we men are the phd holders. One thing isn't better than the other it's just that in most cases women do tend to act that way and men in the other way.

And as for the giving women more attention for playing is just furthering sexism we should all be treated equal a man playing sc is just as exciting to me.

Nevertheless fun post!

This thread is a great example of how you can know a joke is coming and still have it be hilarious.

They are forcing the admin/moderators hand by typing something really stupid and then adding how they willl probably get banned for it so they can get other people fired up over admin/moderator power abuse.

Or they just know it is something they shouldn't have posted and add the "I will probably be banned" so their ban seems funnier.

The best is when they add it and they wouldn't have got banned in the first place except for the fact they added the request to be banned for it.

Oh and one more thing: some explanation about why martyring always results in a ban. If a user martyrs in an otherwise good post, he is insulting the mod staff and confusing other posters by suggesting he will get an unwarranted ban. If a user martyrs in an otherwise bad post, he is indicating that he knew his post was terrible and decided to put it up anyway. That's just making work for the mods.

I somehow didn't see the joke coming at all, so when I scrolled to Socrates I got all proud of myself for recognising Socrates (I am a man of low standards, you see).

I had one of those moments where you see something, think about it for a second, then just feel stupid while a wide smile slowly spreads across your face.

It's quite funny to read often both well-informed and interesting posts to have their posters get banned for a simple sentence. It's a cherry on top indeed!

If they don't know martyring results in a ban they aren't well-informed, are they?

people in this thread absolutely infuriate me, the terran imbalance bullshit is seriously to a point where i cant believe it. im not saying anything regarding balance of the game, but for fuck sake just stop fucking whining, maybe if P and Z players learned how to play the fucking game instead of spending their entire fucking day writing garbage on teamliquid they would get somewhere. lets look at a few very basic facts that require absolutely no data to be proven

#1 the first game released is from the terran campaign
#2 every fucking post in every god damn starcraft 2 forum says something about OMFG TERRAN IMBALANCED WAT 2 do OMNFG.

these 2 factors alone are going to encourage a ton more people playing terran. more people playing a race is going to lead to a greater development in strategies, leading to a more developed race

lets look at some very basic statistics for all of the illiterate 12 year old retards who dont understand how to interpret anything that doesnt tell them UR A GOOD PLAYER U JUST LOST CUS THE GAME IS IMBALANCED

number of players at a given level of play does not correlate with balance. AT ALL. lets say fayth made a post in sc2 strategy saying he would give 1000$ to every player who earned 1500 rating as zerg. boy these graphs would look alot different wouldnt they. does that mean that zerg is all of a sudden overpowered and stronger then terran? no.

the dumbest thing by far in this thread is the 1600 and 1500 rating level graph, by far. anyone whos done anything in statistics (or has half a brain) knows that a sample size of 19 (YES THERE ARE 19 PLAYERS ABOVE 1500) is not an adequate sample size to judge something as complex as game balance. IM A MORON, WHY IS THIS PETZERGLING? each 1 person on the graph represents over 5% of the total population. lets say a T player with 1501 rating plays a Z player with 1499 rating and the Z player wins (LOL CANT HAPPEN TERRAN OP) this brings an adjustment to our graph of over 10% relative data. considering people at this level play upwards of 10 games a day. proof that this sample size is retarded? here i just re calculated the numbers courtesy of sc2ranks.com and put them on a graph

OMFG PROTOSS UPSWING NOW PROTOSS IS IMBALANCED.

no the race of players in the top 1500 fluctuates this much on a daily(hourly?) basis

k im done see you idiots in disneyland

Reason: There hasn't been a martyr so right since Jesus Christ.

Do not attempt to circumvent this ban by making a new account, or your ban duration will be increased.

because people say things so incredibly stupid that you believe being banned is worth the forum hearing how incredibly stupid their opinion is?

Oh so true, was tiresome to search through the automated ban-list and then manually find the posts though, but I could probably have found much better ones.

But yeah, that was one excellent martyr right there :D

I think englocked was my favorite, just because it's so simple and stupid. :D

And yeah, like others have said, it's a passive aggressive way to "win" an argument without actually trying. If we're partial about it, then the people who get banned (who will likely be the ones with shitty posts) get to claim to be right for having part of their post come true. Instead, we just ignore the whole issue by banning/warning everyone for it.
