After spending hundreds of hours on both Fallout 3 & Fallout: New Vegas last year. I enjoyed everything about these games from the game play to the storyline. I decided to install Fallout 1 for the PC and give it a run. I finished the semester last week and realized that with a slim chance of getting a summer job, playing video games & reading novels is going to be my summer vacation. I’ll also be spending time with my girlfriend and helping around the house doing chores.

So I installed it. Patched it with both the official 1.1 , unofficial 1.2 & 1.3 patches. I even installed the widescreen patch/mod and I have to say it's all very smooth. Big thank you to the No Mutants Allowed Community for putting those files out there.

I booted up the game and decided to use the Max Stone character since I thought it would make my run easier. This was a big mistake. Not having almost any experience with turn based Role Playing Games or R.P.G’s in general; I quickly realized I was over my head. I’ve mostly played platformers/First Person Shooters/R.T.S games my whole life.

After beginning my game, heading over to Vault 15 and realizing I needed a rope; I bump into a place named Shady Sands, which I remember from New Vegas, being the birth place of the New California Republic. I kept dying trying to do the mission where I'm supposed to get rid of their giant radscorpion problem. I guess having 10 strength and unarmed focused traits isn't enough. I kept dying and having to reload my save game file, which I have to say is the most annoying part of Fallout 1. The game is difficult and has no mercy, so one has to save incredibly frequently. So F6 becomes your best friend in this game.

I decided to start the game over after an hour to create a new character. I found a decent amount of forum topics regarding it on the web. My new character Mike is as follows.

Attributes
Strength: 6
Perception: 6
Endurance: 4
Charisma: 4
Intelligence: 10
Agility: 10
Luck: 7

Traits
Gifted
Fast Shot

Skills
Small Guns
Doctor
Lockpick

So far I've been having a good time, although it's still frustrating as hell! The story is great, but I feel so overwhelmed.

I don't know whether I should continue playing Fallout or simply watch a Let's Play of it on Youtube. I know this is a master piece of a game, but with such high difficulty and outdated graphics, I’m starting to feel like I’m forcing myself to play and I’m not enjoying it as much.

Well, that pretty much wraps my situation. So do any of you guys have advice? Without giving too much away, which towns/locations should I go first in order to make my time limit and make the game more enjoyable?

Edit: To clarify the only Role Playing Game I ever finished was Paper Mario. I enjoyed it heavily!

If you're having THAT much trouble, consider using a walkthrough.

When i played fallout 1 i originally started with that kind of character, guns/med/lockpick but then i found it kinda slow going so i switched to a melee weap/unarmed char. Turned out i could finish the game with him.

And yes the game is quite hard if you're not used to old school rpgs. RPGs nowadays tend to be quite easy to play (thanks to larger audience, increase sales blah blah blah). In my opinion fallout is a classic game and once you can get the hang of it, its well worth playing.

Unfortunately its been something like 3+ years since i last played fallout 1 so i can't really help with where to start.

fallout is the kind of game you feel really good about finishing. i'd recommend keep on trying, also try to focus on the role playing element. Feel good about improving your character, dont neccesarily try and do everything 100% ideally. Role play!

I have no idea how many times I have beat this and fallout 2 but I'm sure its in the triple digits. Pay close attention to the dialogue, and one hint* Plasma Rifle.

I disagree with Xsolid. Older games like Fallout 1 require an investment to reap the true benefits. Fallout is a game where you have to commit to playing even if it feels like you're being fed broccoli at first. After a while, the trepidation and impatience you've learned from newer, less fulfilling games will melt away, and you'll get a an immersive experience that new games just can't replicate.

I'll give you some advice, though. Put a ton of points into small guns, and start investing in energy weapons little by little. The small guns points will help you for 80 percent of the game, the energy weapon investment will help you with the last 20 percent. Half of the categories are really meaningless. Focus most of your energy on those two.

Oh, and if you see a guy named Ian, have a little chat with him.
