I'll be up front, I'm bad at StarCraft 2.
Man, it's good to get that off my chest. I'm not just bad, I stink something terrible. I don't put in the time, I don't even rage when I lose, I'm just not that invested. I lose and just stare at the screen and go,
Huh, I can't believe he just walked zealots into my base off two gate. That's super embarrassing. Oh well, better luck next time.
At no point will it enter my mind that I should have done something about it. I should have scouted, or kept him off my ramp, or force fielded or... well, anything.
So I lucked my way up to Gold. I can't even say I cheesed, because there'd be a vague pride in that. I played until I started my masters (in late September) and then had to stop. I haven't played a single game since. Play games? Are you insane? I'd be demoted. No sir, I'll stay in Gold thank you very much.
Today, I sat down and spent a while letting my SC2 update, setting up my mouse all neat and tidy, tweaking its acceleration (because under Mac OS it's sloppy unless you fiddle with it) and got everything going just right. Then I clicked to join a game and it just said it had to download 77 items. The ETA was something insane like four hours.
I got talking to a friend I hadn't played with in a while and he congratulated me for swallowing all my pride and I said, "Worst case scenario, I'll be demoted to where I belong and I'll be playing people the same level as me."
When I came back from making the tea and chatting to my sister, my display was showing a shattered nexus. Apparently, I'd been defeated in my absence.
"Fuck," I thought, "What if that was a match I could have won? I don't even know what race he was. This is some bullshit."
I was full of the kind of confidence you can only have when there's no way I could be proved wrong. So I clicked to accept the defeat, and as soon as I'm brought to the score screen, I'm presented with this...
In case anyone doesn't believe this, I'll happily upload the replay or whatever. I'm just a bit confused. I haven't played in months, I know I lost my last few games (because I didn't belong in Gold at all) and now... here I am.
I literally did not click once during that game.

Congrats on the promotion. Your MMR has stabilized. Now go forth and crush more nerds.

They reset the ladder several days ago. It doesn't seem to have mattered much, though. You only play one placement match. It put me back pretty much exactly where i was before the reset in all my leagues, not just 1v1.
I don't really understand what happened with it, or even why it really matters. Your MMR stays the same, so you won't really end up playing anyone different, and I guess for the time being your movement up and down will be a lot more volatile since the bonus pool got reset, and many people have yet to sit down and get games in.

I look forward to nothing more than wasting the months I'm meant to be writing my thesis letting you drag me, kicking and screaming, through more 2v2 matches.

You probably aren't as bad as you think you are. One thing people do more often than not is overestimate the skill level of various leagues. A lot of people are in gold but have the mentality that they think they are a bronze player. Believe me, bronze is bad, so is silver, so is gold. I've always been in gold and some of the replays I have are hilariously bad.
Just today I played a zerg for my season 2 placement, I was hovering at over 500 minerals before the four minute mark, I had no units, I failed to scout a spire because my observer was 1 inch too far. And i got rolled over with mutalisks that I saw coming as they left his base. My zerg opponent just built zerglings and had nothing but that until his mutas popped. He Wasn't paying attention when my army of zealots that don't shoot up rolled into his natural and decimated some zerglings, then he realized and surrounded my few stalkers as I was stopping my zealots from attacking for some reason. Then when I could of taken the match I ran away like a coward. I had 30+ probes on one base with no plans to expand. It was terrible! But my opponent wasn't much better.
And that was a gold level game, bronze games are even worse. Play a few more games and see what goes on, if you are platinum you are platinum, you won't stay there for long if you really don't play at that level. Don't get the mentality that you feel you are sub platinum, if you don't change then yes, you are platinum, and you are around the same skill level as other platinums.
I see this a lot with people in the Master's league saying "I don't feel like i'm in masters, I am a terrible player" To a lot of people terrible means "I am not a pro" which is not true, if you are in Master's you are good, period. not the best, but far from terrible.

I was in gold, 1300 points 1v1 last season. After I won my placement match they put me in silver Last time I ever 4-gate again.

This is one of the most down to earth and genuinely heartening posts I've read in an age
Thanks Phant, I'll feel a little more comfortable wading into platinum now.
