I'm not trying to be a Pro or anything. I just want to incorporate competitive SC2 into my life as many people here do, to be a part of the community and to grow my love for SC2 as an e-sport.
In the future, I'd love to play some LANs and maybe smaller tournaments, just for fun, but the focus really is on being more involved with the community and the e-sport, in general - just like how some people play in community soccer leagues in parks. It's just to have fun, be involved in a community of people with the same interest/hobby, mimic the Pros you watch on TV, and have more educated opinions on the sport.
In any case, I started on Monday playing games against the AI in single-player mode. I'm focusing on "Pylons and Probes" per the Day[9] daily. Even though I have experience with playing StarCraft, Brood War, SC2, and many other RTSs, this is the first time I'm trying to concentrate on having good macro and working up my skill to play competitively.
Let me tell you, focusing on "pylons and probes" it is very disorienting for me. My entire mindset is different from how I casually played before.
In any case, I'm getting better already. I'm beating the computer on Hard now, so I'll be bumping it up to Very Hard by next week. Once I can consistently beat the computer on Very Hard by just following my macro, I'll start experimenting with builds. At this point, I don't even think about builds - just getting lots of units.
I wish I could have gone through this process a year ago, when SC2 was in beta, but it just wasn't the right time in my life. I work full-time, am married, and have other social commitments. I actually had a beta key last spring, but I couldn't commit to the time required for me to take competitive play seriously. Therefore, I never played one game...
However, now is the time! I just moved (for a new job) so that I live closer to my work (used to have an 1.5 hour commute each way and now have a 5 minute commute). Also, I got married last year, and I can tell you that planning a wedding takes a lot of time and energy.
In any case, I still can't play more than an hour or two each night, depending on the night, but it should be enough to improve and have fun. :D :D :D
