The final verdict is that Rift is balls.
In other news, has anyone heard of, or tried GeoCaching? You can look up the GPS co-ordinates for treasures around your town, on like hiking trails and shit, and go treasure hunting. I have yet to find any treasure myself but I'm curious to know if anyone else has tried this with any success. Has anything horrendous ever happened to treasure hunters? Acid mines or bears traps or anything?

mind elaborating? was thinking of trying it

(@rift) ^^ haha that's awesome.
I thought Rift was pretty good for an MMO, but I didn't end up buying at because the genre as a whole doesn't really appeal to me.

I enjoyed Rift for the beginning just cause it was different, but the aggro started pissing me off. There was no where safe, even the roads were dangerous.

My father used to be really into geocaching. He even put some of his own little trinkets out for others to find. He really enjoyed it!

A few things spring to mind.
First and foremost, I want to say that I'm saying this from a PvPer point of view. I don't mind PvE, I've raided before as well, but I prefer PvP for the fact that it's a lot more dynamic than scripted encounters.
Rift PvP is essentially the same as WoW PvP. Rift has Warfronts (Battlegrounds) and contested zones. My gripe with this style of PvP was outlined in my first blog.
Rift character creation *is* pretty cool. When you create a character, you choose from 4 main classes: Warrior, Cleric, Mage, and Rogue. Each main class has 8 "Souls" (Talent Trees), of which you can choose 3 to create "your" class. This is an interesting approach to trying to diversify roles, but creates a really hard game to balance.
Combined with the fact that this isn't really a world I care about, I had a hard time immersing myself in it, and I just was generally uninterested in playing in it. It's not like WoW, where there was a world and a series of events that I was involved in beforehand.
Here's something that just pissed me off. I was level 23, running through a newbie zone, level 13-15 or something. I was mounted. I got yanked off my mount by a mob. The mob and his 3 friends proceed to destroy me, because you get a debuff when you try to flee combat? Stupid.

Ah, thanks for the reply
what is PvE like though? or is it like FF14 where endgame content is lacking? i don't mind pvp much but i prefer spending most of my time playing mmo's with the pve aspect. I guess since the game is so new more stuff for this will be patched in but how is it atm?

PvE at present is fairly generic. Quests and Instances. The concept of Rifts opening up any time in any place is interesting. They also announced that on March 30th, there will be a massive assault via many huge rifts opening at the same time across the world.
Aside from that, nothing groundbreaking..

Tbh, Rift is a lot like wow in terms of pvp--but pve is what separates them. Rifts are the point of Rift if you get what im saying. And I haven't done end game rifts yet, but i would think that there will be x-faction fighting close to rifts and generally screwing with groups. If there's one gripe I have, it's immersability like Mr. Benjamin said.

They reduced the aggro radius 2 patches ago, since then I have been able to get around the world with a level 8 character mostly unharmed. Aggro radius at higher levels isn't as low as wow but you can usually ride through a low level mob area without aggroing anything if you are good at navigating.

You get debuffed if you get hit when you are riding to make it harder to just ride past things. Also a level 23 dies pretty quickly from 4 level 15 mobs, you just have ~50% more health than a level 15, the debuff you get from riding would just be 10-20% more damage so it was most likely you who miscalculated the situation, you should have killed them instead. And no, it is not stupid that you can die to mobs who are slightly lower level, it is the same thing as a few level 20's being able to kill a level 50.

Rift is exactly WoW but with constantly generated world events that are attacking your quest hubs and much more customization for your character, you can also attack the opposite factions quest hubs to gain pvp currency. The rest is world of warcraft, a bit worse obviously since they haven't had 6 years adding new stuff and making things better but it is ok. You can also talk with the other faction, no language barrier like wow.

I only went geocaching once, and the "treasure" was some dog's feces -_- bad experience

haha my thoughts exactly. They didnt have flight paths and even in the starting zone as a lvl45 i kept gettin aggro and dismounted by lvl 7 mobs orso. i played it a lot at the start, but stopped playing it last week. Its a bit to boring.

I had a chemistry teacher that went geocacheing. He seemed to love it. Just remember to have snake bite proof boots. A lot of the caches are in the woods and stuff.

Rift is annoying the hell out of me with their mass advertisement.
Also, they use "We're not in Azeroth anymore..."
I don't like games that take shots at other games in their advertisements.

I'm playing the game and I enjoy it quite a bit. Max level now, been doing some expert dungeons and they are quite challenging. PvP is good too, especially once the balance patch 1.1 hits in a few weeks time

I only played the beginning for about half an hour, but I liked how much customization they allowed you from the very start with the "souls" system. Too bad that it gets worse as it goes on, I was pretty intrigued by the start, even though the quests were pretty generic.
