How do I enjoy sc2?

I'm someone who came to sc2 from a different game, LoL/DoTa/HoN, and I was decent at the game but never really met the right people to get competitive. When I learned about sc2 I started at TL.net, not playing casually but looking at the game from a competitive perspective. Don't get me wrong I thought and still do think the game is awesome but I don't have fun while I'm playing, sure I have that moment of pure satisfaction when I win but it's not the same as truly enjoying playing. I don't know if it's because I just don't like playing sc2 because I had fun when I first started but the more and more I started to learn about the game and how complex it is I started to view it as a puzzle, something to be solved, and not necessarily something to be enjoyed. I really do love sc2 but playing it just wasn't fun for me anymore. I hope that someone out there has the right thing to say to me because I really want to play but every time I get inspired I get discouraged again so quickly. I need a change of perspective.

It all really depends on why you are playing in the first place. If you are playing because you want to get to the professional level and make a living off of Stracraft 2 and you really want to get to that level there is several things you can do.

First off, you can take a short day or so break from playing seriously (ladder games, tournaments, stressful environments, etc.) and play custom games with friends or FFA games. Try playing some custom games on some of those wonky custom maps even.

Secondly, you can try changing your race temporarily to see if the new scenery gets your interest and excitement back into playing. It's hard for someone that plays random to ever get bored of repition.

Also you can always try watching some of the pro games and see if their extremely high level of play gets your brainstorming or excited to play as well. I know a lot of inspiration for me to play has come from watching top level games casted by HD or analyzed by people like Day9.

But if all else fails, try to find an outside motivation to fuel you. Play for a lost family member, friendm etc. Play for what and those you care about, even if your outside influences are completely unrelated to Starcraft 2.

If you don't enjoy it, don't try and force yourself to do so, sit back, watch others do it for you(so to speak) and enjoy. Something I have been doing aswell for both Brood War and Starcraft 2.

I dunno, see if you enjoy team games with your friends. It's totally possible that you just don't like to play the game and that's 100% fine. I don't have fun playing moba games, I therefore don't play them, and my life is perfectly fine

All I do these days is watch "pro" streams. I don't want to play sc2 for the money, for some of you winning 5 grand at an MLG might seem like a lot but it's nothing to me. I play games because I'm a competitive person and I want to be the best at something. At first only watching streams was enough but it's not anymore.

wait isn't that your motivation for gaming then?

you said you like the competitiveness of sc2, but then you complained about it being like a puzzle. i just want you to clarify what sort of competition it is that you enjoy doing if not something like this: a challenge.

Who said anything about the MLG specifically? Plus GSL had an $80,000 1st place finish last season? Unless you are Bill Gates or Oprah that isn't too shabby to make off of 1 tournament.

If you don't like playing it, there's really no reason to continue. What do you gain by continuing? Nothing. You aren't trying to be pro (pretty smart decision at that), and you're going to waste your time watching huge balls 1a into each either.

Ehhh you won't be "rich" and the only people who will know you are other gamers. Plus, you're going to need several hours a day of playing to get anywhere near pro level. Just start playing, see if you like, and get to diamond or whatever before you start thinking about going pro.
No dough, no go. And no mercy.

Seriously? So you want Starcraft 2 to be your source of income, but you don't enjoy playing it?

Why don't you do something like find a stable normal job or go to school, you won't enjoy those either but you'll make a hell of a lot more money doing it.

i don't understand where these people thinking sc2 is easy money is coming from... if you wanna make money get a job, its far easier, far safer, and in all probability you will make substantially more money than in sc2. Unless you are an already established player who can make substantial money coaching and/or streaming, I'm pretty sure that you would make just as much money if not more at mcdonalds or something.

I'm not saying I wouldn't become a pro at sc2, money just wouldn't be my motivation. I tend to agree with you about the watching huge balls 1a into each other though, in TvP for example in a typical game if your the protoss your opening build is meant to stop the stim timing push while getting an expo and then in the midgame you get your collosus and attack the terran at which point the game usually ends and if it doesn't you get a third and make phoenix and then attack again, or get attcked depending on the state of the game. It just seems like there is so little room for what day9 would call "tactics", which in my opinion make the game fun, not seeing who has the better build/strategy.

edit:

execution of the build is important and sure micro is fun but when I watch games I don't get the impression that players are thinking, hmm what can I do to throw my opponent off and take an advantage. This isn't always true as I have seen some amazing things but most games just look formulaic.

Maybe that's what starcraft is, and I just got the wrong impression from watching bw matches because I don't understand that game as well.

It's probably the most mechanically challenging game there is, so I'm constantly seeking to improve my hand speed. It gets more fun the better you are.

Same. It's weird, but playing sc2 made me enjoy bw even more...

I find that what keeps me playing is letting myself enjoy being outfoxed. There are times when I'm playing someone and they do something a little novel and I just have to stop what I'm doing and type,

"Jesus, fair play, totally caught me out."

It forces me to not get crazy involved, and I like to think it makes them have a better time too

This is the best question I have ever read on TeamLiquid, simply amazing:

"HOW DO I ENJOY SC2?".

Stuning.

May i ask how old are you?

I suffer from the same problem. I love SC2, but I can't get into laddering, even though I want to. It's a strange duality to feel.

Day[9] JUST did a newbie tuesday on the subject. I HIGHLY recommend it: Day[9] Daily #269 - How to get into SC2!

A (very loose) summary of his advice above is:
* Get friend(s) who play, and talk about how awesome SC2 is. Watch pro matches over skype. Send each other replays and laugh about mistakes. Play vs. each other. Etc.
* Get a favorite pro who inspires you. Fan boy the shit out of him. Watch his replays. Talk about him w/ aforementioned friends.
* Play 1 (only one!) ladder game a day. You can do it. 10-20 mins and it's over. Give yourself two days off each week.
* One day, do something crazy
* One day, do some build and perfect it. You'll do this same build again every week and compare.
* One day, rip off a sweet build you saw a pro do.
* Give yourself a goal for every two weeks. It could just be "PLAY 10 games." It could be "Get 50 food by the 7 minute mark." Anything. As long as it's under your control (ie. NOT "get into gold")

If you want to chat about stuff a la #1 above, PM me on here, I'd be happy to have more SC2 friends dealing with the same things!

That's probably why 99% of the pros play..
Find me one progamer who says sc2 is more enjoyable than bw. They only play because it's so much easier to make a living off of sc2 in comparison.

What...
I'm all for excitement over games and loving sc2 but this seem ridiculous. Why would you try so hard to attempt to enjoy something you don't enjoy. Just go play something else
