Starcraft 2 is a complex game with many interesting game mechanics. I’ve realized that there is a LOT of misinformation going on and a LOT of misconceptions held about even some of the most common game mechanics. It’s not just limited to bronze players either. I’ve noticed that even pros on SOTG are often unsure about certain things, and I myself have been corrected on these forums as well. So here’s a little quiz to test your SC2 game knowledge. Many of these things are pretty obscure and either don’t matter at all or probably would never happen in a real game, so don’t take it too seriously. Have fun :D
BTW, I know that this quiz is a bit biased towards Protoss, but I’m a Protoss player so you’ll just have to deal with it for now. This is just the first one, if people like this I’ll make more.
Answers are in spoilers.

Scoring guide:
90-100: Cool, I’m glad SC2 game developers are reading TL. You should get back to work though, I want my balance patch. 80-89: Someone’s been studying Liquipedia… 70-79: Not bad. I hope you learned something. 60-69: Ok so GSL VODs are pretty fun to watch. You should try playing the actual game though. 0-59: Whatever you do, please don’t post in the SC2 strategy forums.

Wow, lots of things I didn't know. Thanks for this. Very cool!
|
Woa...some things I don't believe O_O
I trust you tested this all though...nice job ^^
ediT: i wonder if it would be a good idea to move it out of blogs as more people would see it and it was really cool. iunno. up to mods i suppose

Nice, taught me several things, but I think 3a isnt completely correct, Guardian Shield wont reduce damage if both are inside, but it will if the attacker is. It's just an animation (i might be wrong tho).
|
should rename protoss quiz imo
|
wait what? You get a full refund for killing a pylon while your units are warping in...?
Some things either shock me or I clearly do not play around with offrace spells or not, but I'm not allowed to post in the SC2 strategy forums I don't think. Damn, north american ladder must be really easy these days...

If a building is destroyed while it's making a unit, you get a full refund for the unit (and any that are queued as well).
That's probably the biggest WTF/misconception of this entire post.

You think I didn't test these out first? :p
Guardian shield still works if both units are inside. However guardian shield does not work against the melee attack of roaches and hydras (although those attacks are affected by range upgrades and not melee upgrades). Apparently it's more than just an animation.

Exactly. Most of my questions are there because the SC2 mechanic is different from the BW mechanic, and many old players just assumed that the BW mechanic still applies.

This post is a really good example why I prefer BW over SC2. So many things do not make sense, and I feel a lot of what is in this is broken.

Whoa, got 60. That was pretty hard. Well, I haven't played in a while: + Show Spoiler +

Wait, what? I had absolutely no idea about this.
Edit: Also quiz is bias against zerg players.

10 bucks TLO knows all this.

Wow, thank you. I definitely learned a lot this little quiz. Of course, it says I should stay out of the strat forum (not a complete surprise ).
Seriously though, you are right about that being the biggest misconception. I didnt realize you were refunded for the units being built by a destroyed buildings. I knew you were refunded if the warp-in pylon was destroyed, but didn't think it carried over..... definitely useful information!!

You forgot the biggest misconception about protoss mechanics: the majority of people believe that charge doesn't increase zealot movespeed while not charging. Husky said this during the PAX podcast and not a single one of the pros corrected him.
Charge DOES increase the normal movespeed of Zealots.

That one blew my mind. If you somehow managed to abuse that in a game (e.g., medivac with 4 scvs picking up tanks), you'd probably get accused of hacking.

4. (4 points) An unupgraded immortal at full shields inside a guardian shield gets hit by an unupgraded banshee. How many shield points does the immortal have remaining? + Show Spoiler + 84
I'm still trying to contemplate this one.
edit: durg, I didn't realize it was a dual shot type deal. Now it makes sense lol. Gimme a break, I play Protoss lol.

I got 87, and yes, I have been reading liquidpedia!
This is an awesome quiz, great job thinking of all these cases to test, you'd be awesome working for Blizzard's QA team.

c. Air units visually outside the shield, but shadow is inside the guardian shield I took this to mean the unit's projection on the ground (like the helper circle) rather than the actual shadow (which is displaced by the angle of the light).

I'm pretty sure this is c, right? I've actually (somehow) ran into this in a real game.
Just tested this, and damn, it turns out that it's b. I guess I fail.
I feel pretty good about how many of these I got right, but I was shocked at the guardian shield low/high ground stuff. I can't even think of the number of games I've pushed up a Terran's ramp with a sentry on the low ground throwing up guardian shield for attacking zealots. Oh, the shame!

I got tons of this right, but I cant believe I got the most important one wrong: GS doesn't work on roaches?!!

Nvm, I read it as roaches or hydras attacking with melee animation instead of roaches or hydras attacking with melee animation

64 >.> Despite playing Protoss, I'm pretty baffled that I get full refund if pylon is destroyed. Oh well, it's not like I play much :p Still, this quiz is about some factoids so what if a progamer did get less than 60?
|
Got 70, though it's mostly because I've tested similar things myself. Lots of funny things to know Note that in the campaign, medics can heal units inside bunkers or transports, too. I didn't know that guardian shield didn't apply for ground units on lower/higher ground.
|
66 =/
Most of the stuff I was wrong on was T/Z stuff.
Difficult quiz.
|
This post is completely awesome! Learned a few things.
I had so many misconceptions about Q.17...
I now realize how much attention and energy (irl energy) I have wasted on cancelling training units..
|
Btw, when you kill a pylon warping in stuff not only do you get your money back, but the cooldown time on the warpgates reset.
