Hey TL... First blog post, I figure, people here are quite well adjusted so I am asking for some help.
I've been wondering about what to get my girl for this valentines... It's been five months since we last saw each other (barring webcam chat) and she just flew back home this Valentines, I expect to see her in a matter of hours. I intend to see her right after work. If she isn't up yet, I might have to pass the time by laddering. But I intend to show up early morning with some flowers. What color should I get.
I'm a bit strapped on money but I would like to try and make it special since with will be our first valentines together. Flowers are quite expensive 'round this time of year. And I don't know much out of red roses... I know Blizzard fixed the bug where the flowers wont show up in the fog of war if Zerg spawns there... But I seriously don't know anything about flowers.
I don't have a great deal of money to work with so any suggestions would help.
Help?

I'd say if it's still a casual relationship get her one red rose, but if it's serious get her a whole bunch. I don't think you can really go with anything different for valentines day unless you know she specifically likes one certain type of flower.

If it's your first Valentines together you shouldn't worry about how much you should spend. Seeing each other for the first time since almost half a year should be all you need.
In case you absolutely want to give her some flowers, get a single red rose with some of those greens that florists have for decorational purposes. It's the thought that counts.

Thank god I live in a country where Valentines isn't that big a deal.
If you want to do something special, but not spend a lot of money, I'd say buy her some flowers and take her on a picnic (if the weather in the Philippines permits that atm...). It'll take some effort on your part since you should try to make it as nice as possible and get some food she really likes (Sushi's a good idea if she likes that), but I've had some very good experiences with that.

It started out as a one-night thing but it went on from there. I'm quite inept at this since I don't really know a lot of relationships and I haven't been in a lot either. All I know about dating is what I see in the movies, and as we all know, that movies=/=real life.
Thanks Nataziel. Though based on my budget, I think I'll be veering away from the dozen roses. Get her a few. Our relationship is quite serious though. But not as serious as ZvT.

Yeah dude, just get something that says you love her, don't stress over not spending enough money, just you two being together after so long apart will be awesome! Have a good one buddy

Thanks guys, I think I'm gonna go with a single rose or three if I can afford it and just wing it. Picnic idea is nice, and it is cool this time of year. Haha well, good luck with your valentines. And thanks.

I have been in the same relationship for 5 years or so, and never made a big deal out of valentines day or anything. Probably because we are both geeks, gamers xD
Anyway, I can see why you want to make your valentines day special though. It's hard to come up with an advice without knowing much about either of you, but you could go for some standard teddybear or something, just as a token of your love. Personally I have never been a big fan of flowers in general, but thats just me. Everyone got their own taste
I once did get a single red rose though, and even though I was embarrassed by it at the time(I guess I was kind of immature), it was kind of cute when thinking back to it. Even though the relationship didn't last, I still remember the rose, I also dried it and kept it for a long time,
Either way, good luck with making your valentines day special, enjoy your time with your girl

ah idea i got from someone i was working with yesterday; learn origami and make a dozen PAPER roses, in red construction paper..
it'd be kinda different, right? cheap, but cool if you do it right.

make a nice dinner for her... maybe set the place up nicely with candles and dim the lights... she should enjoy that...
|
Yeah I should also probably play "turn the lights down low" by Bob marley to set the mood. Origami paper roses with red construction paper... great idea... and affordable too. I wish I'd posted this sooner so I'd have time to do it.
I'm looking into origami rose right now. while i'm at work. this origami seems harder than burrow microing roaches.

I'm quite inept at this since I don't really know a lot of relationships and I haven't been in a lot either. All I know about dating is what I see in the movies, and as we all know, that movies=/=real life. Screw the flowers, get her an action figure. Girls these days think it's sexist if you get them flowers, so I recommend you treat them like little boys instead.
|
Why don't you make her something instead of buying her flowers? How about a cake or a few cupcakes...?
|
Because then they'll have two cakes and 48 cupcakes, Cambium.

If you're looking into origami roses, some variation of Kawasaki's rose is the one you want. That said, without any experience you might find it tricky to make it look as good as it should.
Putting thought into what you do is WAY more important than sinking money into what you do. You want the cost of things to be the last thing that either of you think about tomorrow. If it's been a long time since you saw each other, plan a fun day together, go take her out to do something both of you enjoy. All those things you haven't been able to do over the last five months -- try and fit the best of them in now that you can. Something handmade (or a single rose) plus a fun little excursion is a thousand times better than a dozen roses and a fancy dinner.
