...but first off, an introduction. skip down below if you'd like! + Show Spoiler +Hello TeamLiquid! I joined a while ago, but I've still been a bit on the lurking side of things. Not having much of any BW experience and only a couple of months of SC2 experience (and I'm still gold), I didn't feel like I had anything worthwhile to contribute...but I figure as long as I stay out of the SC2 or BW strategy board I should be fine! Let's see, anything else... I'm a high school student at one of the top (public) schools in the USA, and I'm starting to hate the fact that I actually have to apply myself and actually study I'm the only female at my school's StarCraft club, but that doesn't really bother me. I don't bring attention to it, and no one else does. Except for when they tell me to make a sandwich. That's about all I got, so kudos to you if you actually read this!
Rant incoming.
When I started playing MMOs about three years ago, I had no idea what I was in for. My first MMO was Ragnarok Online, which is one of the most bot-filled places I've ever seen xD Anyway, when you signed up for an account, it would ask for your gender. I clicked female, since I knew that I did, in fact, have two X chromosomes.
I kept on getting all this free stuff - money, items; I'd ask if someone had a warp and someone would just give me 30k :/ I was like "wtf that's not a warp D:" I didn't make the connection that they were giving me all this free stuff simply because I had clicked 'female' when I made my account. It kind of weirds me out, since I think I need to give them something in return for their generosity, but then they just walk off with no friend request or anything that could be used to find me again - or give me a chance to repay them.
About a year after all that mess, I became good friends with a handful of guildmates. One of them came out and just blatantly asked me and a RL friend if we were really female - apparently a lot of people choose to make female characters just for the sake of getting items. I guess I didn't grasp the concept that one could completely change their identity on the internet like that haha. That kind of shocked me, and I've always wondered how many people are what they appear to be on the internet. Though I always base people on their personalities - do some people go further than just picking up a different sprite to actually changing their personalities when they pick up that cloak of anonymity...?
TL;DR: My question to you TL - have you ever made a female character in an MMO? If so, why? Do you enjoy getting the free items or does it bother you? Also, have you ever changed to a different personality when you're on the internet? Why?

Well, if I have to stare at either a dudes ass, or a chicks ass for hours..... id rather stare at a females. But thats just me.

I innocently chose female in MMO's when I was younger, because I didn't like boy characters. (I'm female as well.) I did get lots of free things. It confused me. O_O I got older, and I started checking out MMO's again(about a year or two ago), and I would play a few geared towards younger audiences with a few of my older friends, because they were cute and the player base wasn't very large. I would honestly get lots of young boys(don't take this the wrong way) giving me free items, asking to be my friend, and all that. I stopped playing them, because it felt incredibly wrong. LOL.
When I started playing Counterstrike, I would constantly get people adding me to their friends, talking to me, or being rude, because I was female. I didn't mind them adding me to their friends, but when I started getting rude comments, I started to hide my female-ness a bit. But I stopped caring, made more "friends"(whether they were friends or not, but I knew I had real friends in a few people -shrug-), and enjoyed playing~ For the past year, I've had guys randomly buy me games on steam. I have not purchased a single game I own on steam. .__.;; It bothers me. xP
|
Basically what DyEnasTy said, female characters tend to be hotter unless its a tauren. Also, no one present day would give you free items just for having a female character. Only thing I've ever done to change personality is to try to be a little bit cooler than I actually am.
Edit: I stand corrected, apparently there are sad souls out there that'll give a girl free stuff just for existing >.>
|
I actually know an irl girl ingame and shes the one who keeps buying me stuff :/ im like the complete opposite to the rule haha. But no i wouldnt make a female char for free stuff, i made a female human when i faction changed because i prefered the casting animations and i wanted the racial.
|
Ussually my mains are males, and some alts females, i ussually like the female "models" more.... i've tried to change my personality ingame.. i cant
|
@DyEnasTy & Kakera & nekuodah & Inzek: That makes sense. I've heard some RL friends justify it by saying that the animations or form of the characters were better, or something along those lines.

I've stayed away from MMOs lately - or played male characters - because they've gone from just giving items to flat out flirting. internet flirting is awkward :/ especially when they might be iunno ten or something D:

My main character in any of the few MMOs I've played was a male (provided I have the option). Since it's the one I play with the most, that's what I'd like to be seen as by my in-game friends
I usually have a couple of female alts though. Funny thing is, people in general tend to treat me better (not noticeably better but better nevertheless) with a female alt than my male main, even if I make it clear that I'm a guy in real life :/
|
When I've made female characters in the past, the extra attention bothered me. I don't want to be treated differently because of the gender of my character.

People hit on females in every single game I've played. Even if theyh weren't sure it was actually a female.
This one guy in Counterstrike sounded like a 12 year old boy. People were unsure if it was male or female. And I remember one clan member banning some kid for making inappropriate comments to a girl on the clan. It's kind of gross. There was also one really talkative female that people always talked to. She just annoyed me, so I don't know if they liked her personality, or that she was a girl.

That's the way I feel, too. I couldn't change my gender on RO, but if I could I would. It seems wrong to have them give me stuff simply because of the difference in gender

^my toon!
When I first started wow i picked a male but then realized that the female animations were much smoother. Seriously, the male animations make it look like the character is on LSD.
I've also been pretty much running around with gladiator/retarded pvp gear so nobody gives me anything.
But yeah, i mean... really it's the same in real life if you think about. Guys typically get girls free stuff for whatever reason ( it's most likely to get in your pants) like dinner/jewely/tickets whatever.
Actually now that I think about, men LOVE to GIVE to women for absolutely nothing in return. Probably some kind of evolutionary biological thing from when we helped you scrubs stay alive in the wild!

I always make female characters, free stuff and people are generally friendlier to you. I never actually pretend to be female though, for some reason people rarely ask.

no because im socially awkward as a girl.. Its also insane how Girls can get all the shit that they want if they just add people in Facebook or Myspace

I prefer to play female characters for the look and because it feels ten times funnier to crush someone in competition with a female face (losing to a girl). Perhaps that's childish, but I'm very competitive at everything I do and I give the effort to get good at everything that interests me.
My first real character in WoW that I stuck with was a female Draenei mage, and it's funny the kinds of reactions that I got. I made it clear to anyone who even wondered about my sex that I was male, and anyone who heard me on ventrilo, etc. was blessed with my deep, deep voice, yet people still joked around with me in a more sensitive manner. I think that the idea of what is feminine and what is not in our culture has been ingrained so deeply that even seeing a female face changes the way that people interact. But I could be wrong.
|
Well, its the internet. Lonely nerds and all that. I played a female character quite often in lineage 2 but usually with a male-ish name so i didnt get much free stuff
|
completely the opposite in my experience
looking for more in a bg group ---> chick wants in ---> no thanks

I play WoW. Most of my toons are female just because the male models look retarded in general. I have a few male ones, though. In WoW, though, most ppl kind of assume you're male regardless.

Actually, aside from "looking pretty" and the sentimental value behind being given jewelry, jewelry makes a great asset.
That's because jewelry hardly ( if ever ) depreciates in value. So if your boyfriend buys you a $7,000 tennis diamond necklace it's basically a walking piggy bank. You can cash that in whenever you need. Most "practical" stuff depreciates in value or becomes valueless.
Other than that, most guys don't care for jewelry. We just buy it because we know you like it.

A lot of people are mentioning ragnarok online which is a game that seems to skew a bit younger. Maybe that has a lot to do with it? I feel that younger gamers are more likely to play as whatever gender they are whereas an older person wouldnt put as much thought into it. I never got the feeling that people on WoW were nicer to someone just because they played a girl character although someone who was actually a girl is a different story.
Also, this talk of free stuff reminded me of one of the nicer moments from playing RO. One day while i was idling on prontera, someone decided to open trade with me and give me 2 million zeny- this was on the official server too so it was quite a sum. I don't think gender played a role though as i (being a 13 year old boy at the time) had a boy sprite, i guess someone was just feeling generous that day.

Sometimes male sometimes female. I just choose whatever looks better and suits my class' stereotype better.

Actually, something I notice, now that I open up an old MMO.. I've made quite a few male characters too, but they're INCREDIBLY female looking. People still talk to me. :U Girly guys.. hmm..

I like playing female characters in MMOs usually because of their aesthetic. I find races and classes in WoW have predetermined stereotypes surrounding them, in my mind at least, and I sometimes like to play to that. i.e. Female Blood Elf Mage, or Male Orc Warrior. Sometimes I just really love the look of a specific class/race/gender combo and stick with it through the years, like Female Paladin or Male (Gnome) Mage. ^^
|
Females never give me free stuff for being male...
All joking aside, Some players often give items/money to newer players so that probably has played some role in it. Personally I am male and play a male character though I do not have a particular reason for it, Though I often play Melee classes so I suppose that may have something to do with it indirectly.

It's an expensive diamond though, which is what drives the overall price up. I think if you poke around their website you can find the same design but a lesser-quality diamond.
But really it's the quality of the diamond that makes it what it is.

I will shamelessly admit that in my WoW days I loved to play dress up with my human male paladin on my RP server. Yeah I'm a guy and I liked dressing up Torenhire in WoW...
+ Show Spoiler +http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa80/Torenhire/WoW%20Screens/WoWScrnShot_022308_165738.jpg
My fancy RP set wooo!
Now that everyone is questioning my sexuality...
I tend to get...really immersed in the storyline of whatever I'm playing. So if I'm actually planning on roleplaying in any game, it's generally male. Just because it's more natural for me to tell a story, or project my character in a male sense.
in non-RP games though, I just roll with whatever makes more sense to me...like the casters with all their fancy robes and whatnot...I've just been stuffed into the stereotype "in the fray" as males and support classes as female, so I generally play that.
A lot of games though they seem to work way more on the females than the males in terms of personality, acting, character customization, animations...Sometimes playing a game as male can feel like a different game than playing as a female. I know of an offline RPG that the game felt COMPLETELY different as a female even though it's the same exact linear RPG, because of the acting, animations...just felt more actiony, more flashy...male was soooo boring after female!
Another thing I found kind of funny, I used to play a ton of EVE online as well, and eventually my girlfriend decided to give it a try as we both got bored on WoW ( where I met her.. hooked up at hte guild summer vacation woot! :x ) so as she's in the "nooby zone"...there isn't really one, but there's game masters and stuff there to answer questions and such, some guild master was ALL over her for hours, trying to help her, getting her started, she basically had to tell him to piss off because he was so infatuated with her right off the bat. I told her she shouldn't have said "boyfriend" when he asked what got her into EVE, but...oh well
|
i make whatever aestethically (sp) looks better.
e.g.... in wow...
undead male rogue, cuz its killing shit undead male death knight, cuz its killing shit female blood elf paladin, cuz it was healing shit
i just think of the char, its goal, and what i want that character to look like in that case
|
i make female chars all the times even tho im a guy ... i play mostly archer/rogue type of toons so i feel girls are more agile ;p
|
One of my most-played WoW characters was a female Orc Death Knight -TANK-.
I have no shame in admitting I threw '<3' and ':3~' and '^__^' around all the time. Got me plenty of stuff, too~.

It's the thought that counts, though. I told her she shouldn't have said "boyfriend" when he asked what got her into EVE, but...oh well Haha that's great. I had that happen to me in one game (Perfect World I think), and one of my good friends (who is male) happened to overhear me complaining about it, and told me I should say that I have a lesbian lover x.x seemed to work though! But he was all flirty and creepy as well as trying to help me as a newbie, so.

Oh god funny story. My brother was playing Conquer a pretty old MMO don't know if it's around anymore. Anyways. He made a female character and started this party for doing quests and one of the guys in the clan decided he wanted to marry my bro's char. Which is possible you don't have to pay anything either. So they get married.. and my brother just goes like.. O.o... He makes a new character and never logs onto that old one. My funny story. I laughed so hard as a kid when that happened. He was playing and was just like. "He wants to marry me! AHAHAHAH!"

I too discovered the power of female MMO characters when I made my first Light Elf in L2 beta. Like someone else said, I did it just because she was cute and the male light elves were little pussies. In WoW all of my main characters have been male (just because they have the best casting/dance animations), but I do make female alts and sometimes get special treatment. I haven't gotten any free stuff out of it (although I occasionally get free stuff for being a nice guy ) but sometimes I'll go along with it just to fuck with people. :x

When I used to play WoW my character was a female orc with ponytails. I just preferred the look of the model to the male one, and generally my gear was high end, I had one of the first shadowmournes on the server (if you didn't play wow, big axe, kind of rare), and if I ended up idling in a major city for more than a few minutes I would always get random whispers "cute girl msn??" "hey r u rly girl" "cute hair ;P" and end up with random items, gold, and a shit ton of pets in my mailbox.
I never did anything to encourage it and if anyone ever asked me straight up I said I was a guy. Most never even asked, shrug. It never really bothered me, and I definitely didn't do it on purpose, but sometimes I'd get some funny shit. It would probably have been a million times worse on alliance as a nelf female.
