I got word wednesday night that a club at my school was gonna host a CoD Blackops tournament as a fundraiser. I got interested and asked my friend/neighbor/classmate to play with me (Lets call him Johnny...which is actually his name oO) and he was like okay lets do this.
So it was scheduled for friday at 4PM and we hang out at school waiting. Interestingly enough, Johnny lost his phone which got him really really angry. We got to the LAN room where they were setting up. The assumption was that we were to play on projectors, split screen (It was a 2v2 tournament) but we ended up using old tube TVs cause the projectors lagged. ><
Which was cool with me. So we pay the entry fee (5$ per person, high but its worth the fun i thought) and get set up for a practice game where I just warmed up my hands cause I hadn't played since last Saturday. Blah blah, we set up matches and play one of my friends and some guy I watched warm up and thought was pretty decent. (To pump myself up I was like...yeah i'm better... but i didn't mean it obviously).
This is probably a good time to mention that there were two consoles, PS3 and Xbox (I was under xbox) and that they were supposed to be separate tournaments. Rules for Bo3s which was the main format was 2 games using ONLY default classes (including the 5 custom ones that were given, only we can't change them). Game 3 if it got to it we were allowed ONE custom class for the game. Killstreaks were up to us (although every team said no RCxD's), though round one we agreed on standard 3/5/7 (spy plane, crate, heli) and it was first to 2500 or highest score within 10 minutes.
So we get in and set up. It was LAN over a wifi network so we traded off host for map choice. Most matches I picked the default M16 class while Johnny went with the MP5k. Other teams stayed similar
Round 1, Game 1:
We deferred host (which actually didn't matter as much as it could have, but it made a few kills a lot harder ><) for map choice. Johnny picks Grid cause he said he felt good on that and I wanted to save my choice till game 3 if it went to it.
Game starts, I pick up a double kill right away. I'm not used to Johnny's playstyle too well in 2v2 but we figured it out and called out. Pretty easy win (At the end we screwed around and tried to get pistol kills....bad idea), i think it was 2500-2100. He actually got the pistol kill :\.
Round 1, Game 2:
A lot harder. The other team picked Jungle and that map is... I feel its the worst map in the game. ><. Basically we played village really bad because we spawned in the outskirts (either by the ruins or houses) and they played the middle and we rushed a lot, only we didn't actually run together. We lost around the same score, ~2100-2500.
Round 1, Game 3:
I pick Firing Range. My go-to map because I just know it really well. ...I was mad. We lost at JUNGLE. worst map in the game and now we got custom classes. This was for MONEY. (lol) and my team puts on classes we know we can use. I went with AK47, dual mags while Johnny picked ak-74u with...something. Other team ran a commando and something else. I was mad, Johnny was mad, we had real guns, real killstreaks (3/4/5 with hardline). We won 2500-1400. Shake the guys' hands, call GG (LOL) and wait till next round.
This part is wacky. Apparently that was the ONLY xbox team that signed up. The PS3s also were lagging (the whole projector thing) so what the tournament people decided was to merge the two. I was kinda like, :\ because they didn't sign up for xbox but whatever. There were 6 teams basically, 2 xbox and 4ps3 so to be fair they ran the entire tournament of ps3 and then the winner got to play us in the grand final. So basically a round 2 bye. Johnny scouted their playstyle (also a haha thing) and basically he just said they weren't that goood. Which helped because....
Round 3, Game 1:
Seriously, Jungle again. The other team noticed we lost a Jungle game and picked it. We called good luck have fun dont camp (which i actually do call out before call of duty matches, LOL) and went off. The game was seriously TENSE. We got to the point where it was 2100-2300 near the end with both teams set up near village area of Jungle. One of them pushed from their inside position while we had outside ruins and the other backed him up. I picked up one and Johnny the other, but not till after one of us died (i think it was me...). 2300-2400, one of us gets a kill (actually i think it was johnny that died) and we tie the game with one kill left. Needless to say, we camped lol. Seriously though our hearts were POUNDING. we actually sang Eminem's Lose Yourself. me and a spectator screamed
"KNEES WEAK ARMS ARE HEAVY THERES VOMIT ON HIS SWEATER ALREADY, MOMS SPAGHETTI HE'S NERVOUS, BUT ON THE SURFACE HE LOOKS CALM AND READY TO DROP BOMBS, BUT HE KEEPS ON FORGETT-
Me and johnny moved around the map and tried to find them but we hugged walls and they apparently did the same? Cause we couldn't find them for a while. But then we did, and I saw someone's prone head and started shooting by the bottom river gate toward the village. The TV didn't let me see where he was so he strafed to my right/his left and started shooting back. I was like...my screen is red but SUDDENLY JOHNNY COMES UP AND POPS HIM ONCE. GG, 2500-2400. They were mad haha.
Gonna make some excuses here and say that a lot of the game was using flash grenades and they got 2 kills on us early in the game when we were changing settings...but then again we camped kinda hard near the end to not die.

Round 3, Game 2:
OH SNAP WTF. Our map. Firing Range again. my settings somehow set to invert and i died ><. But I picked it up and we did our thing and traded a lot of kills. Johnny did overall better (5 napalms lol), I got a few UAVs, 4 assists. Late game, 2400-2300. We hunt for them separately and i find the last guy in the corner near the middle. ...boom boom boom BRAT BRAT BRAT its like a BR fight cause we both had m16s. my heart was again going THUMP THUMP like MAD cause we were a kill off from winning.
It was a long and intense (like 4 bursts) BR fight, but I played a LOT of halo 3 and won the fight

GG.
...
shook hands, called GG. It was friendly over all but still, this was the first time ever i've actually competed in a competitive setting not online. To be fair, call of duty is still call of duty (and not quite starcraft) but it was really, really fun.
Plus we made 20$ (split between us two). Not too bad ^^
if you read it all and haven't laughed at call of duty i applaud you.
tl;dr
+ Show Spoiler +
i played a call of duty and won 20$
