Hi,
I wasn't sure where to post this, and it's been forever since I posted so I just posted here.. Feel free to move the post where it belongs though!
So anyways, I am going to book a trip to vegas for my g.f and I for reading week, probably a 5 day trip Feb 18-23, maybe 7 days depending. We are looking at the MGM grand. I have some questions I really want answered and was wondering if any of you seasoned vegas vacationers could answer them!
Is MGM grand a decent hotel? We are mostly focused on shows, as she is not 21 so casinos and bars are not a option... I'm guessing there will be a lot of dining and just going shopping at the outlet malls.
Right now, looking at Expedia.ca, the best price I can get is $1671 for 2 people, round trip and 5 nights at MGM. Departing from Winnipeg. Is that any good? Could I get a better price if I wait, or if I call a travel agency? I can also leave out of Edmonton, as I see that the Winnipeg flights stop in Calgary or Vancouver anyways... Would that be a better option?
Besides going to some shows and shopping, what else could we do there? She's only 20 so it kinda sucks but I am getting really sick of this weather and mexico is not an option because of the drug war..
Thanks for reading and thx in advance for the help! Would just really like to know if I am getting a decent price in $1671 for the 5 night trip at MGM and if MGM is recommended for a couple(University).
Budget for trip is ~$3000

Not sure how upscale you are looking to go, but if you are looking to do it cheaper look at TI.
Its located basically in the middle of the strip across the street from the Venetian, and basically central to all of the good clubs.
If you guys are planning on going clubbing try and find a promoter to put you on the list so your gf gets in free and youll get in at half off.
There is a club at the Encore or the Wynn called XS. (excess) It is simply amazing, ive had a blast both times ive been.

MGM Grand is nothing special, but it's not a shit hole or anything. It's one of the older hotels on the strip. Also, if she's not 21 you're going to be BORED OUT OF YOUR MIND if you stay for FIVE days (let alone 7). Seriously, take this from someone who went to Vegas 5 (maybe 6?) times before he turned 21, it was torcherous.. theres not much to do honestly. After you turn 21 though, holy crap vegas is AWESOME! You could always just buy drinks for yourself and your gf and just roam the strip drunk, that's always fun.
I won't comment on prices, as I'm not really sure. someone else can probably tell you better than i can.
edit: to the guy above me, she can't go to a club if she's not 21, but i agree XS is awesome.

i'm told the MGM signature is a good room etc... but it's a long walk to any casino.

I just stayed at the MGM a week and a half ago and I would say it's a pretty decent hotel. It's cheap-ish, but a nice hotel and it's pretty close to everything. If you're planning to see a Cirque du Soleil show, I would recommend Ka (it's right in the MGM). Mystere is cheaper but I found Ka a lot more entertaining.
Also, dining in Vegas is pretty expensive...but if you've got the bread for it I would suggest one of Rio's buffets. The Carnival one is pretty good (25$/person) but the seafood one has amazing king crab (38$/person).

MGM Grand is ok. The room is pretty basic, without much in extras. The hotel itself is decent, with a large casino floor, lion habitat, and some nice dining options.
I recently stayed at the Flamingo GO room, which is cheaper than the MGM Grand's basic room, but also better IMO. For example, the GO room had a fridge, but MGM's basic room does not. The Flamingo hotel itself is kind of old, but it doesn't really matter since you can always just walk to the other hotels.
In terms of location, it probably depends on what you want. MGM Grand is closer to places like Aria/City Center/Cosmopolitan, but Flamingo is closer to Caesar's Palace/Venetian/Wynn.
For food, you have many great choices along the strip. I would highly recommend going to Bouchon at the Venetian for Brunch (the Chicken and Waffles are amazing). They also serve dinner, which is great as well. Another place that I thought was really good was Bradley Ogden at Caesar's Palace. Their regular menu is a bit pricey, but their lounge menu (which includes an amazing burger) is more affordable.
As Gatsbi mentioned, I do think you'll be a bit limited by the age factor if you're going for five days. However, there is still a fair amount of stuff to do.
For shows, I recommend Blue Man Group at the Venetian/Palazzo. It's hard to describe the show, but it involves a lot of music and comedy and audience interaction. I've also seen Lion King, which is good if you like musicals. However, it's at the far south location of the strip at Mandalay Bay.
You can always visit the free attractions (like the Bellagio Fountains), or go to a spa.
