I find it strange that it took me a race change to jump up to Diamond. I race changed from Zerg to Protoss about two weeks ago and it improved my play astronomically. The strange thing is that I still consider myself a Zerg player who's dabbling in Protoss rather than a Protoss player who came from Zerg -- every 30 seconds or so I still try to inject .
I think the fact of the matter is that Protoss is easier for me to control, even with far less practice. Build warpgates, build auxiliary production structures (stargate, robo), build army every chance you have, expand. With Zerg it's harder to make sure everything's rallied correctly, have picture-perfect scouting 90% of the time, be ready to power drone the first second you can, and still have enough units in the right composition to kill whatever your opponent is throwing against you. I find that most early-game pushes against P can be mostly ignored if I go 3gate core expand and the only mid-game aggression I need to worry about is harassment or a tank contain. As Zerg, I need to dynamically change my strategy and tactics depending on what I scout; as Protoss, I need to choose Colossus or High Templar .
I plan on solidifying my spot on the ladder for awhile, get into 1.2 and keep my spot, then practice Terran for a bit and race change again to get the trifecta. I find that now that I've played Protoss, going back and laddering in ZvP will be less...obscure. I'll know exactly when those timings come, exactly when P is feeling weak, and exactly when it's safe to expand having played the other side of that matchup. I hope to feel the same way about my ZvT someday, and maybe even go Random for the hell of it. I do enjoy Protoss, but sometimes I wake up in a cold sweat that Idra's gonna break into my house and call me out on my lack of self-respect for race changing away from the zergies
Let me sum up: 3 months work, 2 races, and 1 placement match coming up in a week or so all add up to 2200 points in the Diamond league. Go me.
