So I found a jar of piroulines on the kitchen table,

Yes, these delicious things

and being suspicious of everything in my house like I always am (our pantry has never been emptied in the 8 years we've been living here), I checked the expiration date. It said February. Yay!

2008.

From there, I went to the office to ask my dad about them.

"Did you open the can of piroulines?"

A nod.

"Did you eat any?"

Affirmative.

"Did you see the expiration date? It expires. 2008."

"Oh, really? That's okay. Food is like medicine. It doesn't matter if it expires."

"..."

"It's food! Just taste it, if it tastes funny, don't keep eating."

I returned to the kitchen table. I wasn't going to eat one, I swear. But the advice sounded so practical, and it looked too delicious. So I did. And it was delicious.

A few hours later, I saw my dad wandering in and out of the kitchen. He asked me whether I wanted any more piroulines, and I said maybe later--but then I noticed he was holding a giant deep fryer pan with all the piroulines inside.

"Did something happen to your stomach?"

"No, I'm just throwing these away."

Only later, during dinner, does he tell me that he threw them away because there were tiny white worms in the piroulines. My mother assures me that they were not worms, but fungi. I don't know which answer I prefer. Apparently my dad was contemplating deep frying the fungus away, but decided against it.

I honestly wish I had a camera, because then I could take pictures of all the half-baked ideas and expired might-have-beens around the house. For example, he put a half rotten turnip and a sprig of green onion in a bucket of oil (to "rejuvenate" it, he said), left it there for a month and a half, and now the turnip is indeed green again. He frequently makes banana-black-sesame-cabbage-chicken-noodles ("the black sesame is the secret ingredient!"). When I complained about making a spinach & garlic dish too salty, my dad grabbed it all and put it in his tea ("so it wouldn't be as salty").

I need some delicious food pictures to wash this new pirouline memory out of my mind.

Oh, Korea.

Feel free to share your food horror stories! <3 Although to be honest, instead of feeling better by sharing this experience, I'm actually feeling a little queasy after writing this blog.

If you were already suspicious of the edibility of those things... did you not look to see if there was anything growing on/in it? Though I guess in retrospect it was probably better that you didn't look and find white worms / fungi halfway into one of those things...

T_T yeah, I looked but didn't see anything, and I nibbled on one end and didn't feel weird immediately. I figured since it was mostly chocolate and sealed it might be okay, but that was a bad assumption on my part.

T_________T I'm so sorry T________T I've had a sort of similar experience...
I remember one time my family and I were eating a type of instant noodle called Chapagetti and as we ate, I noticed there were tiny little white squiggly things everywhere. So I asked, "Um, dad. Are these worms?" And at first he brushed it off but then as we kept eating he started poking at them and noticed that they were, indeed, small little newborns, probably some type of fly or something T_____T. He later checked the wrapper and noticed there were some more that were clinging to the wrapper too. I have NO idea how he failed to notice any of this in the cooking process but a;lskdfjl;akejwfio;ajsd;lfjekl;. So grosssssssssssss a;ldfjs;klfd

i am so sorry T___T oh my god this reminds me of more terrible memories.

i was washing the rice when some pieces of rice floated to the top of the water. i was suspicious since it seemed to have a different density than rice, but then IT MOVED AND HAD SEGMENTS.

then we found mommy moths and baby larva (so hard to spot, please wash your rice properly, folks) in the rice bag.

Once I was eating steamed broccoli and noticed a small white grub attached on the inside, now I always check before I eat this vegetable

Once I hastily drank chocolate milk (gone bad) without paying attention to its discoloration and that was pretty unpleasant

Nothing too memorable besides that, guess it's better than seeing live worms

Oh my god. That has happened to me too, except we noticed it before the wash-the-rice step.

I can honestly say I'm OCD when it comes to expiration dates and checking food. I will literally hunt down the gallon of milk with the furthest expiration date even if I have to crawl into the cooler, I check everything before I cook it and throw canned and boxed food out weeks before it expires. That said, I have never had a problem with accidentally eating strange bugs or weird fungi.

Moral of the story: Check things before devouring them, saves you the creep out factor later.

I'm pretty sure all dads reach a point in their lives where they do this with all kinds of food products... my father regularly cuts out the rotten parts of an apple, just to eat a tiny uncompromised portion. I also recently learned that the breakfast I loved as a little kid, eggs on a raft (bread with hole in ripped in middle, drop egg in on pan and fry) was actually created because he went to cook us breakfast once and the bread was bad...

Lol this makes me glad that my mom is really good at managing the food cabinet, there are a few expired things once in a while, at which point my brother, sister, or I point it out and we're like this thing is old

then we take it out, see if its nasty, and throw it out.

have fun with maggots in your stomach mona!

I have a serious distrust of milk.
About 5 years ago, our fridge started to break, it was a slow process it took over 3 years, but any milk you put in the fridge, once opened did not last even a day, I must have taken out what should have been a perfectly fine bottle of milk so many times, poured it on my cereal, chowing down before realising it was rancid.
Now every bottle of milk I use has to go through a rigorous screening process of 3 stages of sniffing and 2 stages of tasting.
I've really tried to break out of the obsessive screening, but I feel horribly complied every time I pour.
