All right, so I went to an indoor badminton court, and I just see a bunch of old people playing, so I decide to wait for some people my age to start playing. Now, this was about the second time I've ever played badminton, but you know, how hard can it be? I can play tennis decently, and I'm fairly athletic, so I wasn't expecting much. Boy, was I wrong.
This old grandma, like 60 years old, asks me to play, and I say ok. I was going to go easy on her, until I saw her hit the ball. Man, that thing went like a 100 mph. It was faster than a damn baseball pitch lol. I proceed to get beat 21-0. And it wasn't just this, she went on to talk trash to me afterwards. She went on about how I couldn't hit the ball like a man, and how she thought I was in elementary school (I am in high school).
During the game, she asks me if I ate lunch, and I reply that I did, and then she asks me why I can't hit the ball hard even though I ate. Then she asks how old I am, and I reply 17, and she says, "Wow, I thought you were in elementary school. You look really young for your age." I got my pride wounded, but what am I gonna do, she kicked my ass in badminton, and in Korea, it is really really bad to say anything disrespectful to your elders. So I just walk away, and sit down on a bench, watching others play.
I looked carefully, and realized all the people were wearing special badminton clothes and shoes. Seriously, you should have seen them, they were like wearing a badminton uniform or something. And even though they were old, they hit the ball faster than a damn tennis serve.
Man, I will never look at badminton, or old people in the same way ever again.

Clearly shows how egoistic you are when you go by appearances Just always do your best and just crush every opponent you can :D
You got served for underestimating her
But the grandma trash talking is obviously bad but atleast she's competitive lol.

Yeah, but I mean, what would you do if some really old person came up to you and asked you to play 1v1 against him in basketball. I think most people would go easy on them, even if they aren't egoistic. But yes, I did underestimate her, and I did get served. And I even got bm'ed too

I know how you feel... but in China.... they kicked my ass in ping pong o.0

Badminton is the hardest sport ever... I don't know how people can return one of those birdie smashes. They go from their racket to the ground before you even see their racket move... Nothing like tennis, imo.
|
Grackma ... lol genius, but damn 60 year old ... yeah anyone would've went easy on someone like that just because it's logical. It's not like your going in with the mindset "I'm going to destroy them".

Badminton is no jokes man. + Show Spoiler +
Got raped by a girl one month ago... i didn't even shake hands, i just muttered "well played" without looking her. I felt like a huge loser during one week lol. Not because i have lost but because i behaved like a very insecure and rude guy I can't wait to play her again just because i want to prove that i'm not a sore loser this time.
So don't feel bad man, the most important thing as an amateur is not to win, it is to get better and to be mannered. And since you need to lose a lot to better players if you want to improve you should't get angry if a grandma kick your ass :p

I just searched Wikipedia for the the badminton ball, the shuttlecock (hur hur):
Feather shuttles may come off the strings at speeds in excess of 320 km/h (200 mph) but slow down faster as they drop.
Holy Check, you weren't lying about being faster than a baseball pitch! Thanks for the heads up, now I know not to play badminton with anyone that could potentially humiliate me lol.

Koreans are so serious about how "skilled" one is.. Competition seems very thick. even between a 60 year old and a teenager...

Olds in Asia are not to be trifled with.
Its nice to be in a place that still values its elders.
Obesity does not exist outside of the globalized McIpod youth (in China).
It's pretty amazing the way public parks function in Beijing. From dawn till dusk hundreds of people can be found playing badmintion, chinese chess, ping-pong, tai ji, walking, singing, etc.

Such a good sport. I started playing in the october of last year. Some of my friends are just insanely good at the game, but it helps me improve quickly. I advise you to stick to the sport for sure. One of my favourite things about the sport is that anybody of any stature can get really good. Of course there is an ideal physique, but it's all mostly about skill and technique rather than physique.
Oh and for the record, a couple months ago, I got served by a lady in her late 40's. It's really not that uncommon. Pretty damn funny that she bm'ed you afterwards Hopefully you gain some motivation to improve from this experience rather than quitting. Don't carry pride in this sport, it'll just be shattered by some the people that you'd least expect.

When I saw the blog title I hoped it was about Starcraft, so I could make a joke about her age being higher than her APM.
Still a good read though~

Guess I'm like the only one who wouldn't go easy on anyone like an elder >< I'm Asian and I respect my elders very much but when competing my parent's always told me to give everything I got no matter who. An elder may look fragile but that's a presumption hence I will never back down even if he/she looks crippled. I just treat everyone the same no matter the age or looks when it comes to any game.
This blog just showed me that looks / age doesn't matter because they can still beat you in a game which I respect the elder for being able to compete very well with you tazza.
Just saying that if I were you I'd have given everything I got without BM. I mean if an elder asks you to play a game, I'm pretty sure they'd expect you to do your best right?
Nonetheless Grackma pwns.

Hi alffla, I enjoy badminton a lot too - just re-strung my Apacs Lethal 60 with BG65 string at 26lb. Can't wait to use it!
What racquet do you mainly use to play and what are the settings?
I enjoyed watching the Men's singles semi-finals and finals. Lee Chong Wei is so fun to watch. Gotta love his diving defensive saves, which he often turns into attack.

Whenever I play older people in basketball, I'm immediately cautious, because I assume that if they're playing with the youngsters, they've either got a wicket shot, play really dirty, or just have excellent game sense. Usually, it's some combination of the three. I'm sure it's similar for a lot of sports. (and yeah, Badminton is made of pure awesome, but it's really a different skillset compared to Tennis. Kind of like BW and SC2, I suppose)
|
"This old grandma". 60 is not really what I call an old grandma. Isnt that like standard age when you become a grandparent? Anyway, I hope I can be somewhat fit in that age and be better than my 15yo self in all of my sports.

Last time I played badminton with semi-competitiveness, I hurt my wrist. I'm scared to play badminton now. =[

badminton is actually very easy to play provided you know the tricks. there's actually tricks to increasing the force that you hit with, switching directions of the shuttlecock and receiving a smash.
beginner tip for hitting the shuttlecock(OP):-
keep twitching your wrist thats holding the racket. proceed to hit the shuttlecock. be amazed at the sheer increase of power you've managed to put into the shuttlecock. this twitching motion increases your wrist's power transmission to the shuttlecock. its a immediate difference. for other tips on badminton, tho im not a so-called pro player,im decent, feel free to PM me

People do funny shit all over this site. Think of this as quality control.
Don't sleep on old people in sports. I used to watch the racketball people at my old gym when I rode the bike. There was a 60+ year old dude who regularly would school younger dudes.

Being beaten by a 60 year old in badminton is nothing to be ashamed of (or special). Especially not when you have never played before.
I used to get beaten by my grandparents in tennis untill I was around 19. And they were 80 by then. And I was not bad at all. And just last week I was playing squash like I do every week and between games this old guy came over to give me some tips and pointers and my play really improved afterwards.
Just to show you never to underestimate an older person still actively participating in a sport.

I wish I could try out badmitton. Don't think it's played around here... I used to play in my backyard with my family when I was younger and that was fun. We had some cheap set though and a lot of the times if we hit it hard the birdie would get stuck in the racket t.t

I had a similar experience waiting at a bus stop. This guy comes up to me and asks me to play chess. He pulls out a used plastic mat with marking telling you which direction each piece moves. I knew he was mentally handicapped and assumed from the board that he had just learned to play, so I figured "why not, I'm not the best chess player in the world, but I can at least give him a good learning experience".
I have NEVER lost a game of chess so badly in my life! Handicapped or not, this guy was phenomenal! It took less than 15 minutes, I only took TWO of his pieces, and he proceeded to toy with me the last few turns by taking all my pieces except the king while loudly proclaiming how awesome he was.
I was pretty ashamed I had judged him off the bat, so instead of taking the bus I walked the three miles to my destination in shame!

I play regularly at the club in our city and there's a couple older guys that can still keep up with me, I play on the UW varsity team.
Although all these older guys are former provincial/national champions. Most of them at least.
And it's played more in Asia because for one it's the national sport of a couple countries, including China. Not to mention there are hundreds more clubs to play in there, in Canada there's maybe one club per city save a few areas like Toronto. In china there are courts to play on everywhere. They get the funding that hockey does here.

An image macro is a picture with superimposed text, often for humorous effect.
On Internet forums and imageboards, image macros are used to emphasize a certain phrase (often an Internet meme) by superimposing it over a related picture.

moral of the story? grow some balls and be a real man. The male youth in Korea has been so feminized by kpop culture, e.g. idol groups, and especially, boys over flowers, it's a crying shame. It's no wonder the grandma thought you were in elementary school.

so after i read this blog entry a few days ago I saw 무한도전 on tv and they had the korean badminton champion 이용대, and apparently his shuttlecock clocks in at a little over 300km/h (~186.4mph). They did a challenge for him where he would smash a shuttlecock at a watermelon and see if he could crack it. I was like no way that thing weighs like 5grams. Not only did he land it on his first try, which is damn impressive, the shuttlecock went straight into the watermelon and it cracked into pieces. I'll see if i can find a video but it was like the most impressive shit ever, and I wonder what it would do if you got hit by one
