Haha, I feel you. I'm a grad student too and coincidentally working on a 10 page paper as well (while getting results out). It's due in 14 hours and I don't intend to sleep until then even though I've already been up all night.

Do what you gotta do man, there's no way around it. Just enjoy after you're done

I have the same problem. My girlfriend is sleeping behind you.
But actually you'll hear me bitching soon about my final project for grad school.

You're a grad student too? For some reason I thought you were a high school physics teacher lol xD

I basically chose my field so I would never have to write an essay again.

What field are you in that you never have to write essays/papers/reports? I do machine learning/robotics/AI and most of my work is brainstorming/implementing methods, but when it comes time to actually publish or report those results I end up writing a lot. Sometimes it seems like I spend more time writing than actually thinking.

What kind of field doesn't require you to write a thesis at the end? Unless you're in a masters program with only classes, but even then, it's hard to imagine you don't have to write a single report the whole time
I wish I could say that it gets better.....but grad school is a test of willpower, perseverance, and liver capability. Good luck

The Computer Science program at my university gives you the option of writing a thesis or doing a thesis project (thesis project requires more hours though). In general, CS is one of those fields that tends to be very light on essays. Although some of that depends on the school you go to.

At least you have a girlfriend Im in grad school too and it was a major cause of me losing my last one. ><

Me too! That whole move 1000 miles away to do homework 50 hours a week was a real buzzkill....

oh fabulous, so instead of a thesis you have to write 50000 lines of code, I don't really see how that's any better lol At least if I have a typo my shit will still work ><

Because that would eliminate the point of having a thesis project option.

Some people (myself included) hate essays with a passion and find them very difficult to write, especially very long essays. I'm simply not a verbose person, so filling out those 100+ pages would be near impossible for me. I find writing code to be easier. Plus, it's not like all you do for the thesis is just write the paper itself.
Also, 50000 lines? I think you have an extra zero in there. No way in hell you're going to write 50000 lines of code in one semester with a full load of classes.
|
That one class will never go away. It makes the school too much money for them to take it away.
|
isn't grad school just supposed to be major grade inflation and a formality in terms of having to take classes? in the end only one thing matters, the thesis/thesis project LOL. at least that's how grad school is with the sciences.

just curious: when people talk about grad school, do they usually refer to masters programs, or PhD?
because, I didnt right that much during my masters. And now that I started my PhD, its all about getting published/preparing for presentations, etc..
|
My grad school right now is at the masters level. I think some people might specify if they were in a doctoral program but its just personal preference. When I go on to my PhD ill still say im a graduate student (until a certain point in the PhD program when you become a doctoral candidate).
As far as writing goes. It depends on what your program is geared for (terminal masters and/or going into an applied field vs going into academia). and also your subject field. As an Anthropologist at the masters level we write a lot.
