Slightly tongue-in-cheek title ;p
I think it's a relatively common problem but I find that when I get really stressed/nervous/anxious I get this ridiculously strong compulsion to bite something. Like it feels like the gum of my teeth get this dull, light pain that's alleviated only when pressure is applied to my teeth. I'm fairly sure it's not so bad that I grind my teeth, even when I'm asleep, but it's there. I also don't get stressed/nervous/anxious that often, but...
There're instances like when I have a presentation that I'll go two days or so wanting to just bite something, and I'm not sure what to do about it. I usually just start biting my fingers; I don't bite hard enough for it to actually be damaging (which is the major medical issue with this sort of compulsion, as far as I can tell?) but it's a constant, nagging presence.
So I'm wondering if anyone else (chances are, there are) has this issue and what they do to deal with it. In all seriousness I've more than once tried looking for a human chew toy but I only get dog ones, and I don't think chewing on a bone or squeaky toy is particularly reasonable when I'm sitting in class/a meeting :D I don't think chewing gum works because it's too thin; you end up just grinding your teeth with a very miniscule buffer.

I see it being recommended for grinders while they sleep a lot >_> Thinking about it T_T

My sister grinds and she needs a mouthpiece when she sleeps, but afaik she has been able to get by while awake with just gum. Give gum a try and see if it helps.

Maybe get one of those things boxers put in their mouth to protect their teeth.

Sleeping with gum in your mouth doesnt really sound safe.

A mouth guard that athletes use in football/boxing/hockey/etc sounds ideal for this.

Excellent reading comprehension there, buddy.

I sometimes get the same feeling but mine is more minor. I just bite the side of my cheek and it goes away. I won't have the sensation for maybe one or two months and I'll just bite again. You said you don't prefer gum because it's too thin, but have you put like, alot of gum in your mouth before? :p

Country Romania.
Give him a break, Ragewalrus.
on-topic, I had a similar issue but gum got me by. It eventually went away and now I have a new issue where I like....I can't describe it but if you try and pop your ears without pinching your nose, I do that instead. Just...kinda strange. *shrug*

Every time you get this feeling go out and buy a delicious steak (preferably rib eye) and eat the shit out of it.

these things you give to dogs might also be a very low cost alternative. they are like stupidly hard, but they soften up through getting wet when chewing around on them. x)

lolol
I used to have this, but it kinda went away idk I just chew gum a lot...like it's ridiculous how fast i go through a pack of gum.
I agree with most people here that say you should try out athlete's mouth guards. Information on this(known as bruxism i think) is readily available, just google it.

Also, if you do decide to go with gum, stick with gum that is good for your teeth.

Get really stiff chewing gum, like Dubble Bubble and chew like six pieces at once. I once blew a 3-4 inch diameter bubble with Dubble Bubble that was so stiff, I couldn't pop it. I finally poked a pencil into it, and it just created a pencil-diameter hole in it that stayed after I removed the pencil.

Well as long as this is a judgement free zone, I also like to chew stuff. Way back in day I read somewhere that chewing helps you focus and whether it actually does or I've simply made myself believe it does, idk. I recommend plastic, like the wrappers on the outside of peppermints. They ball up nicely and don't break apart so your aren't grinding your teeth or stuck with a bunch of crap in your mouth

I have a pretty bad oral fixation
i chew on bottle caps and grind my teeth constantly
i just try to chew a lot of gum to keep my mouth moving so I don't do anything harmful to my teeth, that's what i suggest. buy a lot of gum

The boxing mouthpeices are really cheap at sports stores/sections, when you buy them you can mold them perfectly to your teeth as well so its super comfortable to bite down on.

Yea but it looks ridiculous to walk around with a mouth guard, he needs something for the chewer on the go

I used to chew the caps on bottles off, you know, like on sports drinks that you slide up to drink. The plastic is not too hard to damage your mouth and not too soft to have no effect. Not exactly a long term solution though...

Hahah, I'll check out some stiff chewing gum as suggested :D Thanks all.

My doctor actually told me to get a mouthpiece because I grind my teeth. I fucking hated wearing that thing when I slept. Plus your jaw is still stiff after you wake up since instead of grinding on your teeth, you're biting on the mouthpiece.
But I found a pretty easy fix for not grinding your teeth while asleep w/out using mouthpiece. Call it a quick fix (well it worked for me). Just leave your jaw slack before you go to sleep. No need to open your mouth or anything, just don't have it closed or tensed in any manner before you sleep. This fixes the problem for me. (Basically found this out because I got drunk one night -> forgot to put my mouthpiece on -> woke up and my jaw didn't hurt. go figure)
I've done this for a year now, and I'm pretty confident it works because my jaw isn't stiff after I wake up (like before) and my dentist told me that I've been doing well using my mouthguard. :/
Edit: Just realized OP doesn't have grinding teeth problem, just likes to bite things like a dog. Chew on some gum, but be careful because your jaw muscles can actually get a little developed. Friend of mine chews gum hardcore and after 5 years you can actually see some muscle development when he bites down. Dunno if this is bad or anything, but he apparently thinks it's pretty bitchin.

I have that same issue and gum and mouthpieces just dont do it for me. There is a company called the sensory university, they make adult chew toys, some are even flavored. It may sound odd to some but there really is nothing that compares to an actual chew toy and i'm tired of denying it. For your problem with taking them into your meeting or class they make some that go on the end of your pen or pencil. Ark Therapeutic are also supposed to make some good ones.
