Well, first of all, it's not like the people in the ring (or octagon) don't know what they're doing there, it's not like they get in there and go ''wtf??!! some guy is trying to kick my ass??!!''. It's a bit like saying sex is bad because sometimes people get raped, it's a matter of context. The 'when they're already down'-argument is a bit of a fallacy, because in MMA you have something called the ''ground game'' which is essentially techniques based on fighting while on your back or being on top of someone on the ground, it's mostly a mix between wrestling, judo and brazilian jiu-jitsu. What this means is that many fights are actually won by the guy being on his back through submissions and sometimes even striking such as elbows, it's not necessarily a bad position to be in. MMA often look more brutal compared to other contact sports such as boxing, but looking at the actual damage taken by fighters in a fight, boxing is often a lot worse (see the recent Pacquiao vs Margarito fight). Ultimately it comes down to subjective ideas though, if you are just in general against violence you will probably never be a MMA-fan, but if you actually take the time to learn a bit about the techniques and the skill behind what's going on you might see it in a different way. | ||

For the people who just fight to be dirtbags, jumping people and beating them unconscious because they can't control their emotions in a civilized manner, they bring a terrible name to the skilled aspect of fighting. If any of those random bastards were to step into the ring with someone they would be destroyed. There are people who love fighting, like myself. I've hit 2 people in my life without equipment on, and they both deserved it. I've never started a fight over something petty, nor have I attacked a random person. If someone asked me to fight them in the ring, you're god damn right I'd do it. It would be more fun and excitement then my body could handle. If others who like to fight take it in a professional manner then fighting isn't so scary. Fighting is scary when you don't want to fight. I can't wait for this fight. It's ACTUALLY the biggest fight in HW history. This fight is huge, and I've been waiting for it to happen for 2 years or so. I'll be ordering this one baby. :D | ||

I'm sure there is some portion of the population that is only interested in seeing people get fucked up. However, it is terribly ignorant for you to believe that this is the only reason people watch MMA. You only think it is animal because you do not understand what is going on. It's like when a complete newbie watches a starcraft game. To them it looks like a senseless game where you throw units at each other endlessly. They do not know what micro or macro is. They have no concept of the underlying strategy of the game. In the exact same way, you are also missing the underlying strategy and skill of MMA. Mixed martial arts is a very complex sport. There is an immense skill aspect to it, which makes it very fascinating to watch from a technical point of view. Jiu Jitsu is often called physical chess because it is a game of strategy. Obviously, there is a physical damage component to it. However, this is true with many sports. These people are athletes, and they accept the risks that are associated with their sports. Also, the danger is very largely mitigated by the rules of the sport. | ||

Look, I dont know what to tell you, I felt EXACLY like you like 1 year ago. My friends compete in MMA and always loved the scene, eventually they got jobs and started buying all PPVs, I started watching, talking about it, following some brazilian fighters, learning MMA myself, and its inevitable to start liking it. Once you get over the hemophobia the sport causes, you will be able to see it just like a SC match, a competition between the skill of 2 great athlethes. here watch this video of Lyoto. | ||

The appeal is that it's not two big dumb brutes swinging at one another, it's that they're top class martial artists + athletes who train really hard. If you're interested in martial arts and/or still have that primal spark that exists in males that just makes you want to fight/hunt/generally be angry then you get a kick out of watching MMA. If you're not really a fighting guy it wouldn't appeal to you and you may not understand the appeal. Simple as that. | ||

Junior Dos Santos remains for the most part a wild card due to his untested ground game, but unless Cain chooses to attack his strength (striking) I see no advantage Junior can make for himself. | ||
