warning: this will get weird.
I miss chat channels, you miss chat channels. Let's get all misty-eyed and nostalgic about it. Ready? Ok, go!
for most of its existence, -x17 was full of self-important blowhards. you went there for a game and some bm in every sense. it was very popular. i did not enjoy it for more than 5 minutes at a time and i bet most of you will say the same thing. in that way, it reminds me of germany in the late 40's. most of the old x17ers act as though they had no hand in the crimes against humanity taking place daily. repent! repent! we were all stupid when we were young, i was just stupid elsewhere.
nh was swell. ~nohunters was where you went if you wanted to have an angry, homosexual orgy in the form of a ffa. also, bizarrely good players lived (live) there for years. NH was and is more my style. it's probably the community i've been around the longest and, for those ex-nhers wondering, it is still a bastion of fluid sexuality and inexplicable hostility. it's fairly awesome.
someone needs to get in the habit of writing up awesome battlereports again. where is breeze? he was my favorite bulgarian. all the old legends are now wrinkled husks of their former selves (translation: they almost all play sc2 but have produced no battlereports). mark4 asked me for a spongebath last week because he cannot reach his dirty inner knees. i obliged.
what else? tot's channel was fun but i almost never idled it. us west was a misnomer as it was actually korea. i remember lazy weekend afternoons reading sclegacy's channel listings and cycling through them on bnet. wgt, that was a grand ol time and surprisingly mannered, too!
i'm not going to lie, this post may have been a thinly veiled attempt to connect with old nhers. maybe i will remember my decade-old smurfs when i see old names..
but what else was there? refresh my memory! cf? was that a thing? i am old and have a terribly foggy recollection of this past decade. tell me the story of your favorite (or least favorite) bnet1 channel.
god, i miss chat channels.
the ever growing list of channels i've been reminded of: rekrul's west channel. team aerola motel ..!

|
Anybody remember rekrul's channel back in USWest? 2003ish.. I used to hang out there all the time until he got that bot that autobanned everybody that joined.
Good times. I never heard of nohunters though, sorry
|
It was all about Ladder Challenges baby!
|
i do remember that (rek's channel), cant believe it slipped my mind! it was huge, especially within the tl scene as i recall. in my memory, it was the source of much drama and, to a lesser extent, good games, always the calling card of a good channel. but as i've established, my memory is fuzzy.
|
USWest Original SC Channel 55 back in the day when it was bgh that's the first community i hopped into when i started playing on bnet. then i hopped onto bw in 03 and was in marlboro ever since... sc2 has been out .... with NO CHAT CHANNELS
|
marlboro! that sounds familiar, i swear. also, there was a hotel channel .. was it a bgh hotspot? so many vague names floating in my head. hm.

channel dok @ useast is where I would be at least 20 hours a week for old school maps. All non-pro maps, all blizz maps, in all varieties, with 3v3, 2v2, ffa, race wars... was simply the best. Many of them downloaded the blizzard map releases so we had non-stop blizzard map goodness. It was crazy how even after I started playing competitive maps, I would always lose to them on these BW maps. Crazy shit. Hidden Shrine, Tropical Seas, Killing Fields, Tribes, Garden of Aiur, Wheel... Most epic matches you've ever seen. two 200/200 protoss armies vs two 200/200 terran armies on Killing fields? Yes please. I want my childhood back.

Wasn't it motel?
I stuck to cf for the most part

i agree with the wistful sentiment expressed in this post.

maybe. again, terrible memory. what sort of channel was it?

anyone remember "brood war kor-namomo" or "brood war kor-nexus"?
|
Can you tell me roughly what year "brood war kor-namomo" was established in? For a period of time I was naming some of my Diablo 2 characters Kor-Namomo, but I couldn't remember the exact reason till now, lol. I don't think I've ever been in that channel either.

i remember those two channels vaguely - mostly nexus.

channel marlboro on uswest... still active.
also growroom and op hyo-

the other great thing about dok was that it was full of true old-school gamers like the ones nipping at the heels of top players in 99 and 00, were all in a tool-fan group with Maynard so their names were like MJK, To0l, AEnemic, etc. and they were all 100 apm gosus. One of them never used hotkeys... EVER. And he had perfect macro. The timings were wired in his brain. he was sabertoothgrrr on USEast. BTW all these players were vanilla players up till like 20005/2006 so that's why it is probably a different flavor than what most of you saw, but damn was I hooked on vanilla because of those assholes. Delayed my BW development by years.
EDIT: Murphius@USEast will rape anyone at micro tourney to this day, guaranteed. He played protoss and worked with 12-man armies all over the map simultaneously, raping like 3 of your expos with some crazy reaver goon ht archon sair mix.
|
clan pros had a pretty large community, basically all the people of "motel" kinda..

I remember that channel and kor-nexus. I never idled in them much, though. I wanna say that was around 2005/6? They could have been around earlier

my college roommate was a vanilla freak up until about a year ago. it was very bizarre to see but it's sort of cool - seems like a tight knit community on vanilla.

ahahahha i remember motel and x17. so much fun.
|
i always joined x17 as soon as i entered bnet there was so much idiocy and bm tma games it was a place to just laugh your ass off at
off the top of my head, i remember 40yrsoldvirgin, scy, abbas, and pink but god those kids were DUMB rofl

Even weirder than the vanilla sc community is the sc demo version community. There was a thread on it awhile ago. You can only play Terran and there was like one map.

1v1 channel with pretty good players. A few TLers had accounts there. Lordofdabu, Grandinquisitor (near the end), syst, tien, grass, aegis, coldlava, bill307, ThisIsJimmy (went by silentassassin), etc. And a bunch more who don't have TL accounts.

How does a vanilla tvz work? tank gol vessel mines is pretty good probably better than in broodwar. biomech only works thanks to tanks, tanks and marines pretty much. the lack of lurkers actually balances it out to make T still favored.
EDIT: Also BC's are baller as hell without devourers to take them down. Plague and swarm only way to win.

I used to FFA with people from nohunters often. That was good fun.
|
Wait wait wait, Murder. Who are you? I played in dok, and I played with both Murphius and sabertoothgrrr... And KHAINSAW and iamoses and god knows who else.
I can't remember the old Bloodbath only channels on USEast either, but dok played quite a bit of bb and so I hung around there for a while.
Did Bhaalzhebub play out of dok? How about SIMPL?

Before Motel, there were channels like D, C, Clan [n], Wizz, inte. Also, there was a temporary x17 offshoot called clan ~gosu where a bunch of good players went to pretend they were above x17 until they started to miss the drama too much lol :O

Ahhh, the good ole days, winter break from highschool. Wake up, eat a warm breakfast made by mommy, then go hole myself up in computer room in sweatshirt sweatpants and socks because the windows kinda let in the cold, then I'd sit there banning and 2v2'ing my heart out all day in clan rekrul.

It's nice to think back about this stuff. I missed out on SC, but I remember a lot of old Warcraft 3 channels (including a nohunters one).

Motel is still very much alive. But because it was at one time constantly being attacked by flood bots, it was renamed to )v(
But community is still pretty much the same, and there are like ~4000 hits per day on that channel, with ~350 being unique.
|
I used to hang out in nohunters and on br.com, but I was 14 and immature at the time. Looking back at my old posts and such is actually kind of embarrassing.
|
everyone couple of years i go and read the br.com thread where eri proved that testie was hacking. it's fun to see everyone so young and angry and full of creative insults.
|
I always enjoyed X17 and still visit from time to time although it's usually pretty much dead. I was one of the anti-BM'ers, as in I BM'd the BM people and challenged them to games and raped them, highly entertaining.
I remember no hunters and then nolost temple was the replacement for that lol.

Did Bhaalzhebub play out of dok? How about SIMPL? Oh pffffft I was in the ABBA part of dok so maybe we haven't talked much because of that xD (anti-blood bath association).
Haha omg KHAINZAW was such a chill guy and iamoses was funny for getting so angry at shit xD easy-to-kill/hard-to-kill, dostoevsky, wizz0rd (was a douche lol), BattleMech (easily the best competitive player to come out of dok), CeciltheDark, Geo, Captain Farva (lol)... So many people I don't think I'll ever see again ): I want to load a bot to dok and see who still shows up.
Oh boy, I had a lot of names, and half the time I was pretending to be someone else, because I was young and stupid at the time haha. I had the following names in this order from like 2000/2001ish - Caspela, sturm_fury, BNU-Silence, Caspela, MyJuly, Ilovekittens, BNU-Silence[EK]... What was yours? Did I mention you already? xD

I remember the channel scbackstab, we all used to go into 7v1 comp stomp with name spoofers and end up backstabbing each other. Good times were had except for the poor chumps who were trying to get a free win. Get back into the channel and find out who was who.

We'd win the trial game and join their clan, before backstabing comp stomps while advertising their clan channels then getting booted out as quickly as we joined. what i wouldn't give to be able to do this again.

Thanks for writing this ChoboPeon! Motel was a favorite of mine for a long time. X17 was the gift and the curse. If you were trying to get better on USEast it was hard to get a regular game against someone good elsewhere. I always remember MarshallFaulk sitting in wait ready to bash just about anyone's brains in.
Op confed was a seedy underground you might remember. They had a competitive team Keepers whose leader paid his players to cheat in the leagues with maphacks(proven) to attain greater results. Some of those players have now become the best NA SC2 players. :O

I liked clan sphere. They were always nice. And really good at the game too!
|
Sphere was great, OD, gitm, aD, iP, lots of cools teams with solid communities that lasted for many many years. *snif
I wrote news for Starcraftgamers and was there when we decided to go with GosuGamers. I'm so glad we still have this great community to be nostalgic together.
P.S. Where is Physician / Entropy these days? He CARRIED our community for so long with his amazing enthusiasm and wisdom.
