I'm a 1300 diamond terran in the top 500 according to sc2ranks. At least I was. Up to 1300 I was staying steady at a 2:1 win/loss ratio, but ever since I hit 1300 I've been losing game after game, and I think I'm 2-7 in my last 9. And I'm not just losing to the 1350+ they send at me, but even 1150 players are kicking my ass.
I've decided to take a break for a couple days while I watch day9's and other VODs to gain more strategic sense or something.
But seriously I've forgotten how to win. I almost never cheese so I think my mechanics have gotten me this far, but now it's just so hard.
In TvZ if my initial hellion/marauder rush doesn't do any damage (and it's been getting stopped pretty often now) get destroyed by mutas keeping me in my base til the zerg gets 3 base ultras.
In TvP I do iEchoic's hellion drop build, but the protoss scouts me going fact first and hits me with as many stalkers as i have marines..
In TvT I was always a fan of tank/viking play but now i seem to lose sooooo many scv's to drops.
I know I just need to adapt to these new styles, but especially mutas are so hard to kill. T_T my hopes and dreams of making the top 200 list are shattered. The remaining 300 to beat are just too damn good.

I hit 1300 the other day. Took a few days off and went 1-9 when I logged on last night. Talk about tilting.

I'm not actually good enough to play at that level but might it be that people are starting to adapt to those types of strategies ?
|
I know how you feel, I started playing a bit less to start studying a bit more and today for example, I reacted to a simple two base mass Rauder play with mass STALKERS and HTs. I completely forgot about Chargelots. Same thing happens with Tank/Marine, I went Stalkers AGAIN, I don't even.. Speedlings kept destroying me as well, which was the first thing I learnt how to stop. I lost about 200 points and I'm pretty sure I'm barely on the top 200 list (for SEA) anymore, whereas I used to be #30. Damn nature of the game, having to play constantly to keep up.

I know lots of people who can be rollercostery like that. It can be hard to get out of slumps, but its important to not worry about points too much.
If you worry about points a lot you can be working against your self and get tilty playing games.
Remember that because of the large amount of inflation its almost impossible to keep up if you're not playing constantly.
I used to be like top 100 in the top 200, but now i may not even make it

try doing a 1 / 1 / 2 build w/ marauders instead of pure marine. it lets you take map control and set up an early push then you can either continue with a hellion drop or save gas for banshee tech.
personally i like pushing in w/ 3 marauders and a marine and either proxy factoring into their base or running hellions up the ramp while i bunker near the front. then follow up w/ a raven / banshee

hellion/marauder is basically an all in build. Just go hellion expand get some marines/marauders/2 thors/some tanks and make sure you siege before you get hit by banelings GG.
If he tries to counter with muta just wait for the thor to come out and repair it with scvs and kill him before hive tech ezpz.

No offense but you got that high knowing only 3 strategies?..
Learn the game more and you win more. Can't say much else. No offense i hope.

You realize learning 3 solid build orders is the best way to improve?

Lol. Really?
Please enlighten me on the well thought out reasoning that allows you to confidently conclude that that is the BEST way to improve. Or even a good way.
You should head over to the strategy forums and tell all the toss players to just 4 gate to 1000+ diamond.

Learning one solid strategy for each matchup is perfect for newer players, there is no arguing that. I don't see what you contribute to this post, other then being a downer/troll.
If you can refine 3 build and adapt them when you need to then that's awesome, you have 3 solid builds that you know how to transition out of, one for each matchup. What's wrong with that?
And sadly a decent toss player could 4 gate every game and make 1k points pretty easily.

You can get to 1300 diamond with 1 strategy - 4 warpgate.
The best way to improve your mid/late game is 3 SOLID build orders. Marader/hellion isn't solid. It's borderline all in. Hellion drop isn't solid, it relies on suprise. TvT seems a bit too rock/paper/scissors ish so w/e you do you can't win them all. This is because if you have a lot of build orders you will tend to lose more early game and get into different midgame situations so its harder to learn. Having 1 linear path to start off is a good way to break into the midgame and then branch out.
Best way to improve your early game is to play around with lots of BO's and learn the strengths/weaknesses so you understand it more and can even make your own builds.

As a Zerg player, I could argue that I really only have one build order, and its gotten me to 1300+.
14 gas, 14 pool, expo around 21, then deviate based on what I scout...
I do that in every game and in every matchup...

I don't agree: Trump uses Marauder/Hellion in almost every game he plays, and he's still roughly #55 in NA. Also up to like 1100 I would open with tanks because that's what worked. Ever since Mutas became the in thing, I've been trying other builds to see what works, and the marauder hellion one did.
Also the hellion drop doesn't rely on surprise. Surprise just makes it a borderline instant win. The problem isn't my hellions getting scouted, it's the fact that their fast expand is a bigger advantage for the toss than the 2-10 probes he's going to lose.

I know how you feel man. I hit 1200 finally and then bam 5-18 over 2 days . . . Im on break right now watching Day[9] and thinking on my builds and how to improve them . . .

Why not? With enough repetition you understand what your enemy can hit you with at a particular time in the build. That means understanding the weakness and strength of a build which is definitely a way to improve no? Nobody should tell anyone that mastering every build must be done immediately.
