Summer 2007 was the summer before my freshman year in college. It was also the summer when SC2 was announced. Like most other TL ers, I jizzed my pants upon hearing the announcement and had been eagerly anticipating the release since then. Being a die hard WC3 player since the release of RoC in 2002, I knew there would only be one game that can take me away from that wonderful game, and that game is SC2.

Back home for an internship and being far away from most of my friends this summer, SC2 was basically the only thing I did during my free time. Even at work, I sneakily read up some TL and watch livestreams (hopefully none of my coworkers/bosses are reading this =) When the game finally released and my love for the game just grew. Playing through the campaign was incredible and so was playing in weekly tournaments and team leagues. I wanted to have fun but remain semi competitive, which would require me to play a lot.

This brings me back to my fall semester of 2010. I just started my senior year at Texas A&M (Whoop!)and had recently just moved back to my house in college. Since a few of my closest friends in college plays SC2, I thought all we would do is play a shit ton of SC2, especially the before school started. But with all my friends coming back (a relatively large group of friends), it just became so hard to care about SC2 when there’s so much other fun shit to be doing. Partying, playing pickup soccer, board games, and just hanging out with my friends during the past few weeks were some of the most fun I’d had in my life.

And it is only now, in my 4th year of college that I truly realize how important my friends are to me. Starcraft 2 will always be there, but many of your friends wont be. Once I graduate from college and move on with my life, I will not see a majority of my college friends again. And with two short semesters left in college, I realized how much I should treasure this year. My college years have been the best years of my life and I find it harder personally to dedicate so much of my time trying to get better at a video game with no bearing on my life.

I still love SC2 and will continue to play it on a constant basis (yaa CSL!) but nothing beats spending time with friends and family, especially when away from the computer. Most of them won’t be there when the 8-5 workday rapes you in the ass.

TLDR: Fucking enjoy college while you can before real life rapes you in the ass. Starcraft 2 is always secondary (for most people).

This is my 1000th post and I would like to thank TL for these 3 amazing years. This website will always be #1 in my heart!

When I went to college I was playing WoW. I quit before the end of the first semester.
There just wasn't time to play WoW while living in rez so I know exactly how you feel.

My only regret is not selling my character on ebay.

I envy you. I realized how important my friends are to me way too late, I've had been WoW addict since it's release and it consumed most of my college life. I regret it greatly, and if I could go back in time, I wouldn't play WoW.

SC2 is a casual game though, it's not as engaging as WoW. At least you can use SC2 to socialize with your SC2 friends just like you play cards or soccer together.

That's why I picked SC2 as "my game" since beta started, and it's going great for me so far!

And grats on 1k posts!

my life didnt stop for jobs in the summer(40 hour weeks min, usually 50+), amazingly i still had loads of time to hang out with friends and play games. Though to be fair this schedule did almost entirely cut out sleep!

Oh goodness me, FOX tv where do you get your sight? Can't you keep track, the puck is black. That's why the ice is white.

Starcraft is what I do with my friends most of the time. It's brought me into the gaming community and starcraft community here at college, but also given me a passion that I share with many people across the world.

Friends should share your interests. If you have to avoid doing things you like to hang around your friends, something is amiss. Now there is a point of obsession where you don't really do anything else, but to be honest that doesn't mean it's a bad obsession. Just be honest to yourself - do you really like starcraft for the community, the culture, and the game, or just as a way to entertain yourself?

You're absolutely right about friends sharing the same interests. Me and my friends share numerous interests, that's why we became friends in the first place. And about the SC question, I have a passion SC for the community and for the game, not just something I just play to pass time. I guess I didn't express myself too well, but what I'm trying to say is that if I have to make a choice between SC and doing something non SC related with my buddies, I would rather do the latter most of the time.

If you manage your time correctly you can drink it away while using it.
