So I was home for 2.5 weeks back in California, we have high speed internet at home and it's never really been an issue, but I just felt like going on www.speedtest.net for fun while I was home and seeing how it was. I ran like maybe 8 mb/s download and 4 mb/s upload.

Back in school now.

I was pretty excited to see those numbers once again :D

It's like Korea fast lol. So how is everyones internet going where they are? University or not, all comers welcome.

Oh man.... just one more reason to add to want to live on campus (super fast University internet).

BTW, you should fix your link, it should be www.speedtest.net

Here's mine (pathetic NA internets!!!!! Why can't North America have uber fiber optic internet widely available like in Korea and the Nordic countries???)

okie dokie.

I have good internet at home which is really nice. Internet at work sucks though, and goes through a filter. I am looking at getting a mobile wifi pod that taps into the 3g network. It gives you 7.2 Mb down and about 5.2 Mb up, so I need to test it out at work to see if it is ok.

You can upgrade to High Speed Extreme, I think its only 10$ more to upgrade. You instead have 15mb/s download and around 1mb upload. Then the High Speed Warp is like 70$ extra, and its 25mb/s download 2mb upload... makes me cringe how overpriced the internet providers are so stingy.

No, that's what pings are supposed to be like to close locations. Unfortunately most people are on cable and DSL where the modulation and error coding adds significant latency. Once you get fiber it's hard to go back.

That's the only reason I don't feel worse about North American internet. Australian internet is just terrible. Overpriced... slow... and a fucking CAP on bandwith.

yeah it sucks pretty bad. I don't think we'll ever have unlimited internet, the closes we'll get it the 1 terabyte plans that are coming out soon (probably going to be very expensive...)

Must be a good day.

You know what else sucks? Pity from people in other countries when they think about Australian internet lol I swear people look at our (Australian) plans and have a good hearty laugh.

George Washington University, in Washington, DC. I don't hide it since I've made it public on TL before.

Yeah, please, for you Australians, save yourself your limited bandwidth, I feel sorry for you guys just thinking about it.

Well, whenever I'm on a new york or DC ventrilo server I usually get 0-4 ping. On some of my speedtest runs its like 2 ping. I live in the middle of the business district of washington DC so I''m fairly certain the server location has to be within like 2-3 miles. So its close to lan speed lol

America is way behind in optimal connections, damn corporations and clueless consumers. I use Optimum Online since thats the only cable available here(Brooklyn, NYC), the other alternative is Verizon Fios(Legit Fiber, not cable)

Optimum is terrible, they dont seem to acknowledge that their damn lines arent able to support the amount of users in an area. Only solution is getting node split, but that seems to be only a temporary solution. My area is way too saturated with users, I havent gotten my full 15/2 for months. This is all due to the terrible government's plan to provide better service and have dedicated ISPs assign to each borough. At peak hours my latency is abysmal, wish I could swap for Fios sooner.

DAMN YOU AMERICA!

UCLA's should be fast. Are you using wireless or ethernet plugged in etc. stuff. When I use my wireless its much slower for obvious reasons.

How common is it for universities to block p2p traffic these days? I know that you can get phenomenal speeds, but that's somewhat useless if you can't download VODs over p2p

While we're talking about net speeds, can someone explain to me why in reality I never actually get anywhere close to those types of speeds in downloads? Speedtest says I get about 9mb/s, but the best download speed i've ever got is 1.2mb/s, most of the time it's anything from 300-700kb/s. That's a pretty massive disparity no?

It's overrated. Most have absurd throttling policies that'll get you cut to dial-up speeds for legitimate use.

Ionno, my school tracks how much bandwidth is uploaded but not downloaded, but if you have excessive upload limits they give you like 3 warnings before they take your computer in and reformat it without backing up anything.

It's very common for US colleges to block p2p and monitor bandwidth. You can get into pretty serious trouble with the school for overdoing it.

It depends entirely on the university. Some universities take a very hands off approach and don't do any policing unless it interferes with the network. Others track bandwidth, some cap speeds, and some block p2p protocols. It varies a ton among universities.

Mb =/= MB

or

1 Megabit = 0.125 Megabyte

so

9.44 Mb = 1.18 Megabyte download (pretty much what you said, 1.2 MB/s)

9.44 Mb = 1.18 Megabyte download (pretty much what you said, 1.2 MB/s)

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong please ^_^

Oh really? Wow that explains a lot. Thanks!

Nope, you're right. I thought I getting ripped when I downloaded at 300kbps when my "speed" said 2400. Then I was like... Oh.

that's too costly in the US atleast for me but idm too much 20 bucks a month for 6016 kb/s down and 768 kb/s up on dsl that i've never had down time or throttling issues atleast where i live it's pretty good.

We're still using old copper wires from the late 90s. Probably go through 10 generations before they will switch to legit fiber.

edit: Alright Im exaggerating on the time, but you get it. American ISPs are terrible, unless you want to fork over $100+ a month just for a dedicated line.

We just got 500-1000 MBit fiber set up in our apartments. It's 100€ a month though, so fuck that. I've been on 100/10 fiber for a couple of years now, I hope I never have to go back to adsl.

This is my home internet. My local electric company laid down fiber lines a few years ago for the entire city. So now they're an Cable/ISP too. They only offer a 10/10 connection, at $25 a month. But a while back my connection jumped up to this. Didn't have to pay more for it either

Woah these speeds are rediculous. I have to pay an extra $140 or something like that to UPGRADE to 5.0 Mbps wired.

Without the upgrade, I get like 350 kbps wired in my dorm.

Wow you guys gotta be kidding me. Those speeds are... mind blowing. Literally mind blowing.

If I get my supposedly 10meg connection to go at 4 - 8meg, then I am having one fine day. Upload? Yeah, that's capped at 1meg.

UK internet sucks mega-balls, think yourself lucky NA :\ even if your speed do suck compared to developed parts of asia and some of europe.

Speeds at university highly depend on how many other people are around you, the time of day, etc.

Sometimes certain access points are overloaded and the wireless in that region is slower/impossible to access (happens here at the library a lot)

So some of these numbers are probably a bit low, and some others may be a bit higher than average, depending on what time of day and where you were on campus.

I know here at Berkeley the slowest speeds are in the libraries (at like 25 Mb/s down and 2 Mb/s up) but the fastest speeds are in individual buildings, particularly at odd times of day. Obviously at night the speeds are fastest.

Typically something like 15-20 down 3-4 up (at home). Problem is, comcast crashes every couple months or so, and every so often it'll randomly slow down to like 2-3 download for no reason and then spike back up.

Also, fun fact: Many UK universities don't allow the internet in their halls of residence to be used for gaming. You can download porn as much as you want, but Starcraft is not allowed.

I saw R1CH post here, and he didn't mention this, so I may be totally wrong, but...

From my understanding, all these university speed tests are meaningless. If under "ISP:" it says "blablabla university blablabal", it means that your uni network is on its own autonomous system. Which means that it's most likely connected to an internet exchange point and has free, unlimited peering to local ISPs, hence these astronomic speed.

If you really want to check your uni's connection (how much they are willing to spend on international transit), connect to a server on another continent (try EU -> NYC or NA -> London, these cities are well connected).

Compare
Warsaw:
NYC:

I have better dl to nyc from my home...

Don't mean to bump an entirely old thread but I'm back in school, and am on my work computer today and decided, I wonder how fast it can run here lol. I work in the computer labs at an engineering school building and right now there aren't any classes going so it shouldn't be too bogged down by anything. I figured it would match my OP of maybe 100 down and 50 up at best, then I ran this

Heres the connection to London, for the post above mine

And to Korea, since this is TL after all
