I have good internet at home which is really nice. Internet at work sucks though, and goes through a filter. I am looking at getting a mobile wifi pod that taps into the 3g network. It gives you 7.2 Mb down and about 5.2 Mb up, so I need to test it out at work to see if it is ok.

Optimum is terrible, they dont seem to acknowledge that their damn lines arent able to support the amount of users in an area. Only solution is getting node split, but that seems to be only a temporary solution. My area is way too saturated with users, I havent gotten my full 15/2 for months. This is all due to the terrible government's plan to provide better service and have dedicated ISPs assign to each borough. At peak hours my latency is abysmal, wish I could swap for Fios sooner. Anyway, on to mine: I thought that was pretty good too, my world has been turned upside down While we're talking about net speeds, can someone explain to me why in reality I never actually get anywhere close to those types of speeds in downloads? Speedtest says I get about 9mb/s, but the best download speed i've ever got is 1.2mb/s, most of the time it's anything from 300-700kb/s. That's a pretty massive disparity no?

Others track bandwidth, some cap speeds, and some block p2p protocols. It varies a ton among universities.

This is my home internet. My local electric company laid down fiber lines a few years ago for the entire city. So now they're an Cable/ISP too. They only offer a 10/10 connection, at $25 a month. But a while back my connection jumped up to this. Didn't have to pay more for it either

Sometimes certain access points are overloaded and the wireless in that region is slower/impossible to access (happens here at the library a lot) So some of these numbers are probably a bit low, and some others may be a bit higher than average, depending on what time of day and where you were on campus. I know here at Berkeley the slowest speeds are in the libraries (at like 25 Mb/s down and 2 Mb/s up) but the fastest speeds are in individual buildings, particularly at odd times of day. Obviously at night the speeds are fastest.

From my understanding, all these university speed tests are meaningless. If under "ISP:" it says "blablabla university blablabal", it means that your uni network is on its own autonomous system. Which means that it's most likely connected to an internet exchange point and has free, unlimited peering to local ISPs, hence these astronomic speed. If you really want to check your uni's connection (how much they are willing to spend on international transit), connect to a server on another continent (try EU -> NYC or NA -> London, these cities are well connected). Compare Warsaw: NYC: I have better dl to nyc from my home...
