Now that we got that out of the way, let's continue. I arrived at the Raleigh convention center at 3pm Friday. Most everyone else was already there. MLG Raleigh is the first real convention that I've been to, and needless to say the first gaming convention. Holy shit there were a lot of computers, and a lot of people. The Halo section looked particularly crowded, though it seemed almost as though there were more players than spectators... but playing is always the best part!
Round 1 I get to play Suggy. Fuck my PvP is bad. Like really bad. I prayed to the Starcraft gods for a terran or a zerg, but I was denied for my infidelity It didn't go well. :/
Curiously, as we finish up and gather our equipment, I notice that Silver, who is next to me, has a somewhat worried looking face. Suggy asks him what's up, and holy shit Silver is at 1-1 in round 1 wtf? Oh look, it's my roommate playing him. Fuck yea PvT! By now most of you have probably seen that game (ElParamedico vs Silver). Too bad he got kind of nervous and failed on mechanics as a result (1300 minerals, lack of probe production, etc) . If only his mechanics were up to par, even to his normal par, he definitely would have won game 3 and the series. Knocking out Silver round 1? Totally win wouldn't you agree? He realized after the game that he went the wrong tech, but damn, nerves unconsciously creep into your game if you haven't played at LANs like MLG before. More on that later.
Luckily I didn't get streamed playing my shitastic PvP matchup. However, my other roommate was not so lucky. Oresama is his name! Also known as the zerg who got stomped into the ground by SeleCT. I think I will spare him any description of the 700 minerals before 20 supply rofl reapers and "I am Select and I got screwed by the person before me using grid and causing me to build a reactor instead of tech lab but oh well I will roll this zerg anyways". Hmm.... oops guess I described it -_-;;.
Oh, about nerves. Goddamit I fucked up so hard against TT1. Got supplied at 18 like a retard and in the midst of microing probes at one point never put them back on minerals in our first game. FUUUUUU. And then I forgot to check on the rocks in time in the second game, probe getting there just as rocks went down. Should've put a pylon there earlier... fml. Sigh. Oh, and I rallied my nexus to his main somehow and sent 3 extra probes over there early game. FUUUU nerves. I totally caught TT1's first 3 zealots and 1 stalker with their pants down though :D :D. I played so terribly it was just sad But TT1 is a cool guy, and so is Suggy. I won't fuck up so bad at D.C. though! Promise!
Did I ever mention that Hotpockets/Dr pepper is unexpectedly good? I munched away at free hot pockets and dr pepper all night
I should mention some things about the other, more well known players there. Gretorp is hilarious and certainly bipolar, with mid-game being the super serious mode and not-ingame being the clown mode. He also has some funny tendencies, wherein he nods his head every time he scans someone. I suppose he is thinking "oh yea you're doing exactly what I thought, get ready for this terran POLE." Occasionally, the POLE gets reversed. For example, at one point in his game vs everytime, Gretorp rallied his command center to his opponent's main, wherein an audible "What the fuck is this shit" emanated from Malaysian Terran #1.
Also, PainUser going on tilt from getting 9rax marauder'd -> cut all scv production and then helion dropped was kind of amusing, though it was sad too because PainUser was in pained mode.
Then there was the sick game between TT1 and Lastshadow were Lastshadow managed to snipe TT1's last pylon despite having a vastly inferior army. Poor TT1 I actually have that replay, but you out of the loop people will just have to wait for MLG to upload the VOD! Can't be denying them ad revenue
Speaking of ad revenue, I just starting drinking Dr Pepper. Somehow it tastes better than before after MLG weekend... I have been rewired!
I'm not sure if Day[9] was drunk towards the end of the dinner after MLG or not. It seemed like he was kind of tipsy, though I didn't recall seeing any alcohol near him. Maybe he just gets tipsy while extolling the virtues of colossus rush PvP. I don't know if the Kiwikaki 4 warpgate challenge was taken up though, as I wasn't there on Sunday. That showmatch should definitely happen though!
ThisIsJimmy is pretty cool too, apparently he works as a coder for medical stuff. Apparently he'd played just about everyone at MLG before on the ladder multiple times, though I think it was SeleCT that he'd only played once. Too bad he can only play after he gets off work, so keeping up might be hard :/
Last random story. One of my friends (StarN on TL) randomly noticed HuK in a corner or something and thought he looked sad. At this point he didn't know that guy was HuK. So, he offered to take him out to lunch, which they did. Along the way he found out it was HuK, and also that they were lost. So HuK wondered if Kiwikaki had paid StarN to get him lost and DQ'd lol. Ahh, fun weekend.
You guys better go to MLG D.C. !
