Back in July I made a blog post about getting owned in the workplace. TLDR was I got fired from my previous job because I just didn't give a fuck about a menial future less job and couldn't decide what I wanted to do with my life. Just recently I fell face first into a construction job which is physically demanding but overall is pretty amazing for me. I find it odd how hard it was to figure anything out and yet in the space of 3 days of work I've figured out a basic plan for the foreseeable future.
Now the singular thing that depresses me is how bad I get owned at SC2 hahahaha. But just like the job I'm beginning to realize that it was and always is just a state of mind and the effort required to achieve our goals. Thanks again to all the legit posters in the previous thread. If anyone has any questions about trade school's as well as Unions and what they might be able to offer you please feel free to ask. I've been snooping for the last while and if anyone is in the position I used to be please Pm me
P.S. Fuddx that balloon documentary was intense hahaha.

So what is your basic plan!?
I recently got fired from my job (I worked my ASS off there but the top boss was a CUNT and started firing people). Consequently I have been depressed and isolated and wondering WTF I should do now with no qualifications, no chance at getting into a university (not that I want to), and minimum wage jobs such as yours that I have no drive to even apply for :/

1) go to university. get a loan. make it happen. 2) too lazy? talk to your friends,. its not easy. but talk to them and say "I need a job" be honest, and be respectable enough that they will consider you. It's the lay of the land. But primarily get an document (degree/diploma) because it works bro. First off, even if you do have the level of expertise as a graduate, a document proves it. Second, it depends on your goals. I have no problem with roofers, handymen, retails people. I just feel my energy is better spent elsewhere, plus I have the opportunity to spend it elsewhere most importantly. So bottom line is try to understand where your opportunity lies and take the chance. Gluck bro, its scary but do all you can and I know you are capable. Peace

I cannot give you any tips since I'm just a university student that has 0 experience in the job market, but I've learned in one of my courses that enterprisers born from people in your situation :D
So, if you have something in mind that you think you can make profit of, go for it, don't be depressed man. At least thats the life history of some people we heard in that course.

Construction hours in the IBEW(International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) and 1611 Specialized construction unions have gone down 35ish percent over the last 2 years say the union reps. A lot of the guys I'm working with at the Precast plant are telling me that their plant is just coming back to life after 8 or so months of being laid off. Personally I'm going to work this job (pays well, full benefits) for the next year or two and get some savings going. After that when the economy (hopefully) rebounds and Vancouver starts booming again I'll start either a Welding or Electrical Apprenticeship. The current job has no real future (or at least I don't think so) and I want to be able to progress.
I love sitting at my desk nerding out for hours on end but I appreciate working with my hands. I don't think I could ever do a desk job. Which is a good thing because I don't think I have the drive to succeed at school hahaha. I get a certain satisfaction from building something with my own hands and seeing the tangible evidence of my toiling

Boohoo, when you moved out from your parents, you had to pay for your own life, damn that must have been hard for you...

We're all from different walks of life yo. Your life might have been harder, or you might just be a troll. Either way guy is just looking for some advice like I was. No need to get negative. I find it intimidating how much is at your fingertips these days. I mean back in the olden times of isolated villages it didn't matter what you wanted to do. Horrace the blacksmith is old and crusty and we need an apprentice. ENJOY YOUR NEW JOB FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! Now there's a multitude of options each with its benefits and drawbacks. Limitless educational opportunities depending on money and work ethic.

Construction is a pretty rewarding field. I remember reading something (a very long time ago) about how construction has one of the highest satisfaction ratings for a job. I'm not sure why, maybe its because you get to work with your hands and you get to see what you build/create.
My first job ever was doing bitch work for a friend's relative's construction company. Bitch work as in hauling out the trash, getting everyone's lunch, mixing cement, loading/unloading drywall/equipment, cleaning the toilet, etc. It was tough and I was almost fired (just because it was my first job and wasn't physically fit to do the work) but I kept at it and loved the experience from it. It was tiring as fuck but I always felt accomplished when i collapsed down on the bed every night.

Hate to say it but sometimes that's how the cookie crumbles. I was fired from my last job (was doing IT) in March because my boss fucked up big time and more or less used the new guy (me) as a scapegoat. I was working hard as heck there, all the co-workers liked me and even my boss (2 days before the guy fired me) told me "I see that you're working hard, don't think I don't notice these things". Shit rolls downhill and when you have kids to take care of, bills to pay, mortgages, you're going to sacrifice the new guy :D
Also don't be picky about jobs. If it's something that's interesting to you, or if it's in a field you want to work in, don't worry about it being a "minimum wage job". Do it for the experience and use it to meet people so you can network to a better position/another job. You won't be doing the job forever. Stick with it for a year or two, get some experience, and then go look for a better job. I mean even college graduates are having a lot of trouble finding jobs nowadays so you can't be too picky.
If you don't have to pay the bills (IE living with parents), your safest bet is going to college and hopefully "wait" the recession out. Honestly, with the way how the financial aid system works in the US, there's no reason why someone can't go to college if they wanted to. In NY, if you qualify for the maximum amount of financial aid, you can get a total of $4000 per semester (2 semester [$8000] per year), and the local colleges in NYC only costs $2k per semester.... which meant you had an extra $2k of pocket money.
These were "legitimate" colleges too, not like those bullshit colleges that are like $5k a semester that gets advertised on TV late at night or during daytime TV. If you have shit grades in high school, you can always apply to a crappier college, get good grades, and transfer to a better one.
One of my friend didn't even graduate from high school. He only had a "high school equivalence" from taking a test and he was able to get into a local college and transfer to a much better school after a semester or two.
