Hello.
I have a regular job, starts at 9, ends at 7 or so. Waking up is a real pain in the ass, it's like I'm dying inside and my body refuses to move.
I sleep around 1am which is late but I can't sleep earlier because, I don't know, I'm not tired enough, I want to play SC2 a bit more or my girlfriend is at home.
Anyway; I feel like I can't keep on having such difficult mornings and I wonder if there are ways to train myself to be in good shape with 6/7 hours of sleep or if I HAVE TO sleep at 11pm (and quit gaming).
Quitting my job is, of course, not an option, neither my gf.

having a job and a life is hard enough, gaming is a luxury, if you can't afford it, just drop it...

a quick fix is getting some over-the counter sleep pills. Check out Unisom, at any walgreens. They take about an hour to make you tired, but they do work. Also, there is a time at around 11 pm during which it is important to start shutting down, physically. I know it sounds like hocus pocus, but human bodies are just made that way. If you stay up online past 11 pm, it will be alot harder to calm your body down from the stimulation.
Another idea, if you want to train yourself to be on a better sleep schedule, work out. Go to the gym a couple times a week, and it will do wonders. You'll be tired at a normal time, waking up regularly, and feel alot better overall.
These solutions are just surface fixes though, deeper solutions involve re-evaluating life priorities

Work on your diet, less processed food, more quality veggies/fruit...don't include in your dinner much stuff that's hard to digest, either. Run about 20 minutes in the morning. It'll give you energy for couple extra hours instead . Go to sleep only when you feel sleepy, but wake up at fixed time every day.
Here's a detailed article on this issue.

You'll get used to it. Use the weekends to catch up on sleep.

Seems to me that's good advice. I do the running part and i feel really better in the morning.

Going to sleep when i'm sleepy never works for me. I'm always sleepy at the wrong times and I always need to watch like an hour of TV before I can sleep. Or atleast that's what I want to believe. I probably sleep better not watching any TV at all.

What are you doing during the day (job) that wears your body down so much where 6-7 hours of sleep i'snt enough? Ive gone years on 4-5 hours a night, i just figured 6-7 was the norm and its roughly what I get now. But like someone else mentioned work on your diet, eat a lot of good food. I remember hearing somewhere that after a certain point your body substitutes food energy for sleep, so if you're well fueled you should feel like the sleep you're getting is enough.

You pretty much have to give something up for one or the other.
I work including getting ready and travel time 7a.m. - 6 p.m. I have a GF. That doesn't include groceries, laundry, cooking, friends. Add all of that up and you have barely any time to game.
Now if you having gaming friends, you can mix those with gaming and 'hanging out'. Cooking has pretty much turned out to be fast food.
Laundry gets the man sniff test and then worn again.
Now that you freed some time...the GF will sinkhole that.

I had an internship for 10 weeks where I was in the office from 7am to 6.30pm. By the time I had dinner with friends and commuted home it would be around 8.30pm. I usually slept around 12.30 and got abt 5/6 hours of sleep a night. The first 2 weeks I was really exhausted and struggled every morning, but after a while my body got used to the routine... so yes it is possible. I do drink a lot of coffee though. And I'd say 7 hours of sleep is pretty luxurious haha.

You are looking for a shortcut. There is none. You don't need to sleep longer, you need to sleep harder!
Since you stated quiting your job and your gf is no option, quit sc2. 1+1=2
|
I always find myself wishing there were a few more hours in the day.
I guess one or the other has to go, either your girlfriend or starcraft 2.
The choice should be obvious
|
Eh, you get used to 6-7hr sleeps. I'd rather get an extra hour or two each weeknight and catch up on the weekends
|
Wow, you work 10 hours / day? That's a lot (50h week?), here most people work 40h or less. If its an option, cut down on work. Do you need all the money you are making? Are you willing to sacrifice material stuff in order to get more free time? Or are you barely able to pay rent as it is?
Another option is cutting down on SC2. You don't have to quit SC2, I know people who have a job, a wife AND kids and still manage to make room for gaming, just not 4-6h / day. It shouldn't be too hard squeezing in 1-2 h / day, and there are always weekends. You can't have a job+life+sleep and still have the time to become a mega pro gamer, but you can easily get a couple of games per day.

I do the same thing. I force myself off my computer at 11pm at the latest. I also sleep a lot more on weekends than I used to. But really, if you've got a job+girlfriend...gaming is a low priority.
|
heres how i look at it, if i was actively playing to the point where i posted about my life and job but added gaming just to make myself feel like it wasnt gaming. Then I'd know it was gaming when a guy like wishbones wrote this response.
Side note: would you stay up late if it wasnt for games,(discluding sex).. then dont stay up late because of this man made life ruiner! (edit) or *sleep depriverer*
|
Just man up and wear shades to cover the bags under your eyes like the rest of us. I'm sure most people on here have commitments like work/school/girls and still game.
tofucake is right 50 hours a week is a lot. In fact in the UK it can be illegal! If you shaved an hour off work each day you could get an hours kip after work and it would probably make things ok I know that's prob not gonna be possible but just saying.

Train sc2.Start earning money from it.Now it is your job.Problem solved???
On a more serious note a healthy diet+some exercising should do wonders.Personally though I always sleep 6/7 hours even less with very rare occasions when it goes over 10 hours.
|
Do you really want a girl friend? This apply to everything. Seems like you have some prioritization to do. Maybe go from gamer to spectator could make it easier to quit playing?

Dude i feel your exact pain. Since sc2 came out i haven't been getting enough sleep so my 9-6 job is becoming a pain and my girlfriend is making me choose between sleep and sc lol (if i stiffed her then she'd probably destroy my computer). Luckily i used to be a huge stoner and if you pass out while you're high you get awesome sleep and 6-7 hours is good enough. But seriously dude you just gotta wait for the novelty of sc2 to wear off and you'll be back to normal soon
|
I don't understand the problem have with mixing a life of work, gaming and love... I currently wake up @ 5:30 am for work everyday and get home around 5:30-6:30 depending on traffic and work hours, plus I just moved in with my woman, and I can still game enough to keep me happy everyday. Just get your body use to it, I usually head to bed around 10:30-11 every night.

The solutionis simple: coffee, lots of it.

Yes, yes but I get home at 8 or so, so sleeping at 10 basically means going home, eating, sleeping. I need to relax and game a lil' bit before I sleep or my day ain't worth it :D
|
I totally know how you feel.
Currently its like 9-5 job, workout from 5:30-7ish, make dinner and shower, starcraft 2 or girlfriend (or both ;D). And suddenly, its 1am. Definitely not getting enough sleep. I wake up as late as possible to try and get to work on time but that means buying breakfast and wasting money even though I could just as well wake up like 5-10 mins earlier to make some breakfast. But I can't because I HATE getting up in the morning.
Definitely would recommend exercising during the day. It has helped me boost my energy levels throughout the day instead of randomly falling asleep. Also be sure to keep a healthy diet eat small meals regularly will help you feel less tired.

AHAHAH You won't believe it but I actually tried.
I thought ok, let's get hammered and I'm gonna sleep that way hehe.
Fact #1. It works, I literally fell asleep in 15 minutes, well, not really sleeping, more like stuck in my head and my body wouldn't move.
Fact #2. You don't wake up in a good shape when you go to sleep wasted.
I asked friends who smoke a lot and they all told me they smoke at least 1 hour before sleeping because waking up is too hard otherwise =))

Sure there is a way. The body adapts and can adapt to any scenario as long as you give it time. It doesn't mean it's healthy for you.
Are you unhappy at work, or unhappy with your current life situation? If the answer is yes, you should dedicate your free time to finding a NEW JOB where the hours are more reasonable. The problem is people seem to think they have to take it by their boss and slave away for the rest of their life, when it clearly isn't the case. You can ALWAYS quit. No one is forcing you to work for anyone, and if you think you have no other options, you're deluding yourself. It's your life and you only get one chance to live life to the fullest.
|
when you feel like this you should take 3-4 days with 6-9 hours of sleep. what youre experiencing isnt good at all, you'll break down soon.
when i overwork myself, i just say "fuck the world, im not doing this shit anymore," and give myself a bad mentality about life, but i get over it with proper sleep.
just take a couple of days with 7-9 hours of sleep.
|
6-7 hours sleep is actually the recommended dose i'm sure. 8 hours is a myth, but i'm too lazy to look up the studies for this (they are out there though if you are interested). for adults anyway. i'm not sure why you feel not rested with such an amount of sleep. perhaps you're not falling asleep as fast as you think you are (going to sleep at 1am holds little value if you fall asleep at 3) or maybe you wake up at night due to stress or w.e?
also, never say you don't have an option to do X. you always have options, you always have choice. no matter who or where you are. of course in this game, cutting sc2 seems like an obvious solution from an outsider that knows little else about your life
|
Drop the gf. Not playing sc2 will make you a worse gamer in the long run, but not having a gf now will have little impact on whether you have one later on in life.
|
I'm going throught he exact same situation man.. no way out =_=;

yeah there's been a lot of stuff about it. I'm not sure if it's truly a myth, but certainly it's been questioned. There isn't much difference between 7 and 8hrs for me at all.

You need sleep so you have to make yourself more time, therefore one of the three has to go:
Job,GF, SC
Job = +money - time SC = + fun - time GF = + x - money & time
So I say it all depends on x + Show Spoiler +read: how good and how often
Notable is also that usually the more money and time you invest in your GF the better the x is. Losing job may also mean losing GF + Show Spoiler +not enough minerals = money so we can rule that option out. It all comes down to the true value of x which is pretty much individual
|
It doesn't cost anything to have a girlfriend. And who doesn't say having a girlfriend is fun? Hell, I'd rather spend a whole day in bed with a girl I love than spend it grinding away on the ladder. Better "x" has nothing to do with "investing" money in your girlfriend. Your girlfriend is not a fucking property you acquired. It's a human being, a person. Not a business agreement that thrives depending on the amount of money you invest.
