Yeah guys, it's me, the raging pussy (some of you may remember me after pl finals). Eversince i had my driving license, i occasionally drive my aunt's car. But everytime i take the car, some stupid problem happens and i panic in the middle of the traffic but in the end, nothing happens.

This time it was about LPG feeding. The car doesn't get any LPG although the depot is full. Car has enough benzin for 10 kms and i'm a long long way from a gas station.

I had no clue of what to do. I was in such a shock that i can't hear my mobile phone ringing (I texted my dad to call me and i heard him calling on 10th time), desperately trying to bring the car to the closest gas station. Stupid radio sitcom programs were the only thing i could hear at radio, so i shut it down immediately.

I could reach to the gas station, but the car made me feel so awkward as near the end, it refused to go for some time, but could reach me to the station without making me push the car. I had some benzin, brought the car home, my father was there. He offered me to take a look at the car.

I said that it can not be because of LPG depot is empty-pipes were leaking-gas filter was too dusty. Because it gets NO LPG at ALL. But LPG display shows that depot is full. My father just opened the hood and just put a single stupid little wire to its place and nothing is wrong now. And as i'm such a raging pussy, i have been raging since that moment (i think it's like 1 hour or so now).

Anyway, don't be car illiterate like me. No need to be a mechanic either, but at least when you look inside the hood, you should understand what is what.

If it makes you feel any better, the only thing I know how to do in a car is drive and fill it up. I don't even know how to change the oil :/

Also I had to google to figure out what an LPG depot is.

You don't have to change your own oil.... that's a dirty job that's easier to just give to a mechanic. My dad does tons of jobs on his cars yet he still doesn't do the oil himself. To those who choose to do it... more power to you.

Actually i don't know more than you about cars.

About LPG issue, it's another kind of fuel that is used in cars (in Turkey, it's so common). And depot is where LPG is.

LPG is apparently liquefied petroleum gas. I've never heard that before in my life, is it different from "gas" and is the depot the "tank"?

LPG is pretty popular over here, I guess also in other east european countires. Here it costs two times less than petrol, but it the consumption is a bit higher. For example if on petrol a car has consumption 8 liters per 100kms, on LPG is around 10-12 liters per 100kms.

Well, to be fair, in our parents' generation, a lot of the operations of a car were simple and largely mechanical. It's not as easy to be able to diagnose and fix simple problems for the layman anymore.

Everyone has their level of expertise, when it comes to cars a lot of folks rely on mechanics. I can do the basic maintenance and emergency stuff. ie: Change the battery, change the oil, change the windshield wipers, replace light bulbs, know which and where to put the correct fluid to top it off and so on. Emergency falls into the change a flat tire, boost the car and so on.

I worked for BMW for a while(not as a technician/mechanic) so I know those cars pretty well anything else comes down to the basics.

All I know is that cars are transportational devices supported by four circular objects called wheels. Once my car broke down 3 miles from home at midnight, and I had to walk all the way back home to fetch my dad. He fixed it in under a minute.

I really should work to be more car illiterate, just that I really am not interested

the first reply was quick striker stating he " can't even change a flat tire to a temporary replaceable tire... " Empyrean replied stating that he also couldn't, as such i provided them with your guide on how to change tires, considering it is a basic skill that they seem to regret not having.

im sorry it took me a while to find it since i didn't book mark it, and replies don't load unless i refresh.

lol i was on the phone with my credit card company so those 30 minutes were 2 in my perception.

But in terms of dollars, it's 16$ per 100 kms with petrol and 12$ or so with LPG. Actually these calculations are done in 30 seconds or so, it may be wrong. But difference is actually huge.

EDIT: I can change the tyres of my car. I did it for numerous times. But hood is totally out of my class.

pick up a manual for your car if you don't have one (you can get them at Autozone and NAPA). Either keep it in your car or read it. It shows you where what goes, etc. and how to change many things for that specific vehicle. most stuff like changing a tire, changing battery/oil, boosting it, etc. are very easy to do and just require common sense. most of the people on this site are intelligent enough that something that largely requires common sense (changing a tire) should be easy. if you have a small jack, tire iron/socket you should be able to connect the dots.

with the new age of cars the term mechanic is falling out of use because those people dont really exist anymore, at least you don't get trained that way.

Any 'mechanic' for new cars is called a technician, at least around here. Because they don't fix the problems, they plug the car into their special diagnostic computer for it, find the part that's broken and then replace it.

My dad's friend has been a mechanic for like 40 years, and he can diagnose a problem just by the sound of the car. It's pretty sick

Wow, you learn how to change a flat tyre in driving license tests? Cool. We don't learn those cool stuff in fucking courses, but believe me. Every single Turkish driver (even female ones) can do it in case they have to.
