It's called ibogaine, and can erase withdraw symptoms and cravings for drugs as powerful as heroin. It's a schedule 1 drug in the U.S., but 12 countries have already started using it to help drug addicts. Not much research has been done on it, but there have been no deaths that have ever been proven to have been caused by it.
However, I think this might actually cause a rise in heroin use. People who will scared to try heroin or other opioids before might start using it, knowing that they could just take a dose or two of ibogaine when they wanted to quit.

Oh shit... I hope this doesn't end up being the next methadone

The MAPS study should begin to answer questions about ibogaine’s efficacy and safety, but most experts think prescriptions are 10 to 15 years away.

Huh, interesting stuff. Hopefully they can get support for their research. A breakthrough like this would be huge for recovering addicts.
Woo, I'm a Vulture!

Why don't you just shift your paradigm and quit without the side effects?
|
To make the articlez more interesting, they always publish with the positive info to help make the story more sensational... but for some reason I get a feeling that this might be the miracle drug o.O
no side effects... this could do so much. i've worked with people trying to recover from heroin addiction, and its always so depressing to see them try to live cold turkey. They function so much better on heroin that their interactions with family / friends is actually much worse when they 're dopesick

i've always wondered why mech can't stim pack... will we see stim in tanks now?!

This is soooo old news! This has been used for decades now. Ibogaine is a psychedelic and I've tried it myself. I think the cure comes from the hallucinations since you face your biggest fears while under the influence. The biggest fear of a Opioid addict is to die with an OD...
edit: also people saying ibogaine could be the next methadone, you are wrong. Ibogaine has nothing to do with opiates and isn't even addictive.

If Heroin was just manufactured by the government and made legal, this wouldn't be a problem. The issue of coming off drugs these days is you have no skills and have no chance of finding even a shit job with your history.
They should just minimize damage and legalize it..rather than trying to continue the "War on Drugs"...

Usually these kinds of things "cure" the addicition while being ridiculously addictive in themselves. They always get so up and arms about this thing not being addictive and then it turns out it get out on the black market under names like "Brain melter"
The guy above me must be trolling, legalize heroin? I can see people wanting to legalize cannabis but heroin? Are you mad? Have you ever seen a heroin addictive?

If you know nothing about the subject just keep it to yourself. Portugal legalized all drugs for personal consumption (heroin, cocaine, lsd and other chemicals) and the use decreased so much it is now a case study in many countries.

Heroine is a helluva drug. ... SLEEP!

Really? That's really interesting. I've always been uncomfortable with the "legalize everything" argument, but a solid empirical case like that makes me more open to it. Just wondering, were drugs a big problem in Portugal before they legalized everything?
Regarding the OP, I hope this drug works out. It sounds promising, but somehow these kinds of things never end up being as good as they sound imo.

Doesn't Switzerland give heroin addicts controlled prescription grade heroin to wean them off the drug?
|
Seems cool. A drug addict would love to take a drug that made them quit drugs. It's just win win, we are good at taking drugs and the ultimate dream is to take a drug to get better. If it beats drug substituion like methadone or ceboxan then you speed your recovery up pretty seriously in the beginning and that can save lives.

How do you end up researching new drugs and stuff, a masters in pharmacology?

Hell yeah, psychedelics curing problems. Best type of drug yet gets very little attention, people would rather be "fucked up" than expand their minds.

From my understanding it isn't possible to die coming off of an opiod addiction. Granted you'll feel like you want to die through other means... Surprisingly enough coming off of a MAJOR alcohol binge or a habit of benzo's, however, can kill you. Hospitals and the like only treat patients with detox wishing to come off of alcohol / benzos / and opiates.
Edit: Just realized you said die from an overdose. Definately different than dieing from coming off of the drug. My mistake!
Oh and making heroin, vicodin, oxycontin, and pretty much any other opiate legal is a huge mistake. I don't agree with America's criminalization but complete legality is not the way either. If the war on drugs money (ie targeting the 'source' ) were focused on a large scale treatment structure I feel we would be in a better place.
