Napoleon Dynamite: Well, nobody's going to go out with *me*!
Pedro: Have you asked anybody yet?
Napoleon Dynamite: No, but who would? I don't even have any good skills.
Pedro: What do you mean?
Napoleon Dynamite: You know, like nunchuku skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills... Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.

I want to learn a new skill. Since I've moved recently to a new area I don't have much to do in the way of socializing. I figured I'd use my mass amounts of time to do something other than play League of Legends and WoW (although I'm down to play with anyone from TL :3) and learn a skill or talent or even find a new hobby!

Does anyone have any ideas? Preferably something that isn't too expensive as tuition/books already takes a big dent out of my wallet. My friends said I should learn harmonica or some magic tricks, both seem alright. Knitting, juggling, and cooking are also interests of mine. Knitting/cooking will actually produce something of value so I'll probably end up getting into either one some time in the future.

Any ideas TL? Something good for parties? Something to impress ladies? Something that's just a hell of a lot of fun to do?

Also looking for some good free multiplayer stuff or any good online Dungeons and Dragons clients if such a thing exists. :3.

RIP Aaliyah

Freestyling takes the vote. It's easy to find some instrumentals and it's good to be an ass to someone at a party while making it seem like good fun. You either need to be clever or listen to a lot of hip hop to understand it though.

if not magic yeah, go for cooking, I want to learn to be a good Filipino cook myself.

If you learn how to speed a rubiks DON'T be that lame-ass guy who whips it out at a party to try to look smart. You want to be the cool dude in the corner being like: "thats not really hard at all".... then embarrassing him and wandering off.

I've literally never seen an actually impressive freestyle rapper (and I've looked), I think its one of those things that people just can't do well enough to ever be that amazing....like beat-juggling in DJing, its fucking hard as shit and sort of impressive on a mental level if you know how fucking hard it is, but I've never actually seen someone do it without being slightly off.

All the stuff that sounds impressive at first is the canned lines they have preprepared.

almost every single girl in my drama class loves a guy who can dance

as bad as i am with girls, i'm surrounded by them in my program and they love dancers (masculine dancers)

*just because you can do the splits doesn't make you feminine. you can be masculine while still being flexible lol. its all in the confidence when dancing

Dancing gets the vote, doesn't matter what kind, learn to move and you will look superior to 90% of people at any club/party with music playing.

Yeah, I've already bookmarked some cooking channels on youtube and basic guides.

As far as athletic skills are concerned, I'm pretty out of shape. I have a huge frame so really acrobatic stuff is out of the question, I'm too tall and broad to be a great tumbler.

I'll look into lockpicking I suppose. Rubix Cube doesn't interest me.

I think it's fine as long as they're not playing over people who are trying to talk to each other. It's pretty impressive (to me) to be able to play an instrument, but if it goes on for hours then it makes me want to smash it over the person's head.

you play drums iirc. thats a GREAT basis for learning a new non-percussion instrument. buy a cheap guitar and teach yourself how to play - mine cost like 100 dollars and plays just fine even according to people who have played for years. o and if ur gonna play guitar, u should practice singing too then u can impress ladies by double bassing/hihatting with ur feet and guitaring with ur hands and singing with ur mouth at the same time cuz that would be fucking sick ^^

edit: nvm you already know how to play guitar lol

give piano a shot i say. you can get a keyboard for like 200 and as a musician its probably good to have one anyway even if you dont play it that much

I find some of the comments about learning piano very interesting.

While piano is worthwhile to learn and has the bonus of giving you fast fingers, it is NOT easy to learn. Well, I guess sort of easy to learn but very difficult to be good at. I have played the piano since I was very young, and I still consistently run into people that are vastly better than I.

In summary: While rewarding, piano takes a lot of time to be able to really do something with. You won't play Alla Turca right off the bat. Also, if you're looking to impress someone, don't do piano as you WILL run into those people (surprisingly frequently) who are amazing at piano because they practice for 4 hours a day since they were 6 years old.

That would be my advice

Wow I was going to make a blog like this as well! I've been thinking about learn how to play guitar (but you already know this) or piano or drums, drawing, backflip/wallflip, dancing, magic card tricks, learn fruity loops or some random party trick that will impress people

Maybe this?

Assuming skills that can be self learnt relatively easily:

Piano sucks as a skill for impressing people. Why, you ask?

1. Too fucking big, can't take it anywhere = nobody will see your skills.
2. There are people who are ridiculously good.
3. Takes too long to get to an acceptable "show-off" level.

Trust me, I've been playing piano since I was like 8 and it doesn't help at all.

I second dancing.

I gotta say, there are some ways of pulling it off though. Not at a party though.....

What about waiting at a bus stop (or something similar)? Whip it out to kill some time, and it definitely gets some attention. Being able to solve it quickly isn't even a prerequisite in this situation.

Granted, it works better when it's a 4X4 or a 5X5 cube (or higher, although I dunno, I haven't gotten a V-cube 6 or 7..... yet.....), but whatever..... It's still pretty impressive. And can easily get at least a conversation started.

Pick something else than cooking.

Then learn how to cook decently on the side - its not something that really takes a big chunk of your time, more of a slow process for years to come. Just make your own meals and thats it

anyone who puts in time can learn to solve a rubix cube in a day, forget that idea its lame and no one cares.

i'm also against lock picking, whenever is anyone going to be impressed by that skill? doors have different locks, and lock picking generally requires special tools, honestly, its not something you'll be able to show off very often in your life.

you want to be able to do things with normal everyday objects at parties. things with coins, dice, lighters, etc.

Flaring

As long as you don't fuck up and drop something, it can be REALLY impressive. It requires nothing but whats already on hand at a party and everyone will enjoy watching it.

Yeah, everyone should know how to cook. Not as a hobby but as a life skill.

If you don't like being cold, don't do this unless you can pony up for a dry suit.

My suggestion: Carpentry. Building basic stuff like a bookshelf or table is super useful and can save you a lot of money and is surprisingly easy once you have the right tools.

Where'd you move to? Also, 3x3 cubes are easy, and with a few hours practice you can solve any 3x3 in <1 minute.

I recommend drums. One time fee, then you just bang on them until it doesn't sound like ass.

Or Parkour. It's awesome.

Indeed. Get the 7x7. Those are awesome, impressive, but not overly difficult to learn.

If you can handle the initial investment, I would definitely reccomend piano or guitar.

Yeah...guitar is fun as hell. I started playing about a year ago, and I'm okay at it (I need to practice more, TBH). I said drums because my exroommate plays bass, and if you moved near me we could start a crappy band.

MOAR INSTRUMENTS!

I play like five instruments and I still have another 3-4 that I'm thinking of learning or at least picking up and messing around with. Can never have too many musical talents. Singing is nice too since you already play guitar.

Also fancy card shuffling and card throwing. Pretty much equally pointless as lockpicking but also awesomer if you get pro at it.

edit: Jesus don't do piano, I've never heard of anybody impressed by average-level piano (by average I mean like RCM grade 8). It would seriously take some Langlang level shit to impress people at least where I live. Then again I practically live in China.

Ive pretty much spent my whole life learning "skills", random shit all the time, penspinning, freerunning, breakdancing, tricking, gymnastics, piano, guitar, beatboxing, etc.etc.etc.

It doesn't get you girls trust me

Its fun though

but if you want a skill that gets you girls, learn PUA.. Its no different from any of the other skills, but PUA is really easy and scores loads of hot chicks

Try ballroom dancing. It's a great way to meet people in general, and if you get good at it you'll feel ridiculously sexy. Plus, there's a great variety of dances between latin(cha, rumba, ect), standard(waltz, Vwaltz, quickstep, ect), nightclub(hustle, west coast swing, nightclub 2 step), and others.

^^west coast swing jack and jill competition, basically people are randomly selecting to dance together and improvise everything on the spot

they are all pretty awesome tbh

My friend can say them all in alphabetical order, knows where on the map all the countries are, knows the population of countries and the population density of about half the countries. O yah and of course can tell which flag belongs to which country and draw a flag to whatever country you ask him to draw.
