Hey guys

According to TL demographics, I think I'm just 2 or 3 years older than the average user so I'm guessing a lot of people have been through what I'm going through now.. (I hope)

Because I'm looking for some advice..

Basically, I'm a uni student who has a part time job right but since it's summer time, they've been giving me full time shifts. It totally blows and long story short, I got a bit pissy and ever since the month of May, my performance has been fucking shitty according to one of the managers.

Apparently, they've only put up with me because I've been picture perfect the entire year before. But now, I just had a 15 minute conversation with my manager talking about my attitude towards coworkers and customers (I'm a barista).

3 things

I'm rude towards customers like for example someone asked for the time and I said "I don't know"

Apparently that was a strike because I didn't walk over 3 steps to check our clock. I complained because I truthfully didn't know time and was doing other work and if my manager who was standing beside me knew the time then why did it matter that I didn't go and check? Like wtf?

Another strike was apparently when I said to another manager, "Because I don't know how to make the fucking drink"

The first and only curse word I've ever said at work and it caused such drama.

It was reallyyy busy this one time and all our ingredients were bone dry so I had to grab more in order to complete our drink orders. There was a longer than usual queue of drinks and instead of asking me "What's wrong" or whatever, the manager says to me in a rude tone, "Why are you so slow"

And not only did I not have the ingredients, it was an order that I had never had before and it took some time to think about and gather ingredients for so I didn't fuck it up.

The manager was being a dick and so I replied with whatever I quoted above.

Anyway, so because of that and my so called poor work performance since the start of summer, I've been given no shifts this week in order to think about what I want.

I can feel that everything is already awkward at work and I don't know if I really want to stay there anymore. Is it possible for me to just come back and be like sorry guys, whattup, lets smile and get back to work happily.

Errr.. the way I feel now is that being a barista sucks balls, it's more shifts than I can bare with, the manager is a fucking dick and tells endless jokes that ARE NOT FUNNY and he doesn't stop talking about how smooth he is with girls and even offering to get me laid (wtf).

But of course... we all need money don't we?

It's a gamble.. and je ne sais pas..

If you dont like working there, you have the option to move on, especially if its only part-time work. That means that its not your career, nor is the money too good to pass up . I say find something new and fresh, and you will probably feel alot better.

However, everyone deals with shitty problems at work. Im forced to start at 5:30am-5:30pm outside doing construction, and our winters get to be minus 40 So, in my eyes, being a part-time barista in a nice warm coffee shop is heaven compared to the daily shit I gotta endure lol.

Either way, goodluck with your choice!

No totally.. I'm not saying I have it the worst.

I've seen what construction guys have to deal with...
Paving the roads with those hot smelly ass machines in 30 degree Celsius hot weather..
(that is fucking rough)

I just.. didn't think what was so good a year ago would turn so sour like this.

clearly you have some rough personal time.
Definitely try to stay on this job because it's pointless to look for a new one, your irritability will simply carry over to your new workplace.
Just explain to your boss how it is, maybe take some extra personal time to cool off.

I work more then 25 hours a week flipping signs for Little Caesars. Just be happy you have a job with air conditioning. I live in socal and it was over 100 all last week. Sucks.

But yeah... I would say just stick it out and try to be in a better mood i guess. I was pretty pissed when my boss told me I would be working outside instead of in store, but I decided to look at it as an opportunity and think about it differently. Boss has noticed my improved attitude and is happy about it. Just personal experience, but why not give it a try?

It seems the problem here is too many shifts. You shouldn't get fired for asking your boss to give you less shifts. I think being a barista means you have to be a people person as well as having good customer service. (it's a pain in the ass, and alot of times the requests are retarded, i know). I work as a waiter and more often than not, managers are dicks. it's just in their nature to be total control freaks especially in the food/drinks/hospitality service.

i'd say build relationships and talk with your co-workers. they may have the same views as you about the boss/workplace.

about finding another job. if you can put up with your current one, i'd say stick with it. unless you can find one that will help you with your profession choice or one that has a flexible schedle.

Your second strike may have just been 1 curse word, but it depends on how your tone was when you said that. The third strike was a bit unfair but life isn't fair isn't it? If you can explain to your manager how you truly feel about and if he can look passed that, then maybe you can begin working again if you really want to keep the job. You should give him a call! I hope this helped, and I hope the best for you!

Just be glad you don't have a factory line job. I worked in a sawmill for a year. I was so depressed, that shit was so monotone and boring. Coworkes were total inbreds and the whole experience was pure shit. Only thing somewhat decent about it was the pay, lol.

I usually hear people in your situation with the same complaints...but I'm not in the same situation...I'm worse.

I work full time (7am - 3:15pm) and I take full time university courses. I'm lucky that my university courses directly deal with my current job (Group Insurance related) so I only have to study 10 hours a week but after I'm done this (June 1 I'll be done) I'm going to go to University to become an Actuary. You know what my study schedule will be? Monday - Friday 3 hours each day, Saturday 9am - 5pm, Sunday 9am - 5pm. Do the math, basically 2 full time jobs!

Not to try to rub things in but my current job has me dealing with millions of dollars each day...so I'm sorry to say but it's all how you look at your current situation. I'm only 22 and I've had a bunch of lucky breaks to get me to where I am now but I really believe it's how my outlook on things is. The jobs I had before this one sucked big time. They were boring, and I had to deal with stupid stuff all the time. I learned to bite my lip because I knew it was just a stepping stone. Keeping that mindset helped lots too because it made me more relaxed.

I also look at it like this, if I can't handle this right now...when I'm done school I will be f*cked. That's if I can pass it! I'm different than most people my age but sometimes biting your lip and just working your ass off will get you somewhere. Take it from me, someone who has experienced it already.

One more tip I do; when you get down time to relax...relax hardcore! After a hard day of work I'll just want to play some vids. I'll have people asking me to help them with stuff but if I had a tough day...I decline them and relax. Use your relax time to the fullest and push yourself during your work time. Only way you'll get through it and make it to the top.

Best of luck!

i work at a sawmill here but thank god i dont have to do the factory stuff, i do random new stuff every day and the pay is amazing.

if you dont like the management there and feel it compromises your ability to work properly and there's nothing that can be done then just move on

if it can be resolved then resolve it, there's never really much more to it than that. If you cant fix the problem AND cant move on then shitty times you're gonna have to learn to be tough. gl though

I never last more than a month at retail/fast food, try labour man its really good for the EVERYTHING. you feel great, u know u worked hard, u feel stronger, u feel better, u feel motivated, and just bust ur ass all day and watch the time fly while ur having fun shootin the shit, and just fucking chillin bro its real nice compared to working for shitty ass managers who think they know it all. like tell him to fuck off only once u have a new job that is. ive done it before lol.

edit: especially if your co-workers are all like, i hate that manager, but none will say anything.

jjun212 manager blog:
hey guys

so this new guy jjun212 comes in who i thought would be a good employee but he has this really bad attitude with ppl. we try to be pleasant to our customers to keep them coming back but when a nice old lady asked him what time it was, he wouldnt answer her even though the clock was just three steps away from him. and i was standing right behind him! imagine how he'd behave if i wasn't watching.

my co-manager who is the nicest guy in the world asked why jjun212 was having trouble making a certain type of coffee, but jjun212 cursed at him. coffee isn't rocket science. u just have to mix 2 or 3 things together? why is everything an argument with this guy?

he's also really slow compared to all our other customers when making drinks. he doesn't try to learn or get faster, and just complains all the time. all the other workers and managers don't like him so we gave him the week off, and to be honest, its been the best week ever.

hopefully when he comes back he will be a better employee. i try to cheer him up with a lot of jokes, and i even offered to set him up with a few of the girls i know. maybe that will make him happier. i really don't like firing ppl and he seems like he really needs the job, so i probably will give him another chance.

Lol, you sound like a horrible employee. People like you make a shitty experience for the customers, coworkers, and the managers. As someone who has had several foodservice jobs, I'm going to ask you on behalf of your coworkers to quit. I'm sure everyone would be happier for it.

Edit: I just read the blog over and saw that you apparently used to be better. So I guess you're capable of shaping up. Just do it. But seriously, I don't understand the point of writing a bitch blog about your own fucking behavior. I mean, I guess you're complaining about your job, but the focus of the article is just how pissy and unpleasant you've been.

You are going to get little sympathy because:

1) You have a job.
2) Your managers and coworkers seem fairly nice and reasonable.
3) You're really whining about nothing.
4) You have been giving more hours -> more money ... usually ppl are asking for more hours.

So either leave or suck it up. If you really have a problem with the hours then man up and talk to your boss about it. If you absolutely can't stand it then leave. It's that simple.

you should keep the job, and instead of bursting out at the manger, like when you said "Because I don't know how to make the fucking drink" . you should use sarcasm at work its funner and you wont get in trouble for it, and do it with the customers too. That's what i do because i deal with a tough manager, customers, and drug addicts all day (i work at a conveinent store next to a halfway house)

I used to work as an usher for concerts at my school. For about two years I was a great worker, always on time, followed every rule, was conscientious, etc. and rose quickly to a managerial position.

In my senior year I started to really slack off and was eventually called out by my manager.

It was weird. In my mind, I still thought of myself as enjoying the job and wanting to be good at it, but my behavior showed otherwise. Halfway through getting bawled out by my boss I realized that my lousy job performance contained the truth about my feeling for the job, and my thoughts were lagging behind. I was starting to make good money in another part time job, so I quit.

Moral: It is possible to come to hate your job without even realizing it. I hope you can find something else to do, or find some way to enjoy your current job.

Also: Speaking as someone who has worked in customer service, saying "I don't know" when a customer asks the time and not making any effort to find the answer is just terrible.

EDIT: I find it kind of weird that you have worked at this place for a year and yet are apparently not close enough to any of the other employees to talk to them about this. Unless there are a lot of other negative vibes going around at work that you didn't mention I would think that if you made a conscious effort to get back in the good graces of your manager/co-workers its probably possible to resume work without much awkwardness.

EDIT AGAIN: You only listed two strikes. More thrilling stories plz.
