Hey again all~ Thanks for all the great comments and support!
Got some free time today so I made 2 more dishes :D

Number 1: Wild Mushroom Risotto

As I mentioned in my previous blog, I feel that risotto is a true test to see if I can handle Italian cuisine, so of course I wanted to make it! Of course I used authentic arborio rice (thx Rayzorblade!) and dry white wine. It felt pretty strange having to lord over the rice to keep adding/reducing broth and stirring, but I have to say I really outdid myself :DDD

As a noob chef I don't like to brag (yet at least ;D) but when the dish came out and I tasted it I felt like I had an orgasm XD The way the rice was creamy and mixed well with the sauteed mushrooms was beyond my imagination! Now I understand why some call risotto a true Italian chef's dish. (I probably got really lucky with how it turned out though lol...sooner or later something catastrophic will happen in the kitchen)

Number 2: Steak au Poivre (with Peppercorn Sauce)

I know a lot of people are going to ask why I'm using mushrooms every dish XD They were on sale at the market and I happen to love them! Also they are in season so are relatively cheap for a newb chef like me.

This actually came out medium instead of medium rare like I wanted, since I don't really have a good measure of how long to cook the steak, but aside from that I found it quite tasty as well. It was slightly too salty for my taste (probably didn't even have to salt the peppercorn sauce since the onions and garlic would produce enough flavour.

Anyways, Pics!

Again, thanks to everyone for your support! I wish there was a way to send them to you for tasting (smellovision? )

I'm a total noob as well :D Most of the recipes I find online, as well as how to cook. Youtube is a great place to start (Search "How do I cook _____"). Obviously some liberties can be taken with certain ingredients but in general thats how I learn to cook.

That steak looks awesome... wish i had some food right now T_T

I remember after eating a mushroom burger at McDonald's my piss smelled absolutely putrid. Looking back, I can advise, with no remorse, don't go to McDonald's.

Once again, these look absolutely delicious. I'll say it again, keep up the good work! I myself enjoy cooking, but I'm too lazy to do it most of the time, so this is quite inspiring for me, :D

If you aren't in an apartment and have a yard with shade, you could try growing your own mushrooms. It takes a weekend of work drilling holes in logs, but then you get about 5 years of mushroom crop with relatively little additional effort. Worth it for a fellow mushroom lover, perhaps

Also your steak looks so good x_x way to make me hungry

WARNING! Constructive criticism:
What cheese did you finish with for the risotto? Did you make a mushroom puree or just added the sauted mushrooms at the end?
It looks loose to me. You should use less liquid at the end, finish with butter/cheese (such as mascarpone) and a puree of mushrooms to give it a more mushroomy flavor.
The mushrooms would look better if you cut them in quarters than slicing them. They look like leftover pizza toppings. Actually it would be better if you chopped some and folded them in the risotto itself and added quartered pieces on top. That'll give you mushrooms pieces in every bite.
You don't have much color on your mushrooms, they look boiled. Next time, try to give them a cook sear on high heat, that'll bring out their flavors.
Also, you overcrowded your bowl. No need to full it up like that. Never plate on the edges.

Your mushroom sauce looks broken. Did you use milk/halfnhalf instead of heavy cream?
Your portion on the steak plate is good but you should build a mound of mushrooms in the middle and place the steak over them. Why hide the most expensive (main component) piece of your dish with garnish? It would look better if you threw the chopped parsley with the mushroom garnish and gave them a toss at the end and top the steak with whole leaf parsleys.

Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to try that next time :D
I used parmesan for the whole of the risotto dish and added the sauted mushrooms after. I didn't use much liquid at the end, but I did do butter and cheese like you mentioned (parmesan, not marscapone; don't have that :< ) Unfortunately I don't have a blender to blitz the mushrooms so its difficult to make any purees (unless theres another way?). Dicing the mushrooms into the risotto sounds like a good idea though- will definitely try that!

About the sauce, I used both milk and cream (equal parts), but probably should have had more cream instead. Also agree with your plating ideas, I don't really have much plating experience so anything to make the dish look more presentable is always welcome =D

After the first thread I was skeptical...after this thread I can't believe you have no prior cooking experience...or you have vastly underestimated yourself!

Either way it looks really good! keep it up!
