Guess what - I am from a similar culture and have very many good friends from china (not first generation Chinese-American, but born there) -- and there are even subtle things that point in the direction of chauvinism in the culture. Coming from a (perhaps equally) chauvinistic culture I compared and saw similarities.
As a chinese person you know how big a part of your own culture Confucianism is. I have extensively read and studied Confucius and if you dont think it is chauvinistic then theres no point even discussing this LOL....and you need to actually read and think about the nature of a Confucian society.
Only in 1949 was there even a CALL for male and female equality, which hasn't been fulfilled very much. keep in mind that with the one child law female abortions were very common and normal, purely on the basis of gender. But i'm sure that's just a coincidence...its not that the male could continue the family line whereas the female is 'thrown out' and given away to another family when married.

To be fair I moved from China very early so I'm not familiar with Confucius. All I have to go on is real life experience when going back there - and guys treat girls very well from what I have seen. Maybe I have only experienced the new somewhat-globalised generation (but then again my own family there, uncles and aunts etc all do great and seem happy and the men are respectful to their wives)
There is a whole host of problems in China to be sure (insane focus on education, corruption etc) but I definitely think mistreating of women there is way overblown in the Western social consciousness.
I'm gonna leave this discussion now. I hate these arguments and I wish people would just stop lumping people together in generalised groups.
