The game that really got me by the balls (and it is still holding) is Age Of Empires II - The Conquerors. Living in Macedonia, having no internet for the masses at the day, resulted in me playing with the constant local players. The passion and nerdiness led me through destroying all of the self-proclaimed "masters" of the game in our town. I still remember that last game that announced the big pause from AoE II - The Conquerors, and it was with the last pair of "masters" from our town, who where 28 and 35 years old, and me and my friend 10-12(i think). We won that 2vs2, and then one thing led to another and i didn't play AoE II - The Conquerors against human being for like 5-6 years, although i still played games occasionally at home. High school passed in more or less social active manner, and then came college. I needed that gaming competitive outlet that only RTS games could provide. So me and my old buddy with whom we raped AoE II - The Conqerors start playing, but now Internet is widely spread. There is this IGZ client for AOE, and there are these guys going Castle Age in like 15:30 minutes, doing stuff we would never thought they would work, they neglect our back then, well thought off timing attacks. It felt really frustrating, so in order to start winning (only in that stance my outlet works ), we start massing games like crazy, watching professional replays from tourneys, which sparkled the flame for AoE II even more. I mean there was SO much to the game, i knew it would be fun to learn the game all over. So we played and played, and we reached a certain ranking point that we couldn't surpass. And that ranking point was not that great, to be honest.
Then we strayed once again from AoE II, and i started playing DotA on the internet for killing time and fun with friends. Then one night while we are waiting for the rest of our DotA buddies to get online, my Czech friend goes on with a monologue about StarCraft and his clan, his scheduled matches etc etc. I hear all that with some reserve, cause even though i loved StarCraft campaign i never thought the game would offer gaming competitive interesting games. I mean the biggest difficulty was grasping that fixed bases position (which if you played AoE II is a no-go), and only 2 resources (in AoE you have 4 resources to balance out). Watching few matches on youtube from Korean scene and my friend going through with the strategies as they were played out, the correct decisions, the wrong ones, the micro tricks, tickled my strategy-heart. This all happened year and half ago, and since then i have been playing SC on iCCup and reached C- in 2 seasons. So now it's summer and me and my friends are gonna play AoE II during it. Guess what? I have passed the rank limit i previously couldn't. I mean while playing SC i knew there were ALWAYS things to do while playing. My micro skills in AoE II have sky rocketed, and i was like "why and how am i playing this game so fucking fast?". My all content being, will stop writing now.
P.S. All the rape i will induce in Age Of Empires II - The Conquerors, this summer, i dedicate to www.teamliquid.net for nurturing my gaming-heart. :p
