I don't understand how this is going to do a huge amount of damage to your family's macro. Your economy hasn't been damaged. Also, you clearly haven't been keeping your money low if y'all can afford $2,800.

I've always been pretty skeptical about the whole wisdom teeth removal thing. It's always sort of struck me as a scam, considering that dentists pretty much tell every single person that they need to get their wisdom teeth out.

Also very interested in this topic. Was told it'll be 1.5 k to do four of mine this fall From googling and talking to my dentist, there are a few different things that can happen. The most likely that she has seen is an impacted tooth towards the front of your mouth. In this case the tooth cuddles up to the tooth just ahead of it and gets stuck at a lower position that does not erupt through the gum line. This is a bigger problem on the lower set because the tooth/nerves that grows down(in a lower position) can sever other nerves relating to muscle control of your face and tongue.

The upper ones are not as dangerous (apparently) if impacted forward, the only danger is removing them later can potentially damage the nasal cavity. This unfortunately is all through through word of mouth(har har) so I could have misunderstood and whatnot, don't quote me ^^ Anyone have happy stories about not removing wisdom teeth??

I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled out soon too! But my mom is being cheap and says she'd prefer to only pull the left side only or only bottom 2. Is that ever done or recommended? since I only hear everyone getting all 4 taken out

Some people are lucky enough to be able to not get all 4 removed, while others have to remove at least one. I think dentists charge per tooth, so probably just remove the ones that are causing unbearable pain if you're that concerned about money.

Overall, getting them all removed is probably best in the long run as its 4 less to to worry about regarding future problems caused by decay and old age.

apparently the teeth are gonna press all my other teeth in and make em all fucked up
which is terrible (especially since I already got braces so wasted money if i dont remove)

And ya on the bill its like 500 each fucking tooth

Nah she's right, since you can't use the side you pulled out the teeth from for over a week, it's kinda handy to still be able to chew with one of the sides lol.

Cost me 172euros for the left side (~$250) last year. Seriously, it takes like what... 3 hours ? so the guy's earning $900+ an hour ? ROFL.

Have you never watched the Xrays? For most people they're growing the wrong way or something. Mine, for instance, were going to push against my teeth and get all of my bottom teeth crooked towards the inside.

For my friends, the things were shards of teeth. Mine were complete so the procedure was a lot cheaper.

I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled out soon too! But my mom is being cheap and says she'd prefer to only pull the left side only or only bottom 2. Is that ever done or recommended? since I only hear everyone getting all 4 taken out

This can work but isn't recommended because sometimes the top teeth sort of rely on the bottom ones to definitely stop growing or something like that.

The teeth that look completely fine are "cheap" to remove anyway - would rather have that than to have an inequal face structure going on. Some people may not care but yeah I'm not a big fan of botched jobs.

My top teeth were fine and I got them removed for $100 each and the bottom ones were $400 each and the dentist had to go dig for them... They don't put you under around here too apparently - it's kind of uncomfortable.

Oh also, tooth powder smells disgusting and I scared a little kid when I walked out with my bloody lower lip and my paralyzed face. Someone said it took 3 hours? For me it took like 1 hour and cost $1000.

Also again, they said "there's a small chance I'll hit a nerve and you'll permanently lose all sensation in one side of your face" and I had to sign the paper. Hope you guys feel better. ^^

I was told by a dentist when I was younger that I would have to get my wisdom teeth removed, but my mouth shifted around and they grew in alright, didn't end up needing to get them taken out - I guess I got lucky.

Funny you make a thread on this, I had my two right side teeth taken out just yesterday.

I need to get all four of mine out, but the right side ones crowned much earlier than the left, so they came out earlier. The one's on the top are quite easy to remove for the dentist. I payed $AU150 for that one and it was out of my mouth literally before I knew what they were doing.
Bottom one's are more expensive because they typically go into the bone and have to be drilled out. They are also closer to nerves. Payed $AU350 for the bottom one.

I don't have any insurance and all four of mine are going to cost ~$AU1K, so the fact that you're quoted for $US2800 leads me to believe that the US health care system is much more broken than I thought, or you need to find a cheaper dentist.

If you haven't had Xrays taken yet, go do that, because they very obviously show if your wisdom teeth are going to be an issue. If you leave them too long, they can fuck up the rest of your teeth, so you'll have to have them removed AND need braces or something, so if it looks like they need to come out, i'd just bite the bullet and get them done.

Also, three hours is waaaay too long, wouldn't take more than an hour.

I had mine removed out during the holidays like a year and a half ago. It can cause some dental issues later on. Some people do get lucky, but not many. I'd make a witty Terran analogy, but I'm tired.

If they were like the impacted one on the picture there's a high chance they're slowly pushing all of your teeth together or something. I'm sure some dentists are dishonest about it though seeing how the procedure seems to give them revenue in the thousands of dollars in some places.

ouch
Did you see the Xrays? If your teeth look like they're at 45 degree angles to the rest (like mine did), it's probably going to need to happen.
But look on the bright side, it's an excuse to eat nothing but ice cream for a week!

Edit: On the side of caution, my sister didn't get hers out early (she got them out at ~29) and they messed with the rest of her teeth, which was fixable, but braces aren't fun.

A few months ago the dentist told me I needed 2 of them taken out, I was supposed to go to a consultation during spring break. However knowing the cost I "forgot" to tell my mom about it. I'll probably do it later when I get a job or something, or hope I get lucky like Xeris. And yes healthcare costs in the US are ridiculous.

I had mine taken out in Korea. cost less than 50 bucks. I had two more removed back in Canada and they cost less than 200 because of insurance.. 2.8k probably means you have to do anesthetics with "surgery"

You will most likely be knocked out for your operation. When you wake up you should be the most high you have ever been in your life. I could barely stand and time was FLYING by. It was pretty awesome.

Only 4% of the population actually NEEDS their wisdom teeth out. Every oral surgeon tells the patient that "Your wisdom teeth could impact your other teeth and cause serious damage". Basically it is a whole crapload of preventative medicine (err..dentistry). Look up some graphs/statistics regarding wisdom tooth removal, its shocking how few of us actually need it.

Its the dumbest thing ever, its going to be like correctional glasses/lenses soon, everyone is going to need it. Its basically yet another money sink for all of us that will bolster the pockets of oral surgeons and the like.

I've had this done kawaii and the sooner you do it age wise the better. I believe its because they're not as large and close to your teeth as when you are older. Mine were impacted with the bottom two more so than the top. Basically I got a panoramic xray and it showed me what was going to happen if I didn't take them out. The actual procedure for me was something like not eating for six? hrs before the operation because they were going to put me under.

They took all 4 out and I was none the wiser. Your face is pretty swollen though and stopping the initial bleeding is kinda annoying. For myself I was also unable to feel my chin area for a good half a day. I would also suggest not messing around too much with the gauze they give you. I did and it lasted longer than it should've. After the operation they give you antibiotics and painkillers. I forgot what antibiotic I got but I also got giant sized ibuprofen and a prescription for vicodin if it got too much. DON'T TAKE BOTH AT ONCE! It made me want to throw up for a good hour.

Then for the next 3-5 days sleep, take pills, drink stuff/apple sauce. No straws though you can burst the stitches. If you stay thorough on the antibiotic regimen you should come out with few complications. I got unlucky and they bottom set didn't heal properly so they had to make another incision to give me more antibiotics. Doing this honesty sucked hardcore so do everything you're told to the line.

Everything about signing a contract knowing the complications is true. Hitting a nerve, top set being close to nasal cavaties so just make sure they guy is good.

In all down time is probably around 2 weeks tops. No sc for a good week though : T

I have a cautious skepticism myself, I am absolutely certain there are situations where removal is necessary but I feel they fail to tell many people just allowing them to grow in and treating them like any other teeth wouldn't lead to problems. (I'll assume they have that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" logic)

As far as fucking up your other teeth I'm sure it depends on how bad they are out of alignment. I've had braces and now sport nice straight teeth that I don't want to fuck up. Dentist told me to get my wisdom teeth removed 6 years ago (one is impacted), I never did, they grew in, my teeth are the same. Keep in mind I have never felt discomfort from my wisdom teeth, I am no dentist and everyone's genetics and jaw bones are different so do your research and weigh what's at risk. If you feel intense pain then by all means get them removed, it might lead to more serious problems later, especially when the roots continue growing and essentially merge with your jaw bone. Wisdom teeth extraction is a pretty minimal surgery with no real detriments even if you don't need it. (Which I'd be pretty convinced this is the main reason they suggest it for almost everyone)

I still have all 4 of mine, with no real intention of removing them at this point. If they randomly started bothering me one day I would reassess my decision and seek removal, but for now they are just teeth, alas with a bit of evolutionary unnecessity.

I'm in the same situation, all four are there but they aren't causing any problems and there is no discomfort what so ever. I recently went to a new dentist and he looked concerned, I told him that it's not causing any discomfort and he nodded, but his advice was to get them removed asap. I have no intentions to just yet, they are very expensive to remove. I too had braces, but before had braces put in I had four teeth (two top, two botto) removed. Maybe that gave just enough space for my wisdom teeth to not impact my other teeth?

So you got both sets of your second molars removed? I would assume that would give you quite a bit of room, have they sprouted yet and do you know the angles? It would be very interesting to know if it was possible for them to be impacted. Did you look at the X-Rays?

I once assisted a dentist while he was doing a wisdom tooth extraction. I basically stood there and did the suction and gave him anything he needed during the procedure. It was so intense. The tooth was so deep in there, that the dentist had to literally cut the tooth and root into pieces and take it out in chunks. It is such an intense procedure that I'm not surprised the cost is so high. Not to mention you have to get stitches afterwards and everything, it's a somewhat time consuming process.

edit: Oh ya, I remember during the procedure, I got so nauseated at one point that I just put the suction down and got out of the room. I felt like I was going to throw up. It was stuffy in there and I had been standing there for over 40 minutes staring into this person's mouth sucking up all the blood and spit. It was intense.

Its kind of funny how many people actually get addicted to percs/vic after their wisdom teeth operation. I didn't feel any nausea, I was just the most relaxed and lovable me ever for a couple weeks after. LOL

You guys got cool drugs after you got them out? I was told, "Buy some ibuprofen, you'll be right". It was really quite painful for a few hours after the anesthetic wore off but it's now a pretty gentle throb. The main part that's affecting me is my jaw feels bruised to hell, and I frankly don't feel like doing anything that doesn't involve sitting.

I had the operation done around six months ago. It cost 2.4k, luckily my insurance covered 2k of it. I had all four removed with complete anesthesia(totally asleep).

From what I'm aware, the operation can be done with local anesthesia where your doc will make the jaw/face numb while remaining conscience to a certain extent. I think that would save you about 200-400 dollars if I recall correctly.

I watched your stream one time, cool stuff man. And gl with the teeth.

My dentist told me to get the only wisdom tooth that got through out. Its been there for 3 years or so and never bothered me, so i didnt think much of it. Behold, 2 months later about a 3rd of it broke off.

Turns out part of the tooth was exposed and died. So ill have to get it removed now anyway. Altough im not jumping to get it pulled 2 weeks from now, i do want to get rid of it. Broken molar just feels wrong and dangerous.

Yes there is a possibility you don't need all teeth taken out. I had 3 wisdom teeth (even the dentist laughed saying I was lucky I didn't have 4) but he only took 2 out, saying the other 1 would be fine. But I don't know with your situation if your dentist insists on taking all 4 out.

i loved the part where you wake up all high as shit. Like this chick:

Got mine removed 4 years ago, and a few days after I got TMJ ( http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001227.htm )

if anyone in here had TMJ, you know how hard it is to deal with, and extremely annoying Sometimes I couldn't even brush my teeth or eat before going to school, because my jaw was locked lol...i had TMJ for a year Q_Q

Now, for some reason, my teeth are all crooked :\

In Croatia, I haven't heard much talk about removing these teeth. Also haven't heard problems regarding them...

I wonder how serious is all this fuss and how much of it just to generate customers for the dentists? (in Croatia, insurance covers the dentist costs so you don't have to pay)

My dentist explained to me that you can't really remove the bottom wisdom teeth without removing the top also since otherwise the top will grow down into the gum (iirc). I don't need my wisdom teeth out... so it's not like EVERYONE is told to get them out :p

I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled out soon too! But my mom is being cheap and says she'd prefer to only pull the left side only or only bottom 2. Is that ever done or recommended? since I only hear everyone getting all 4 taken out

ROFL.

The dentist is only getting a small portion of the money he collects. Even a checkup isn't cheap without insurance because he needs to maintain the facility and equipment, pay tons of insurance, etc.

Obviously he is going to charge more for longer/tougher procedures. Also, dentists/surgeons aren't performing operations continuously while they are at work and it makes sense for them to get paid well for the time they are actively doing this... it is really intense. I wouldn't want someone removing my teeth who wasn't getting paid well to do a good job :3

I am one person who had them "magically" grow in and not interfere.
Though, growing up, I was told they would need to be removed. My 12-year molars came in at 8, and my wisdom teeth at 14. Way early. Maybe because I was still growing, my mouth adjusted for them.

when i got mine done they gassed me and i went off to some happy place listening to my iPod. When I woke up I was motherly escorted out by a loving nurse and driven home by my parents. Next thing I remember was being in bed chewing on gauss and bleeding like a mother. In that painful time the codeine was my friend, as will the codeine be your friend. the 3k you're about to pay is but a small price for happiness.

seriously though, 3k is pretty steep, sorry to hear. i only had to pay 5 hundred :o. i'm happy i live in canada.

its expensive but if you spent 5k on braces or whartever it is...you dont want to mess it up.
My teeth were literally growing at 90 degrees so it was messed up lol. i got 4 out at once. didnt 'really hurt for me but i just ate tylenol 3 the entire time. Its gross cleaning it and shit but after a few weeks you get used to it.
Also i puffed up like a chipmunk so it was kinda funny and i couldnt really eat for 2 weeks...at least i didnt want to cuz my mouth was sore. i can congee it up and drank those meal drinks.

I had all removed at the same time. Not sure how common it is but my wisdom teeth started to break down fast like I was doing pounds of meth in days or something. The got so bad just in a few weeks they had problems trying to pull them without them going into pieces in my mouth.
Point? Get it done.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. It was quite a bit cheaper because I told them not to knock me out and just use a needle injection to numb my mouth. So I just listended to my ipod while they yanked them out. I also didn't want to pay for the pain killers they tried to give me which saved me another 60~ bucks. The pain was only really bad for about one day then it got much better very quickly. I bled for about three days as well but thats pretty normal

Anyway, there are some ideas to cut down the cost, no extra meds, no being put under.

Or find a cheaper dentist.

I got mine removed, so expensive. It was quick and painless though, I could eat normally after 2 days played in my high school basketball game after 3. It all depends on the person for some people it goes bad and hurts like hell

Don't let the procedure scare you, I had mine removed when I was awake and it really doesn't hurt at all. Afterwords, be prepared though lol. Your mouth will be so incredibly sore.

3 of my wisdom tooth comes out perfectly fine (vertical), but my wisdom tooth on my bottom right jaw is fucked, 90 degrees/horizontal right into my other bottom jaw teeth, i was told by my dentist to get rid of it 3 years ago, but i didn't give a fuck and 3 years later my jaws and teeth are still fine as of today, tbh though from where i live not really that much people actually give a fuck about wisdom teeth, nor did they cause them any sort of dental/oral health issues...

Hm, make sure you actually need to get your wisdom teeth pulled out before you decide on the surgery. The initial pain of them growing always hurts, but it goes away. Make sure they're actually going to fuck up the rest of your teeth without the removal before you decide to get them pulled. Like micronesia said, not everyone needs to get their wisdom teeth pulled out. Mine hurt on and off for about a couple of weeks at a time, but they're now fine and not screwing up the rest of my teeth.

I got two of my bottom ones pulled out because they were impacting my other teeth and caused sharp pains whenever chewing food. You only need to pull them out if they are hurting you. Dentists want you to remove all four to make quick cash but honestly, you do not. Also, it is much cheaper if you have local anesthesia instead of being completely knocked out with laughing gas.
Is it in you?

As I said earlier my dentist told me if you only get the bottom ones out the top ones will inflame the bottom gums or something like that... so if you are having problems keep that in mind.

Def get it done kawaii, people don't know what they're talking about really. It probably won't even make your teeths get fucked up, what it really does is that you have chances of getting a cavity in between your impacted teeths and the area will be unreachable so you will fuck up your nerves and your teeths.

I got it done, all 4 at the same time, wasn't that bad tbh. It doesn't really hurt with pain killers but putting ice on every 20 mins is kind of annoying.

EDIT: oh btw I didn't bleed at all after surgery, so you might not bleed which is good.

I got all 4 wisdom teeth taken out last year, but not all at once. I got 2 on the right side of my mouth during summer, and 2 during winter break. It honestly didn't hurt because all of my wisdom teeth were visible and grew out all the way. The oral surgeon didn't have difficult time either since he just had to rearrange them and pull them out. The operation took about 20 minutes, but it felt like it went by way faster.

My oral surgeon gave me some pills to take before coming to the operation, which was to help calm me down during the operation. After that, I just went home, the medication started to kick in, and slept for about 2-3 hours. There is a lot of blood, but my surgeon gave me a bag full of items such as gauze, vicodin, etc. I guess I got off lucky compared to other stories my friends told me.

Worst 2 days of my life EVER.

Its so fucking bad when your bottom wisdom teeth are pulled out, constantly having to
have some cloth kinda thing in your mouth to soak the blood at start is so boring. Atleast
everything has been pulled out now, so I don't have to worry about it eeeeever again! :D
