That was the point Rep Barton was trying to make, that the fine has no basis in law and is little more than a shakedown on a rich company with a bad rep. BP are unpopular but in a free market economy the Gov can't just steal from companies it thinks can't defend themselves. It'll cost them more than 20,000,000,000 if they do it because of the distrust in the market the precedent will create. It's one thing for a Gov mandated authority acting within the law to fine companies for breaches of the law, it's quite another to retroactively extort money from rich companies just because you can. The law is the law, regardless of how unpopular the guy it defends is. That's pretty much the whole point of the legal system. BP was already offering settlements to people, but there were allegations that some people weren't getting what they deserved or being outright denied. I imagine these settlements probably included a waiver from any further legal compensation. If I understand correctly, the $20b is a fund that BP has agreed to be dispersed by a neutral body that will investigate claims. BP is protected from major lawsuits, and victims are ensured fairer compensation. This works out best for everyone, BP included. For BP, $20b is a drop in the... er... too soon? Of course $20b is not a limit, we'll have to see what the total damage estimates come to, and for how many years harmed businesses will be able to collect.

http://www.ifitwasmyhome.com/ Also: who the fuck put the oil to fire???? I want names and i want consequences! Lets have the pollution contained in one area. If we burn, there will be CO2 emisions and global warming will be a bigger threat, so please shut down the fire. I thought human mankind was more clever but putting the oil to fire is just plain stupid. Oil disaster = regional disaster Global warming = entire earth What a trade... lets seeee now will we have a piece of the earth polluted or do we want to pollute the entire earth ... hmm since my IQ is 5 i take the last option.
