10 things you should know about (V):

2. Foxes in Fiction - Swung From the Branches

Download it
Read something the artist wrote about it
Buy it on cassette (6 copies left I think)

Foxes in Fiction is a guy named Warren Hildebrand from Toronto, and this is his self-released debut album. The A-side (tracks 1-9) is warm ambient music, not what I'd normally listen to but very pleasant. If you like ambient stuff you might find it compelling.

Where Swung From the Branches really takes off though is its B-side, which could stand on its own as a decent bedroom pop album. I can't get over "15 Ativan" and "Memory Pools".

3. That Which Does Not Kill Me Makes Me Stranger

‘‘During race, I am going crazy, definitely,’’ he says, smiling in bemused despair. ‘‘I cannot explain why is that, but it is true.’’

The craziness is methodical, however, and Robic and his crew know its pattern by heart. Around Day 2 of a typical weeklong race, his speech goes staccato. By Day 3, he is belligerent and sometimes paranoid. His short-term memory vanishes, and he weeps uncontrollably. The last days are marked by hallucinations: bears, wolves and aliens prowl the roadside; asphalt cracks rearrange themselves into coded messages. Occasionally, Robic leaps from his bike to square off with shadowy figures that turn out to be mailboxes. In a 2004 race, he turned to see himself pursued by a howling band of black-bearded men on horseback.

‘‘Mujahedeen, shooting at me,’’ he explains. ‘‘So I ride faster.’’

This article is about Jure Robic, who is by far the world's best ultra-long-distance bicyclist (think biking across the US in 9 days, 2 hours of sleep each night). The article is a fascinating look into how our brains prevent us from realizing our full physical capabilities, and the power of mental toughness in competition.

4. The Baracuta jacket

Right now Baracuta is having a remarkable sale (over 50% off) on many varieties of its iconic jacket. Being June it's probably getting a bit too warm for a Baracuta, but if you pick one up now you'll appreciate it during next spring's chilly nights.

Boys wear hoodies, men wear jackets; the Baracuta is a fine example of why that doesn't have to mean "dressing up". And you simply can't go wrong wearing any of Steve McQueen's favorite duds.

Update: duckett points out that Baracuta is really sticking it to Americans by charging 30 GBP (30 fucking pounds yes) for shipping to the US. This I did not know! If you're not willing to pay that kind of premium for access to the original Baracuta, I recommend taking a look at this version by L.L. Bean Signature that's at a tasty sale price.

6. Google Chrome speed tests

Watch the making of (warning: sort of corny)

I finally made the switch from Safari to Chrome, and have been really impressed. Chrome is rough around the edges and doesn't support many of OS X's useful system-wide features, but it's damn speedy. Have any extensions to recommend?

7. Korallreven - The Truest Faith single

Download it
Order the 7''

Just a single, but both tracks are great. Korallreven is the latest in a line of fantastic balearic pop acts out of Sweden (see also jj, Air France), two guys one of whom is The Radio Dept's keyboardist. Save these tracks for cruising around with the windows down this summer, and keep a lookout for their full-length debut.

8. Photos of stuff found in a Mexican drug lord's house

get money

9. http://aloneinthecorner.com/

Alone in the Corner is a blog about the NBA written by a guy who bets on NBA games as his full-time job. I'm not a big basketball fan but I enjoyed reading some of his recent posts (they are poorly written but really content-rich).

Especially engrossing is his series analyzing the calls of Tim Donaghy, the official who was busted for betting on NBA games last year. Alone in the Corner does a great job of attacking Donaghy's claim that he never fixed games (see these three posts in particular).

10. MST3K on justin.tv

Mystery Science Theater 3000, 24/7/365. Boom shaka laka. (Looks like once every day an un-MST3Ked bad movie runs, so you and friends can add your own commentary.)

11. (World Cup bonus!) F "Write the Future", this is still the best soccer commercial around

yep totally unreal, and it's a pity that (either because they're dumb or because they don't want to show their money for fear of being busted) these drug lords don't do anything with their fortunes. I mean that stack of cash is enough to finance 50 productive new businesses (+ earn a return), and it was just sitting in a house slowly losing value. I guess there's an argument for legalization here that I hadn't thought about before...if most drug lords hoard like this one, the drug market is effectively just burying money in the ground.

wow 30 GBP for shipping WTF?? I didn't get that far in the checkout process that I saw this bomb. Are you sure you didn't have it set on expedited shipping or something? That's way outrageous, you're right. Thanks for letting me know, I will update OP.

There may be American vendors that sell Baracutas, google around? I know lots of decent clothing lines carry knockoffs, like the L.L. Bean Signature one here (which, on sale at $54, is a pretty sick deal). But there's something to be said for buying the original.

money collected from criminals by the police/government usually goes towards law enforcement budgets, at least here in the States. I've read stories about rural police departments that have relatively massive budgets because they've made big drug busts.

JWD you rock.

Could you give a little more insight in out_4_pizza? To me it looks like microscopic artwork looked thru an electron microscope :p I know, chemistry has ruined my life.

BTW I have a question. What do you use to listen to your Vinyls and Cassettes? I use stuff that came out when the things were still popular formats and hook them to modern sound systems but I've seen a couple of modern turntables ment for playback not DJ'ing but I can't remember any brands, maybe you can help me out.

I have an old cassette deck and receiver that I picked up for cheap on Craigslist (Harman Kardon), here is a picture. A few months ago I picked up a somewhat worse-for-wear Technics SL1200-MK2 on eBay and fixed it up with some new parts, it sounds fantastic. Based on my research, if you want hi-fi sound but don't want to break the bank, you are best off buying a used TT like the 1200-MK2. As for TTs that are being made today specifically for listening, I've heard great things about Rega but even their entry-level table is ~$400 I think (the P1). One thing to keep in mind is that you want to have a good balance in quality between your TT and your cartridge, a good cartridge can take a decent TT far, likewise a shitty cartridge on a great table and you're just wasting money spent on that TT.

Maybe I will include something about my audio setup next blog, but I'm not really an expert on this shit. The best piece of advice I have is to stay away from fancy headphone amps and just buy an old receiver on the cheap.

As always with this stuff, googling is your friend but beware beware beware the hi-fi snobs who seem to have $1000s to blow but not really know what they're talking about.

(well technically..yes)

edit: ops, did I misunderstand or you posted wrong video? (I thought that the video you posted is also called "write the future", but it's "take it to the next level")

Well my point was that "Write the Future" is this year's hyped World Cup commercial, but I like Take It to the Next Level much better. No mixup in posting videos.

you dont give much about privacy, dont you? crome may be fast but it has some ridicoulus TOS points why i avoid it like the victim the psychopath. but hey, nr1 is sexy. and nice song in that vid!

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, is all.

its not about being a conspiracy theorist. its about a term in the tos that practically says: everything you do with crome is intellectual property of google. and with everything i mean everything. thats not about conspiracies, its about privacy and and having the power to show companies like google that they CAN'T do what they want. especially since there are other browsers around that can take cromes job.
but yeah. thats kinda the facebook generation view of things. if you apply for a job and they look at facebook, seeing the dude who is applying drunk to coma, i bet it gives one better prospects of being taken over. but hey, thats just me.
