So,

I switched over to Windows 7 on my desktop a while back, and recently (a month or so? maybe longer?) I've been getting a few problems that's been getting on my nerves.

Basically, applications will often "Freeze", and then either take about 20 minutes before it responds again. Okay, applications freezing is fine, but when it freezes, nothing else "happens" (ie, I press ctrl + alt + delete, and it responds when the application unfreezes). Sometimes it doesn't unfreeze and it just dies.

The mouse still moves, although clicks don't seem to be registered. If I have foobar on while doing so, the music continues to play, if I have a video or a webstream on, it continues to play (although I can't do anything with it, like move it, and such, and the second I do that, the application freezes too!)

This often happened when I watched korean tv shows online, but now it's just happening when i'm browsing, when I "resize" windows, or when I click on a menu on X-Chat or anything like that. I'm honestly considering downgrading to XP or maybe trying a clean install of windows 7 and see if that helps because i can't honestly figure out what the problem is =(

but honestly having computer freeze and losing hours of your work = X___X

But before I resort to any drastic measures, I want to get help! Can anyone help me?

Oh right. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Here's a Hijack this log if it helps?

Haha, Googling is the first thing I did.

It doesn't seem like a corrupted system file (cause it doesn't "just" freeze, it only freeze after I trigger something), and I have no idea how to check if it's a RAM Power issue (but it ran fine when I was using Windows XP so I presume that is not it?)

Also from what I can tell from the problems of the other people, their entire machine just seems to freeze, my machine sorta... works before it goes down and sometimes even revives if I give it enough time!

Which is why I asked here!

Alright, I was a dick to you and you still came out smiling.

I've had good luck in the past with TuneUp Utilities, though if worse comes to worse go here buy this, back all your shit up onto it, take a deep breath and reinstall windows. Ultimately, searching in vain for days for a fix or *wince* taking your computer into the shop, will cause you a lot more time and aggravation than formating and reinstalling.

It might be a RAM issue. Couldn't hurt to run Memtest86 for a few hours and report back if there are any errors.

Why not? Thats like saying don't install windows updates. If you're going to use Windows, use the best version. XP is well supported due to age, but its not necessarily the best.

I use Windows 7 and haven't had any version/support related issues. (Doesn't mean they don't exist)

what the hell do you use? vista?
7 > xp in every possible way. especially if you need a 64 bit processor.

edit: to OP, next time it happens try pulling up task manager (control+shift+esc) and seeing if a random process is giving you trouble. it might be anything from simple malware to hardcore hard drive damage. your description isn't enough for someone to go "oh i know the problem" and diagnose. if you can't seem to pull it up during your freezes then try reproducing the effect with task manager already up and pushed to the side.

edit2: also make sure your hardware can actually handle ultimate x64? you did do this... right?

edit3: flamewheel spams.

Is it just with web browsing? First try a different browser and/or updating Flash.

Will do so. Running it now, I'll probably leave it running for a while and see what happens.

It's not a specific process -- but mostly with browsers. However, it happened on random odd processes too (ie: opening a menu from XChat or other programs)

Yeah, my hardware should be able to handle it without any issues.

Firefox and Chrome both give me this problem. I haven't had the guts to try it with internet explorer yet.

I have also updated Flash.

Have you looked through your system and application error logs?
Sorry I don't have a win7 computer in front of me to detail how you get in event viewer and filter for errors, it is slightly different from xp.

It's supposed to be automatic but actually you have to press this button.

Oh right, I have done that. There are a lot of errors -- i'll get the exact ones once I'm done running this memtest for a while.

One more thing I'm going to add is that chkdisk has had to run extremely often nowadays, often finding files to recover and such. Hopefully that'll narrow down the problem more?

Try right clicking on the flash video and disabling hardware acceleration under settings. I was having similar problems with flash video freezing under certain conditions on x64 Vista and that fixed it. Something to do with an incompatibility with the latest flash updates and Nvidia drivers.

This was an issue for me when I tried to do full screen mode, but it sounds like Milkis has bigger problems.

I'd do all the standard disk error checking scans and stuff too.

Are you using a laptop? I had this problem on my laptop after installing Windows 7 (but it didn't occur when it was running Vista, nor did it occur in my Ubuntu install). I thought the hard drive might be dying, but testing for that turned up nothing wrong. I also thought it might be a ram issue, but that was also fine. Looking around a bit more, I found some reports that it could be some sort of power management issue, but after trying to tweak my power settings, it still occurred. One day about a month ago though, I switched my power profile from 'Balanced' to 'High Performance', and found that it never happened while on that setting.

If you're using a laptop, definitely give that a try (you can swap that setting by right-clicking on the battery icon in the system tray, I believe). I still need to try and tweak the balanced settings to figure out what exactly is causing the freezes, but for now I just let my laptop run on High Performance all the time.

this happens to me occasionally when my storage hdd spools up after hibernating. like tec said it might just be your power management settings specifically hdd settings.

I have a lot of errors like

The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because the shadow copy storage could not grow due to a user imposed limit.

The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period. (This seems to be a problem, so I'm currently applying this solution)

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume Windoze. (Happened once or twice, but this may be because I had to force shut down my computer while it was frozen)

Hopefully fixing the issue related to that device timing out will solve it. We'll see :D
