Going to Kyoto this weekend

Hi, I need some advice about things to buy when I am visiting. I am going to visit Japan for the first time this Sunday for about 5 days to go to a conference at Kyoto University. I have roughly 1 day combined free while in Kyoto and one night in Osaka.
I am sure I will see a lot, but I am worried I will waste the opportunity to buy some nice/unique things because I don't have a ton of time to explore and don't speak Japanese. T_T

So, please give me shopping advice. ^_^ Advice on things to do is also welcome! I will update this with pictures assuming anyone wants any afterward. :o

What kind of stuff are you looking to buy? For regular shopping i guess you should go to Namba which is in the centre of Osaka. There's also a big department store in Osaka called Hanshin.

For electronics and otaku goods (if you're into that) you should go to Nipponbashi, it's walking distance from Namba.

Buy a mini temple ^^

Or a nice big, full-colour poster from Gin Kakugin/ Kin-Kakugin (Gold and Silver Pavalions, great, beautiful sanctuaries)

when in osaka get some takoyaki (baked octopus) so yummy

don't forget to get souvenirs for your friends, like cell phone charms or something

Not really sure what I want to buy (but I know there must be a lot that is worth getting w/ this opportunity)! That is why I need advice :p I will try to check that out.
