Hi tomorrow I am going to a job interview to a newly opened restaurant. I'm just a college student looking for a part time job right now and I applied to be a waiter. What do they usually ask in interviews? I've never been interviewed so I am not sure what to expect. Also about what to wear - is wearing jeans usually ok? Or is that a big no?

Help me please!!!

Well, if you're applying for a waiter, the main question would be "Do you have arms/hands?". Since you typed up that message, I think your chances are pretty high.

Do NOT wear jeans to your interview. If it's a more casual work environment you may get away with just a nice pair of slacks and a polo shirt, otherwise a shirt and tie is a must.

They'll ask you questions about your resume, maybe why you want to work for them or how long you plan to be with them. Just keep eye contact and answer confidently. Interviews are cake.

Nice clothes, confidence, don't be arrogant, and if they say they will call you back, call them yourself a day or two later. It shows that you desire to work.

and you better have a question to ask, even if you already know the answer.

for greatest flaw, everybody says the same thing, but that is okay "I tend to over analyze things".

I'm just guessing with the "if a customer is upset" question, but when i was interviewed for teaching swim lessons they asked something along those lines, and in school they went over similar questions with consultant work.

I would say jeans would be okay for an interview to be a waiter, but I would wear a nice dress shirt with it.

Do your research on the company first. If this is a proper job, not like 'wendys( i think?!) or mcdonalds etc, it's probably not that important but any proper eat-in resturant with expensive meals and well dressed people etc usually like employees to have a bit of knowledge of the company before-hand. This might just be a British thing though, not sure.

Don't look down at the ground if the interviewer is writing something down after they ask a question, I did that in an interview and the person thought I was texting in my interview lol.

convince them you will work your ass off while maintaining a solid face for their establishment. they don't want drama. if they ask you "would you rather work in the front or the back?" say something like "i'd rather work in the front", but let them know that you would work hard anywhere.

shit like that, interviews for restaurant are easy.

A nice shirt (not t-shirt) and a pair of slacks will do fine. If you wear jeans, make sure they don't have any holes in them, and the thread at the end near ur feet are not coming undone.

Yeah they'll just ask about previous experience and what you would do in certain situations.

Khaki's and a polo should be fine. Call them a couple days after if they haven't called you. Suit/black pants/tie are all pretty overkill for a waiter if its a run-of-the-mill restaraunt.

Be sure to emphatically deny any accusations that you want to be waiter just so you can steal from the restaurant. In fact, I good opening statement would be something to the effect of "Hi, I'm _____ and I do not want to steal from this establishment". 2 cents

They ask you the most horrible questions you can imagine.

Why do you want to work for us?
What can you bring to this role?
Tell us about yourself.
What relevant experience do you have?

If you don't have a shit hot answer for all these questions and more be prepared to improvise/look around shiftily while stuttering.

I always find they ask nice, normal, easy questions then just throw a total stinker in there. Maybe that's just my personal experience but I find it really hard to answer why I want to work for them other than uhh I want a job....

Most interviews have questions that mean nothing. They are most likely trying to see what kind of person you are. So as a waiter, you need to have certain qualities, like being sincere, ability to speak clearly/confidently, and not being obnoxiously ditzy. Answer the questions with these and mind and you should be set.

If it's just a waiter job, they'll ask some of the questions like...

"Describe how you would handle (or how have you handled) issues with unhappy customers or associates?"
"What does customer service mean?"

Also if they ask anything about some sort of problem/crisis, the answer is ALWAYS "I'd let my supervisor/manager know and follow his/her instructions/warnings". Find out a guy is shooting heroin in the bathroom? Find a fellow worker stealing money from the register? Have a customer who's extremely unruly and is harassing other workers/customers? Tell them that you'd let your supervisor/manager know.

Usually, if you're just applying for a waiter job, all they want is someone who can follow instructions and act nice. Even if you'd know how to properly handle any of the above situations, they'd rather you trust the person who was specifically hired to handle those kinds of things.

Although this doesn't apply for things like "what would you do if the customer's unsatisfied with their food" or something relatively minor like that.
