So I lived in a student house with 5 other housemates for 4 months for my work term. 2 of them were female Irish exchange students (going to McMaster), and when they left, they gave their hamsters to me as a "gift".

At first I was quite reluctant, as I'd have to clean the cage, feed them, etc etc. but the more I took care of them, the cuter and furrier they became so I have kept them as pets for a few weeks.

However, tonight I heard the hamster stirring around in the cage followed by a high-pitched squeal, and when I looked into it my Russian hamster had dug its teeth into the side of my Serbian hamster's neck.

I took the dead hamster out of the cage, and disposed of it down the garbage chute. When I came back, the Russian killer struck again killing the 5-week old young females leaving it all by itself.

Then I read up that hamsters are very territorial, and will kill each other over territory control. They also eat their babies if you disturb the nest during weening, and they eat their own shit several times over in order to properly absorb the nutrients they need.

Their teeth is 1/4 of their body length, did not feel good going through my thumb.

God, what fucking miniature devils.

My friend had a pair of hamsters once. One of them ate the back of the other's skull out as it just sat there. It was absolutely gruesome. Needless to say, he got rid of both of them promptly.

I grew up in an apartment complex that did not allow any non-caged animals. I always had hamsters. I probably owned over 20 during my childhood.

Memories:

I had two hamsters that lived in a massive cage playhouse thing (one with all of the loops, wheels, toys, etc.). I went to check on them when I woke up one morning, and one had eaten the other one to death. He ate the majority of his back, so his spine was exposed. Needless to say, hamster #2 was dead. I kept the first hamster for quite some time, and had no problems.

Another one of my hamsters had cancer of some sort. He ended up with a growth on his side that ended up bulging to be as large as the hamster itself. We had it put to sleep.

I bought another hamster, this one from a pet store (usually, we just had them given to us or some such). We brought him home in a plastic box thing, which the pet store put small animals in for transportation. I could see him inside, and he seemed really docile. We get home, I open the box, and the moment I pop the end off, he screeches and attaches himself to my finger. I flail my arm around like an idiot, looking like something out of a shitty anime, all while freaking the fuck out. Now, I was something like 12 years old at the time, so it was not like I was a toddler, or the age you would expect to have such a reaction. I am swinging my arms around, screaming, and he will not let go of my finger. Finally, I go put my hand back over the table to try to pry him off, and right before I get my arm over the ledge, he lets go and falls to the ground. He just sits there, giving me the most hard ass hamster stare of all time. He didn't move, just stared at me, like he was daring me to fucking stomp him. I didn't. I put him in a cage, and he lived for a long time, never biting me again. The end.

my hamster (several years back when i was a kid) squirmed a lot but i didn't know what was wrong, until the day it died. we were about to bury it when worms started coming out of its ass, like wtf?

later on, we realised it was because my mom placed it near the potted plants and somehow the worms from the plants got to it.

poor thing.

but boy did it fucking smell

Why the hell would you want a cow a monkey and a carnivorous fish?

I never had a hamster, and I'm very happy that I never did. I had 2 turtles though, and now a dog.

I know a young girl with hamster enamoured,
It rolled round her home in a transparent ball,
It roamed the house, access uncensored,
'til late one 'eve, it crawled 'twixt the walls

It's shuffling gait she'd hear when off went the lighting,
As round her house he'd make his grim way,
'til months had gone by since his last sighting,
Then came the reek, and a sense of dismay

Yet ne'er did he crunch though a cage-mate's skull,
Nor eat his own young, territorially,
Instead he'd just sit, with eyes fixed and dull,
Just chewed his own dung, conspiratorially

Yet I think I'll never own a hamster,
Having exhumed one from wall plaster...
The greatest burden a man must bear is choosing being understood over metrical footing :(

Hamster are fucking shit animals.....there is no such thing as a non-asshole non-biting hamster.

Fuck them

Get a cat or a dog.

I once owned a cat. Wait, no, my bad... I was once owned by a cat. And I can tell you there is no such thing as a "pet" cat... YOU are the pet.

Yeah when they're very young you can do it, but once they're older than like 6 weeks or something you have to split them up.

Does that mean,

Pet Store Employee: (picks up the hamster) oh you naughty boy, you did not act cute enough for anybody to buy you within 6 weeks of your birth. You know what that means~ <3 It's time for such unprofitable hamster for you to retire before you start doing further damage.... PERMANENTLY! (evil laugh).

Hamsters are devilish critters. I'd never want to own one. Rats, on the other hand, are unbelievably cute and cuddly and would never bite each other. Everyone should have pet rats.

Gerbils and rats are much better than hamsters. Gerbils especially, because they are small (like hamsters), are really fun and cuddly and are a lot more social, meaning that they will become friends with other gerbils that you put in the cage.

Yeap, the vocalist of Dead Kennedys is right, not keeping more than one in a cage at once.

Ferret/polecat > all

My friend had one for a pet called Fudgie.. it was really cool and affectionate... would come to greet you.. would play fight and gently bite your finger.. would lick your finger sometimes..
the best thing was that it used to crawl down my sleeve and sleep in the elbow of my mouse arm and I would game for hours rocking it to sleep arm got tired after a while though lol but yeah it was cute/awesome pet.
