You are clearly not an established SCBW player, you need to realise that a lot of the people you are playing against have essentially been playing this game for years..
Not only that, you are just at the beginning of your journey! I mean 70 apm is just so bad it's not even worth insulting you over.. you are clearly new to SC and should definitely not consider giving up!
I don't even have SC2 but if I can just say this : the reason you build "pylon at 8" is because you want to be producing workers constantly, and this is the first opportunity you have to make your pylon whilst keeping constant production... everything pretty much follows this same design... The next part of your build is your first production facility at the earliest point possible whilst constantly producing workers... rather than learning a build 8 pylon etc you should think of it more like this... the "build order" is a result of playing in a certain way.

Btw, you can't make good maps if you don't have a good understanding of the game.

Thing is, I LIKE watching progamers and playing the game. I've been watching since at least 2008. It's only with the sc2 beta that I started playing though.
By maps, I'm not really interested in melee maps - I mean use map settings.
And I know that much! I understand the need to produce workers etc. It's just that at 16/18 population point, I don't know how to proceed well. I just proceed with going adding more gateways and pylons, cy core when I have a chance, get 3 zealots, get warp gate research, get robo and get warp prism etc..

ok so these are the tips i give my friends who are about your level
megaupload says the replays are unavailable.
but make probes all game try to keep your chronoboost energy at 0 at all times hotkey hotkey hotkey hotkey both nexuses and all production facilities this will make your life 100x easier
copy some build orders from livestream players (there seem to be lots of P's?)

i'm a silver terran and i suck too, but i generally have better macro than my opponents so when their cheese fails i can win.
unless you're facing good players you can win by scouting well and having more units than them.

Yep, I do that. I try to make probes all came, and keep chronoboost at 0 - at least until the battles come. I hotkey both nexuses, but not gateways as "w" sets them as the default hotkey when I later get warp gates...
And re-uploaded the replays on rapidshare.

If you aren't doing this already, you can try blocking off your ramp or choke point with your buildings. Either leaving no access to your base or just a little opening that could easily be blocked off with a force field or a zealot. If you are getting taken out by quick rushes this could help. It will at least prevent them from running into your base and killing your probes.
I'm not in the beta yet, but I've seen people doing this and it looks helpful.

70 apm in sc2 isn't so bad... you can get into plat no problem like this if you are actually playing well with that apm.

your 70 apm at the start owns my 0-20 apm in the beginning
but i'm in platinum

apm doesnt mean anything in sc2

So it's the strategy that I'm not getting. at ~16 probe count, I usually build 1 or 2 zealots and proceed to tech to warp gates. Is this not the right way to do? How can I improve my performance?

1) APM is calculated differently 2) Level of play is lower in the life of sc2 than in sc1 so you don't need apm to keep up as much 3) Some mechanics in sc2 require nearly as much effort as in sc1 but don't require as many button presses such as certain elements of macro.

1) Learn BOs. Check out SC2 forum. 2) 70apm is almost enough for perfect macro. Master that first. This is important as shown by the scientifically proven list below:
Abilities in order of importance: 1) Have more shit than your opponent. 2) Make the right kind of shit. 3) Invest in shit that gives more shit at the right time 4)???
5) Yo micro I nearly didn't see you.

They use a different gamespeed for apm calculations than bw did I believe... meaning 100 in sc2 is the equivalent in 140 in sc1 or something along those lines

As I understand it, sc2 doesn't count a lot of the redundant actions which are made. It seems closer to EAPM than APM, though it probably isn't as strict.
