The next thing I am going to do is check all the cooling fans are running smoothly and clean dust out, I\'m thinking something might be overheating. I need to find a good tool to monitor system temperature. How hot is too hot for various components by the way?

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions as to what I should do to improve the stability of my system I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance

I followed the advice in that thread. Updating my bios seemed to do the trick in that my PC did not blue screen for a lot longer than usual, but it just did it again.

The stop error this time was: 1000008e C0000005 8E08E23E 9F1274C8 00000000

previously this was all that had appeared I think, but this time there was an aditional line: rtkvhda.sus-address 8e08e23e base at 8de0e000, datestamp 4b824cff

Does anyone know what this means? thanks a lot

These messages are basically the same, its only the 10000008e part that really matters, that identifies the type of the error, the rest are just memory addresses.

But this new line might be helpful, google tells me rtkvhda.sus is a Realtek audio driver file, so the problem might very well be in connection with that.

Reinstall your audio driver, if you didnt already.

(0x8e and 10000008e errors denotate kernel level errors, and as such, driver malfunctions usually, as it was suggested in the previous thread already.)
Or if its not an integrated card (though I'd guess it is), try removing it, and see if the problem persists. But first just reinstall the audio driver (preferably to the latest version you find), that might very well solve it.

rtkvhda sounds like it could be audio driver related... scratching my head otherwise though. overheating is a pretty common cause of random errors, and a faulty power supply could do it too. your bios should have a section called "PC Health" or similar that shows you the current temperatures and voltages.

Temperatures all look OK, and the crashes do not seem to come at any particular temperature level. I recently replaced my PSU to fix other problems, which was successful, so I doubt it is that.

My onboard soundcard however has been causing me grief for ages, it keeps mistakenly thinking I am unplugging and plugging in audio devices and this problem persists even when I reinstall the drivers.

So it seems pretty likely that the soundcard is the problem, I am going to un-install the drivers and disable the device and see if the problem manifests itself again.

Thanks for the responses guys, looks like we might be getting somewhere.
