Sprained ankle and Walking boots

This is my first blog and unfortunately it's a sad one (for me at least).

Last Friday, I was playing football(soccer) with university varsity team players. Tackles were thrown left and right and at one point I got tackle from behind and my ankle 'tweaked' a little. Thank god it wasn't so bad so I decided to continue playing for another 15 minutes before leaving.

Let me explain how we play, basically there is a bunch of teams and only 1 field. Those that win stay on, and those that lose come off. Long story short, the team who scores 2 goals first stays or wins after 10 minutes stays.So, you want to always give it your all to stay on and since in my case I was about to leave soon, I especially didn't want to lose so I always played hard.

Now we were facing a tough team and there we were winning 1-0 and there was maybe 30 seconds left and I see this guy about to take a shot at an open net, so I LUNGE in to STOP IT! The ball hits my foot, I stop the ball, my ankle gives and I land on it with all the force of my lunge in it.

Sure they didn't score and we won, but my ankle didn't make it... I have a third degree sprain and my ankle looks like it has elephantiasis.

I might update this with a picture later, but right now I'm too pissed about the whole "can't walk right for 4-5 weeks"

Anyways, the doctor said I need a walking boot, so I got one for 150$ (Canadian albeit). All I have to say it's really expensive, but it truly helps.

So did any of you get a walking boot before? or sprained ankle? How did you guys go about the whole "I can't walk faster than .5km/hour thing? Any general advice beside the "don't put weight on it"?

Put lots of ice on it. Rest it, elevate it, don't put any weight on it. If you have any crutches, you could walk on them for 1-1.5 weeks, but its your call.

I'd also recommend going to a physio because besides the exercises they'll give you to do, you'll also be given some massages on the ankle to make sure no scar tissue forms. I had a bad sprain a couple of years back and right now one of my ankles has a slightly more limited range of motion, which can contribute to even more (minor) re-sprains of the same ankle. This is probably due to the damage suffered by the ligament, but also due to scar tissue.

After you've recovered, work out the muscles around the ankle and do more balancing exercises (even after you are done with physio). You don't have to be in the weight room, it could be outside running (I've been told that running barefoot on grass will strengthen muscles around the ankle).

And next time you make a lunge/tackle, make sure to go in lower, and also be 100% sure, so that you're landing on the side of your ass and sliding rather than taking the whole impact on your foot.

Ouch thats rough.
At least you won though!

I have personally never used a walking boot and even sprained an ankle for that matter so I too would be curious as to what others say to do in this situation.

Ya I have crutches too .... it's just the freaking walking boot looks like a space boot lol and cost a lot

ya, I was late coming on the challenge because somebody let the guy go (retard), so when I made the stop I had my leg fully extended all the way to the toes and that's probably why I basically destroyed the ankle

oh and thanks eben... in a couple of weeks i'll tell you how it feels

ah that sucks!

When I was a kid (5th grade) I broke my arm really badly. I used to sneak through a neighbors yard to go fishing in the woods behind my friends house. we would climb a 6 foot fence to get there, my sneaker got stuck one time (shoelace snagged on something) and when I went to jump down I ended up falling headfirst over the other side, I've fallen off fences before all the time but this time there was a brick under some leaves... it was not pretty. my Dad told me my arm looked like an S... I was screaming and in too much pain to really remember myself... It was a horrible break, both bones in my right forearm were broken. the X-rays are somewhere... its too gruesome though.
