Note: contains bleach spoilers. Also don't spoil One Piece Piece past episode 50 of the anime as that is where I am.
I got into One Piece after getting bored of waiting for Bleach manga to come out every week: swear to god Kubo takes his time moving through the story over there, even though it's great (could be better though).
Anyway, One Piece was horrible for the first 15-20 anime episodes. Childish, boring, never any real threat of Luffy losing any battle, retarded bad guys that looked like they came out of a Dr Seuss book than the memories of a combat haunted soldier, etc. However, once they got into this fishmen battle and Nami's backstory, shit got real and I started to understand why people like OP so much. The battles were much more believable than in Bleach, much more fluid.
That said I still prefer Bleach, especially for the Soul Society arc. I LOVE the Bleach world, despite the writing being dubious, especially with Aizen just god-mode trolling everyone. Bad guys are inexplicably weak in Bleach, good guys don't even max out before getting put down, no good guys ever die, etc.
Bleach world still rocks though, blows away One Piece world, whatever the actual plot and "realism" elements are missing. Hating on Bleach is definitely overrated and popular, as is hating on anything that does well and is enjoyed by the masses in any sphere, from music to movies to books to mangas. Looking forward to the rest of One Piece, then I may move on to Naruto or some other recommended anime.
Plz don't spoil OP in the comments btw.

Soon enough, the only "Bleach" you will know is that stuff you use with laundry.
OP rocks your world even harder as the series progresses.

I hope so! It's been steadily getting better and better. First 20 episodes were god-awful and I wanted to just drop it there, but the good reviews kept me going.
Luffy and crew just got famous, with a 30 million berry reward put on their names, so they've become pirates and the story has apparently finally progressed from the introduction / crew-gathering episodes to real adventure episodes.
|
I wanted to watch this but couldnt get over the art being...not to my taste >_<
|
For those who couldn't get past the first few episodes : just try to get over it, after ep 25 it will rock i swear.
|
lol OP battle seems more realistic than Bleach....? the main guy stretches his body like rubber...-_-; wtf
|
haha, i just started one peice too, I'm on ep 65 i think. I like one peice for the fact that it hasnt gotten boring yet and there are very few fillers so far. The char developement is good and the characters abilities arent over complicated.
In my opinion its pretty good at best, i dont find it amazing though. It seems the writer uses the same formula for the story and it becomes almost predictable. Like Oh where are they going to sail next? To some island where they meet some nice people and end up having to fight against some strong dude with a bunch of henchemen and the strong dude likely has a devil fruit ability or some supernatural strength and after the fight the nice people are extremely greatful and everybody is friends. Luffy has to say hes going to be pirate king atleast once in all fights and he always finishes the fights.
Personally if i were you I'd watch naruto over one piece, not saying one piece is bad, just naruto is better.
|
I tried reading One Piece awhile back. Takes way too goddamn long with the huge chapters + the amount of chapters in general, and the art wasn't really to my taste either. Is the anime a suitable substitute?
|
One piece just gets progressively good to a point where it breaks the limits of awesomeness and even after it keeps getting better each episode. It's just insane how good one piece is compared to bleach, naruto or any shonen manga.
|
unfortunately, one piece has a horrible anime.
the manga is ten fold better

Started watching one piece a few weeks ago...
Up to episode 346 :p
Yeah it's good although after a couple of hundred episodes the pace really starts to slow at some points as things get dragged on... and I counted the ep recap gets as far as 5 minutes into the episode before the story begins sometimes...
|

People get stabbed repeatedly, hands shoved through their chest cavities and out the other way, etc, and survive in Bleach. Good guys only though.
When Arlong was crushed by the house and Usopp beat that fishmen outside the town I was convinced that neither was dead, both would get up and somehow be 10x more powerful. That's the Bleach formula anyway.
|
On a Bleach note, apparently the last 2 years worth of manga releases have covered less than an hour or two of real Bleach-world time.
|
For those who are reluctant to try One Piece...
Think of it as meeting a girl in middle school who is very ugly, but has a good personality. Nurture that relationship, and as she develops into a beauty and turns that good personality into an amazing personality, you will reap the benefits in college.
One Piece starts a bit slow, but at least it never slows down like Naruto / Bleach does after every battle.

ever since bleach started with the filler episodes of the zanpakto i stopped watching after like 2 episodes and tried OP to fill in my 30 minutes of anime and it was during the impel down arc and ya... boring as hell, some gay ballerina guy and i decided to re watch death note....
god damn fillers...so bullshit not even...bah....

Bleach fillers are god-awful. One of the good things about starting an anime late is that you can just skip the fillers.

Anyone else pissed off by how the gum-lines are constantly shown on characters in One Piece?

Ah sweet, Zoro gets stronger? I thought he might be like Chad or that Quincy guy in Bleach, just kinda get left behind and replaced by stronger characters.
edit: 1500 post and goliath
Also, lol, for those who follow Bleach, I bet Aizen has predicted everything that has happened in One Piece... "just as I planned"
Jesus there are some plot holes in Bleach

There are no "THE" protagonist in One piece. Sure Luffy is one but if had to express in %'s then : Luffy:~30-40% Other crew members: the rest
Bleach: Ichigo:80% Hitsugaya:19% Rest: 1%
|
One Piece is like x10 better than Naruto + Bleach combined .. as many stated the first 20 episodes of the anime are horrible in animation and the style is kinda wierd but you get used to it after some time and you will learn to love it. The story gets from better to awesome with time trust me !
As for fillers there are basicly no fillers in One Piece maybe like 10-20 ep out of 450 ep which is nothing . Try comparing that with Bleach and Naruto which are 50% fillers or you can put Bleach at 100% horribad fillers in this last year lol...

Haha Hitsugaya, that guy gets too much scream time. Apparently the girls in Japan love him and Kubo caters to them. Glad to see him go down, though he'll definitely recover as nobody good ever, ever, dies in Bleach. Ever.
|
Hoping Luffy gets a power-up soon, he's had the same skills since Episode 1 as he has now at Episode 50. Rubberman getting boring. He spams his Gum Gum Pistol almost as much as Ichigo spams Getsuga Tenshou.
edit: Actually he showed some new skills again Arlong when he couldn't bit through his elbow, it flexed and got pumped up or something temporarily.

I'll pm you the vid that got me into OP instantly, hope it helps you too

Cool vid, cant wait to see some new stuff from Luffy/Zoro/Sanji and most of all Usopp. They still have the same powers as they had at the start where I am.

Relevant question: Anyone have a site where I can download dubbed One Piece anime episodes? I'm watching them streamed and its low quality.

So true, One Piece starts out relatively worse than Naruto or Bleach, but then gets relatively better than its two counterparts as you progress in the manga.

visually i put naruto far above OP and bleach storywise its definitely better than bleach, not considering manga here( i simply dont want to spoil myself so i didnt read any) In naruto characters actually die and naruto himself is definitely not the most likable one( kind of silly and straight-forward) I dont know why people always complain about naruto, most of them still watch it religiously. Seems like the Bandwagon Effect did some damage here. Naruto has best battles as well, bleach was on par with it in the beginning, now its nowhere close. Also the drama levels seem deeper in naruto just my opinion, dont hate

Id have to agree. Ive been up to date on One Piece since episode 20 and its at 443 right now. I quit Bleach around episode 50 something because i basically got tired of how annoying the characters were. Ichigo would be like super badass in the shinigami world (sorry i dont remember what they call it since i stopped watching it aggggeeesss ago) and then weak as shit in human world. Not to mention the endless shit fillers.
Every character in One Piece gets stronger with Luffy and Zoro obviously the strongest. Even Nami and Usopp has become quite strong not to mention theres about 4 more characters to be introduced that you havent seen yet.
Im personally syked out everytime a new episode comes out for One Piece -_-. Not to mention the episodes when a new a wanted poster is created increasing the amount $$ on their heads

Naruto is like weakest character in the anime, and hes the main character. That alone is painful to watch. Also Naruto feels like DBZ for me. Way to many unnecesarry flashbacks. Awesome action scenes like + Show Spoiler + come once about every couple dozen episodes.
Its better then Bleach but not One Piece =\

Seeing as you only watched like 1% of the whole series you should actually watch some more THEN judge the series again As for the art style, seriously man. After 50 something chapters you'll realize how much better this fits the series more than anything PS: ONE PIECE HAS NO PLOT HOLES So if someone were to start one piece, would you recommend the manga over the anime?
|
One Piece manga is infinitely better than the anime.
|
Manga vs Anime: OP Anime drags a bit to avoid fillers. Bleach Anime gives up with 50% of season some filler arcs. Naruto Anime is just filler.
|
One Piece anime is just fine. IMO the Manga moves almost too fast, so the pacing in the anime helps out alot.
But yeah, One Piece gets better and better as it goes along. Stick with it, because I can guarantee once you get like 250 more episodes into the series, you will join us in saying that One Piece>>>Naruto and Bleach.
And for the people who didn't watch One Piece because of its art style... I was like you before I watched One Piece. Then Harem made me give it a chance, and now it is easily one of my favorite anime/manga. You get used to, and eventually start to enjoy the art as the series goes on.
|
Actually ive seen all episodes of Naruto and didnt care enuf to follow the manga since im not a big manga fan. Only manga ive finished reading is Berserk, and thats still ongoing. And yes i did try reading the manga for Naruto but i got bored fairly quick and stopped. As for Bleach i agree, i should prolly watch more of it before talkin bout it, now thats theres like 10000 episodes. I did try jumping like 60 episodes at one point to get back into it, just to find the fight scenes were just as weak as they were 100 in the early episodes.
All i know was that my personal feelings told me that Bleach anime should've stopped after Ichigo saved Ruchia or w/e. As it didnt, i personally felt the series was dragging and going downhill so i stopped.
I apologize if my personal opinions offended you.
|
Yes the manga is awesome but i would recommend watching the anime because it follows the manga 100% and its always better to watch the anime . You cant really enjoy the fights as much in the manga compared with the anime. I started reading the manga when i caught up with the anime .
As for Bleach i droped it because the fillers got so anoying and now im sticking with the manga but Bleach is full with more plot hole than swiss cheese.... im not really enjoying it but you can read Bleach manga for like 1 min the chapters are like so short and bad so 1 min per week is ok i guess .
And Naruto I almost droped it because again.. FILLERS but the last filler was somehow well squeezed which kinda had something with the main story and im watching it because+ Show Spoiler + Incoming battle of Pain vs Naruto and just this whole Pain arc is good i guess but after this i will probably drop Naruto too because the manga started going downhill from there so will stick with manga like Bleach .
|
Yeah, One Piece is so far ahead when compared to Bleach or Naruto. The first few tomes of Naruto were good, next ones okay, and with the apparition of Tsunade, it becomes worse and worse, in storyline and visually (both anime and manga are actually pretty ugly).
Bleach is just like... Well, the fusion between Dragon Ball Z for the humongous number of power-ups, and Saint Seiya because those damn girls are always taken prisonners. Both of them have qualities, Bleach just takes the worst parts of each of them.
In fact, I just don't like most of those shonen, and One Piece is a goddamn exception to this rule. Good plot, great characters (crew of straw hat, marines, pirates, ennemies), creative fights. The only weak point of One Piece, it's the story really begins when they reach Grand Line.
10 volumes of introduction, quite long but rewarding.
|
My list: One Piece > Claymore > Naruto > Bleach (Sometimes Bleach > Naruto -_-)
I remember when I first read One Piece, it was just so... childish and slow but after a while I realized that all that stuff from earlier on was to build strong bonds between the reader and the characters o_o Whenever I recommend to One Piece to someone, I have to tell them that it gets soooo better after 100-150 chapters or so.
One Piece universe = amazing Characters, not just the main ones, have substances <3 Mr Bon Clay
btw, how's Fairy Tale? read around 30-40 chapters and grew tired... any good later on?
|
In no other manga or anime, other than One Piece, could a character like Bon Clay be considered a good character. It is a testament to how good the show is.
|
i started watching One Piece yesterday, not exactly what i expected after all the praise, but i will have faith and keep watching it, shouldnt be too hard of a task after >90 eps of kenshin

One piece is amazing, and I highly recommend it over Naruto and Bleach. Sure the art might turn some of us off at first, but get through the first few chapters, and you'll love it. Those of us who really love OP know it's about the great characters, amazing story telling and endless amounts of epic moments. I think Oda's style of drawing, though not as sexy or flashy as some, truly brings out the emotions and feelings he wants us to feel at times.

LOL You actually watched all of Kenshin? You do realize the last 30 episodes were completely filler and non canon, and were complete garbage and really horrible . The final arc made me puke . Go read the manga instead which actually finishes the material, also have a look at the 3 Kenshin OVAs which are actually fantastic. Trust and Betrayal is one of the best animated movies ever made.
As for OP(as in topic creator). Keep up with one piece it gets a lot better as you go on, and I heard a lot of good stuff about it in comparison with the other two in the big 3. The shounens people should have another look at are Hajime no Ippo and Jojo's Bizzare Adventure(especially part 3 which is really fantastic and creative/original), which have been going on since the 1980s and still going pretty strong.
|
Yeh Hajime no Ippo is the fuckin shit. Im kinda pissed at how they didnt continue with New Challenger!
As for Heens question on Fairy Tail, although the animation is similar to One Piece, its not like One Piece. I am however enjoying the series alot so i recommend watching it. I hear the manga is pretty sick for it but im not a manga fan/reader so i cant really comment on it other then what other people have already said.
|
Fairy Tail is like an inferior version of One Piece with magic instead of pirates. It's not bad, but it's not that great either in my opinion. (Manga only).
And I honestly didn't find the early chapters/episodes of One Piece all that bad. It really does pick up at the Arlong arc though. Arlong arc was amazing.

yea, ive seen the ovas, 2 of the 3 were good
it took me 2 eps of One Piece to get hooked, im not very picky i guess

Seriously ? No. The world of Naruto was really interesting, the uses of ninjas in actual world. I found that concept totally genious. The fact that ninjas work not for personnal matters, but for the survey of their villages, the duality between their work and their personnal feeling, the special abilities, that was cool.
With Tsunade, ninjas disappear and are replaced by fucking wizards. The power of each and every one of those wizards can crush an entire country of normal people. The bad guys have no more motivation than "I will conquer the world/I want to be immortal/I'm emo". The battles are like a World of Warcraft demonstration of spamming the same buttons again and again.
One Piece doesn't forget his main line. It's all about exploration, discovery, in a world of pirates. And the one piece obviously. Bad guys are usually not just a bunch of crap who wants to conquer the world. Usually, because + Show Spoiler +Ener was a perfect exception to this rule.
Other reasons are in my other post.

One Piece seems exactly the same, even the catchphrase( I will be the pirate king)
im around 45 eps, it still is horrible drawing( and you said naruto has is worse), same "wizards" killing fleets of 50 ships( hawk eyes). Unlike naruto it has few of those super annoying characters( like usopp and buggy( who was revived rofl)) that make you wonder what is the average age of the viewer they target. Usopp alone is a good enough reason to stop watching one piece. Like i said, i dont ask for much, i got hooked really fast. But so far it didnt stand up to naruto( to be fair the way the story goes i still believe it might) Another annoying thing is not killing your opponents, they all alive so far besides mermen. At least kenshin managed not to mention them after the battle ended.
you speak very confident, but to me youre wrong in half the things you say. Saying "seriously? no" is meaningless because its just your personal opinion and you are the only one taking it seriously

Usopp alone is a good enough reason to stop watching one piece. One of the greatest things about One Piece is the characters and the depth given to them. Usopp might seem stupid and annoying at first, but you get to see him evolve into one of the best characters of the manga. Also like a lot of mangas the art evolves as the series progresses. Like Shaman King, the art's pretty shitty at first, but gets better and better as it progresses
