Two weeks in today! Hope you guys are still finding the music interesting and enjoyable. Also, I have another mad props e-cookie question for you: Which Cake song is used as the theme song for a currently running TV-show? Enjoy!
Disclaimer: The title says that it is Daigomi's guide to good listening. That means its my opinion. Feel free to disagree as long as you provide reasons; I enjoy a good discussion as much as the next person. Also, I just like listening to music, I don't give a shit for the political implications of any music.

They always take the weird obscure bands to do soudntracks, it's almost like street cred.

1. Tosca Tango Orchestra - Waking Life Soundtrack - Unfortunately I absolutely hate Waking Life. The music itself is pretty good and definitely interesting but bleh ... I really can't stand the movie (the whole rotoscope is cool for the first 15 min then gets old fast). I know it got good reviews but I agree with J. Hoberman of The Village Voice who felt that it "doesn't leave you in a dream ... so much as it traps you in an endless bull session". This is one movie where my expectations were so far removed from how I felt after seeing it. Anyway, I think if you separate the music from the movie I can appreciate the music.
2. Hypocrisy - Abducted - Good stuff (I find the less singing/growling/screaming the more I like this genre because I can appreciate the mastery of the instruments).
3. Nas - Stillmatic - God I love Nas. All aspects of his music are just so enjoyable (voice, delivery, lyrics, beats, hook, etc).
4. Cake - Fashion Nugget - A bit eclectic sounding ... enjoyable if you're in a random sounds mood. It's also kinda spoken-wordish. (for some reason I thought they were a British band but apparently they are American)
5. The Gaslamp Killer - My Troubled Mind EP - Ok ... not particularly impressive imo though. I'm not familiar with the distinction between all the electronic, break beat, trip-hop, IDM, etc genres/subgenres but I do know I enjoy The Crystal Method more than other similar musicians.

1. The soundtrack really is good. To be honest, I watched the movie when it came out, and I only remember the music at this stage. I do remember actually enjoying the visuals, but I can't remember anything else.
2. It's quite easy to understand metal elitism really. It's an acquired taste (which automatically brings elitism with it), it's music that's generally not made for profit, and the focus is very much on instrumental mastery. I am glad I started truly "listening" to music with metal, it teaches you a lot about music. If only there was a way to make metal mainstream without making it shit.
3. Nas is awesome. It's strange though, my tastes seem to be a touch off with that of the hip hop populace. I prefer Stillmatic over illmatic slightly, but with Jay-Z I prefer reasonable doubt over Blueprint. In the end I love all the albums, but I lean towards the wrong side each time :p
4. I really like Cake, especially Fashion Nugget. Haha, that album has some great songs on it.
5. It's a bit of a problem for me to choose songs sometimes, cause the songs, especially in post-rock and electronic, are so part of the album as a whole that they sound a bit empty out of context. That Gaslamp Killer EP has bagpipes in it, it has jazz in it, 60s pop music, and not in a Girl Talk way, in a well-blended album kind of way. It even has a balkan sound to it at times. It really is a good EP that people should listen to from start to finish!

That band is one of the few that I physically own multiple albums of - I think all I need is the b-sides and I'll have the complete discography. Someone already answered but CAKE is in Chuck, and CAKE's Italian Leather Sofa used to be used as the intro for the show Mission Hill. I used to play Short Skirt, Long Jacket, Arco Arena, and The Distance during sound checks when i played bass for my bands and no one would ever get em . Daigomi blogs are <333, especially when CAKE is included. Haha, awesome! Arco arena is one of the coolest songs ever, as is Comfort Eagle right after it. The distance too obviously, that song's lyrics make me smile every time! Really fun band, awesome for driving with.

Gaslamp killer is really amazing, but I don't think this ep of his showcases it. I see him preform a lot since I go to a lot of shows in LA and regularly attend low end theory, a weekly show at which he is a resident. He as really come a long way in the past couple years, I first saw him djing at a crappy little art gallery opening and his set was by far the best art in the building. He recently toured with Prefuse 73, his opening set was over 2 hours and was absolutely incredible. He has a great stage presence and can really mix up some varied and interesting music. I highly recommend you track down his "Hell And The Lake Of Fire Are Waiting For YOU" mix cd for a more complete example of what he is capable of.
