So I am sitting here at the library right in front of the student tech support/fix-your-computer kiosk and I overhear the guy charging $35 for a diagnostic, removal and repair. Then he proceeds to go on about how a corrupted system file will involve a complete re-format and re-install for another $35. And they'll even put a FREE anti-virus on it, AVGFree.
Then another girl comes in hauling her desktop saying how her roommate might have completely fucked her entire dorm's computer system (4 total). Except it just BSODs on start up.
Now I understand that sometimes it's just not worth playing Sherlock Holmes with what's wrong with your computer. But to drop 70 bucks (maybe more) without trying anything or asking anyone is pretty dumb. Especially because the guy won't spend too much time on it (which makes sense for him) and you'll probably end up spending more time later to get everything back to where you want them to be.
I wanted to turn around and just say let me look at it first, especially if you just backed everything up.

$70 is actually pretty cheap for stuff like that.
People are stupid. Computers confuse people. People pay good money to have them fixed so they can play Farmville on Facebook.
This is why going into a computer field = massive win.
|
Man that sucks. At my school I think they'll help you out with stuff for free. But probably not problems that are as bad as you describe I guess.
|
yeah that is actually cheap Geek Squad is a ripoff, Do not go there.
|
yeah that's not too bad where's that geek squad ad to plug in your ps3 for you for "only" 150? bux or something?
|
my friend repairs computer and yea...people get charged pretty good money to get their comp fixed however...only hard part about getting your computer fixed is finding out what the problems is
1 software - it can be fixed by reloading ur os (free money for company). 2 hardware - ur screwed w/o insurance to cover for it. if you have insurance you are most likely to get a free computer of equal or better value (free computer parts for the employees).

Almost every type of service like plumbing, gardening, bike repairs, etc. seem to have extortionist prices to anyone with a bit of knowledge. But you're mostly paying for labour/time anyway so it seems fair.
|
Except there isn't significant labor/time, I mean if the job required labor, special knowledge/technique, or time, then sure the cost is justified.
But the guy literally spends about an hour on the problem, run some diagnostic that comes with the computer or operating system and then defaults to the format method. It's the equivalent of Google-ing the problem and then saying fuck it...for 70 bucks or whatever's the going price.
|
If whoever is spending the money doesn't want to google it themselves then that is what they are paying for. Some people are plain lazy and others are just intimidated by technology for whatever reason, especially women.
One time a while back my dad had a guy come over to try and fix one of our computers and he did (no joke) the exact same things I had done by spending 30 minutes on google researching. Then he told me the hard drive had gone bad which is what I had concluded as well.
|
Why the fuck do you think I tried so hard to work at geek squad back in hs man. That shit was a fucking robbery. Oh you have adware? $50 for looking at it. House call? $35 for just driving out there.
