Without giving any spoilers and not to make it seem like I'm bragging, this game is awesome except for the only reason they CLAIM its going to take 50-60 hours is because theres a shitton of walking. When I finally got to a more 'open' part of the game not Cutscene A to Cutscene B it was incredibly time-consuming not to mention its hard to gauge if you're ready for the next boss until you get raped by it.
Then again my Japanese is really fucking terrible, I basically can only understand them doing cutscenes and can't read kanji for shit. Which is pretty much making is basically making this review already less credible, if it was barely credibly to being with.. but I digress the game is fun, the battle system though back to its standard stand in a line and trade hits system is active (probably the wrong word) that it isn't extremely boring. There was ONE boss where I just was pressing X X X for 16minutes straight, but there's always that "what the fuck is the point of this guy" boss in each game.
Summons are cool, and getting them is a bitch if you're bad like me. This was supposed to be a quick review but I haven't made a blog in awhile so I'm sure everyone was oh so worried about me. Just FYI to all my fans out there I've been playing this and Tekken 6.
I'll probably be posting more soon since I'm about to beat the game..I think....theres 13 chapters and I'm somewhere in the middle of chapter 11? I can't tell if I'm in the middle the first 5 chapters were like 10 minutes each, and then they suddenly started taking days. Its going to suck when I get the airship (still haven't gotten it yet D: oh my god indirect spoilers) because there's going to be a shitton of things I cant read. Not to mention item customization oh my fucking jibblets doing that, and still continuing to aside from the "THIS NUMBER IS BIGGER LETS USE IT" policy I haven't made much progress.
I recommend FFXIII just because its so pretty, and aside from incredibly long linear bullshit everything else is well done. EVERYTHING. As for the US release, I don't want that version because people speaking English about friendship and all that drama stuff I can't take seriously. If its in Japanese I'm okay with it, because I'm weird like that. Some of this stuff is going to be freakity weird in English, especially Hope, apparently hes being played by some kid who VA's for Disney. I like that Japan for all the little boys its just women, not actual LITTLE BOYS doing the voices. Oh yeah the baby Chocobo makes this game 10x awesomer too.
Summary Buy FFXII if you can withstand cheesy drama, in exchange for a well done battle system and actually interesting story. They partially dodged the fail-bomb which is sappy love stories and focused more on government drama stuff like FFXII which is nice. The game is pretty amd shiny, I say buy it, because people listen to what I say.

I wouldn't call love stories a fail-bomb considering those have been very popular among fans.
And any FF is kind of dull when you can't understand what the characters are saying.
Anyways, thanks for the non-spoiler impression, although I don't see how this game could turn out bad given Square's track record.

I'd actually be okay with the cheesy english drama if it weren't for this little minor detail...
LEONA. FUCKING. LEWIS

Oh, I have nothing against Leona Lewis, don't get me wrong. I'm just pissed because I was hoping for a miracle and they would let Sugawara Sayuri keep her single for the US version.

I understand what theyre saying, whats boring is INBETWEEN it takes sometimes FOREVERRR its like ugghhh its a seemingly tiny airship but its got corridors that are like mordor or some random nerdy reference.

You mean that fan service.

I think you mean XIII at the end...
Is all the text in Japanese or English? If its in English i may consider buying the Japanese version.
|
its all in Japanese, read the post! D: The opening movie has text in english which confused me greatly.

Don't pretty much all final fantasy games have cheesy drama? Not that cheesy isn't good.
|
is there any coorelation to FFVII? i heard rumors that like Cloud was in it, and then theres the whole Midgar thing, so hmm.

I just got my copy yesterday, got up to somewhere in chapter 6 or 7. Baby chocobo is freaking awesome. Hope annoys the hell out of me, that little brat, and he seems to be the best enhancer around, please let the afro guy step it up.
How did you actually make it through all these battles with bad Japanese? Personally, if my Japanese wasn't at least semi-decent (or be well versed in the lingo/have English translated walkthroughs), I think I would've had a much harder time. And...that's on top of me having a relatively hard time as it is. Odin was such a paaaaaaain...
Actually, how did you get the summon battles done? It would be really annoying not being able to know what to do if you can't read the Libra'd texts.
EDIT - Also, best voice acting goes to Lightning, but I love Maaya's voice.

Libra'd? wtf lol, I can read katakana/hiragana and an elementary level of kanji so I can catch the details at least. For the most part my japanese is barely enough that I can catch the gist of whats going on so I'm okay. Also my policy was to make sure everyones Crystarium is maxed out before I try to proceed to far through the chapter.
|
So you actually go out of your way to respawn the enemies for grinding? I pretty much avoided respawning and grinding, though I did have to abuse a smoke for a boss and look up some ideas on what to do for Odin...that fight sucked so much.
I need a better way to abbreviate "explanation you get pressing R1 after using Libra", Libra'd it is!
And I suppose if you know what to do for each summon, your Japanese can't be that horrid. :D

For those who actually understand Japanese, who's the story and character development? Personally, the only thing bumming me about this game are the character bios, which seems very underwhelming. But the few trailers I've seen look awesome though.

I'll probably post something more detailed when I get farther along, so far, I like this less than I did 12 (for the modern FFs, I hold 7, 10 and 12 to be high up on the list and 8 & 9 low, 4 and 6 are both excellent too) but more than I did 9. The story itself probably won't be anything to write home about, and it features some of the most annoying characters I've seen in FFs with what seems thus far completely vanilla development. However, the storytelling is quite novel for a FF. That doesn't completely make up these two aspects, but certainly makes it something that you can tolerate and maybe even enjoy.
