So now that the first quarter of college at UCSD is over...all I can say is that I am so disappointed with myself. I guess I'm just writing this to rant because I feel pretty bad right now. I guess the thing is is that I just wasn't used to how test heavy classes were in college. In high school, I would always get B's on tests and get full credit on hw and projects and do well in the class. But now that there's basically no hw and projects..I've gotten straight b's my first quarter..
Chem 6a- B japanese- B+ calculus for science/eng- B- writing- B-
2.9 gpa...I guess its just so frustrating knowing that I could do better so next quarter...no dicking around. I really want to go to dental school so I'm aiming for at least a 3.5+. Any words of advice from those who have been through college? I don't really know why I blogged this..just had to get it off my chest. sorry

why were you having trouble with tests

Don't procrastinate and study often. Make sure that you figure out what exactly your professor wants from you and how you should do assignments (especially writting) and how they will give out their tests.
It gets easier once you get farther into your education.

What's B-/B/B+ when graded against 100?
According to wiki:
Grade Percentage GPA value A 90-100 3.5-4.0 B 80-89 2.5-3.49 C 70-79 1.5-2.49 D 60-69 1.0-1.49 F 0 - 59 0.0
Is that how it works? 80's in university if not exactly bad. I had A+ (high 90s) in high school, now I'm sitting at B+ (high 80s) cumulative...

What kind of a gay system is where they give you less GPA points for a B-, I mean what the fuck. A B is a B, 3.0 , A is 4.0, etc.
If I was graded the way Cambium described, I'd have a sub 2.0 average lol.

A= 4.0 A- = 3.7 B+ = 3.3 B = 3.0
at most U.S. colleges, I believe

Our grading is like A = 4.0 (95+) A- = 3.7 (90-94) B+ = 3.3 (87-89) B = 3.0 (84-86) B- = 2.7 (80-83)
and so on...

The passing grade for organic chemistry in our school is a 45% and by passing I mean a C / 2.0.

That's not too bad, I got straight B's my first quarter too haha. Just know how to study and you'll get it

wait what? so every school has a different grading scale? how does this work when you apply for grad school?
edit:
and how do you get assigned your grades (in terms of A B C D E)? are your tests graded by letters as well, and then they do an average of the letters? or is everything graded in percentages, then they convert this percentage to a letter grade (if this is the case, isn't it better to just give out the percentage?)

i feel the op, felt the same way when i got to college...but i dropped a class (to a normal courseload), started making things easier for myself and working with people more to study/do psets, and picked it up by the end of the semester (today!)

Everything is done in percentages and they also give a letter grade on transcripts where I went. The school I went to had completely different ranges for grades then those posted in this thread.
edit: The grades Grobyc posted are very similar to what my school used.

That looks really really weird. It seems like that would make getting straight A's (no matter what type A-, A, A+) really easy.

No, it just means they mark a lot harder. Where I went it was almost impossible to get an A+, which was 90%. Average grades in classes were 65-73%(C+/B-).

I got a 2.8 my first quarter of college (B-, B-, B), and ended with a 3.77 and top of my major. Don't give up, you'll get into the swing of things if you are dedicated and work at it, especially when you start your major classes and (probably) start to care more and enjoy your coursework.

My advisor in grad school doesn't assign a - or + just letter grades.
